Subject: Motor Question
anjell53
Send Email Send Email

The Sparrow motor is rated at 150V. I have used 14 batteries at one point -
168V. I know the Kilovac controller can go somewhat higher - maybe 180V? My
question is... what allows an ADC motor to go over it's voltage rating. And
just how high can it go? Or this really all about RPMs?

Thanks for your insight.

What you are forgetting is that the motor is NOT connected directly to
the battery pack: there is a motor controller in between.

The motor controller _lowers_ the voltage and _raises_ the current, by
an amount set by the present conditions. The motor controller works like
a step-down transformer, except that it works at DC instead of AC.

> what allows an ADC motor to go over [its] voltage rating.

It never does.

> And just how high can it go?

Like the man said: 150 V.

> Or this really all about RPMs?

Yes, RPM does have a role to play in this equation.

Roughly speaking, the voltage across a DC motor is directly proportional
to its RPM. (More precisely, it is somewhat higher than that, in order
to generate torque.)

The motor controller takes the full pack voltage (156 V nominal) and
drops it down to the voltage that the motor needs at that RPM. So, when
you're stopped, the motor voltage will be just a few volts, even though
the pack voltage is about 156 V. When you're going at highway speed, the
motor voltage may by 50 V or so, even though, again, the pack voltage
is about 156 V.

Conversely, the motor controller raises the motor current compared to
the battery pack current. So, when you're stopped but starting to move,
the motor current may be 400 A, even though the pack current may be only
about 50 A. The torque of a DC motor is proportional to its current.

The only time that the motor voltage is the same as the pack voltage
(and the current is the same in the motor as in the pack) may be when
you're "flooring it", and the battery is nearly empty: then the motor
controller gives the motor all the pack can give. That's pretty rare.

Hello,
I think there is no need for sales negotiations to be shared with the
entire Sparrow community. If your message is intended for just one
person, I suggest you email that person privately, instead of going

To reply to an individual, privately, do a "Reply all", which will

My experience:
On my Kermit-#052 I used the full kit a & 2 extra remotes and the data logger.
Unfortunately, I was never able to get good data while driving due to EMF
corrupting the data stream. Worked fine sitting still (charging). I have the
Kilovac controller and tried upgraded to a new IGBT board from Black Sheep. It
didn't help nor did all the ferrites I put all over the cables. Ken Hall was
great at helping and eventually taking it back for a refund. There are
discussions on other EV sites on this same issue.

Anyone have any experience fixing the exterior door handle. Mine stopped
working today. I have to admit I had just finished washing the car and I closed
a towel in the door frame. Went to open the door and nothing happened. I
didn't hear any breaking sound and the handle moves normally, it just doesn't
engage the door mechanism. The interior door handle still works. Using the key
to lock and unlock the door doesn't change the lack of functionality.

I looked inside and it would appear to me this little metal bar that is glued to
the door handle mechanism runs thru some kind of hanger, but may have broken
loose on the end closest to the back edge of the door. The break point is back
far enough under the fiberglass that it is too far to work on with the fabric
covered panel removed. It would appear there is a second fiberglass interior
panel that could come off too. Are there any tricks to taking that second panel
out or should I be looking elsewhere to get the repair done?

I guess I will answer my own question. I was able to get the interior
fiberglass panel off enough to look at the place where the round bar goes. It
became apparent that the bar had overtime slid out of its hole despite the glue
that was used to hold it in place. I used some needle nose pliers and pulled
the bar back into the hole and the door handle started working properly again.
I then went back using J.B. Weld and glued the bar in place. Hopefully that
will keep it there for some time to come.

As I was traveling home last night on Hwy 10 at 55 mph, a deer ran right out in
front of me. I slammed on the brakes and veered to the left and struck it in
the hind quarter with the nose of my bird. I pulled off the side of the road to
see what kind of shape the deer was in when i saw the deer limp back into the
road where it was hit from another car. The car suffered more damage than my
bird did. I have a 4 inch area where the impact bent the fiberglass and did
some paint damage. Other than that there was lot of hair all over the hood.
The other car lost a headlight, maybe some front quarter damage, not sure b/c it
was dark.

Here's the funny thing...I had installed those deer whistles on my hood just a
couple weeks ago. I even made sure there were at the right angle too.

Anyone else hit a deer?

J1772 EVSE ("Charging Station") is about to become reality.

If you have the 220vac Zivan, you're in luck as adapters are beginning to show
up (e.g., http://modularevpower.com/) which contain the appropriate circuitry to
enable the J1772 EVSE.

Sadly, both of my Sparrows use 110vac Zivans, whereas J1772 only puts out 220vac
with no Neutral and thus I can't use one leg to obtain the lower voltage.

I haven't pulled the lid on the Zivan: does anyone know if the 110v Zivan can be
easily converted to 220vac?

Would like to avoid lugging around a step-down transformer or splurging for
another charger.

The Zivan charger pulls in such huge current spikes* that some charging
stations shut down. So, even with such an adapter, you may not be able
to use the 220 V Zivan charger.

(* 50 A spikes at 120 Hz; because it is not PFC - Power Factor Corrected)

Hmm, the hatch was destroyed, and you will need a little bit of body
work done on the hatch opening.
That's not TOO bad.
If you can get the price for a new hatch and associated hardware
(including hinge!) from Myers, it's likely that all the work can be done
by some local shop that does fiberglass repairs - often a boat repair place.
It will need at least SOME paint work, quite possibly full repainting if
they can't match the color exactly.

Hello Joanne,

I would try boat shops (you've got plenty in your area): many boats are
made of fiberglass, and boat shops know how to repair them or where to
take them for repair.

Auto body repair shops would be the second best bet.

I recently got hit from behind at a traffic light by a semi who "jumped" the
light. I went to about three autobodies and finaly got an estimate from two
of them. Call around and ask if they do fiberglass. They varied greatly, but
the cheaper one had done fiberglass a lot. He was $2500 so I got the check
and will fix myself as I teach composites at A&P school and for Experimental
Aircraft Assoc.

Hey guys,

I haven't heard anyone talk about AAA covering the Sparrow. Since I've been
having my bird painted and fixed up, it's had a non-op title with no insurance.
Now that it's ready to drive again, I can't find anyone who will insure it, and
the company who originally did said they won't now. So I called AAA who insures
my Audi and spoke with an agent who said she'd have to do some research. A
couple days later she said called me and said they'd cover it! Figured it'd be
nice to let everyone know AAA was another option for insuring Sparrows, but
they're only downside: lots of $$$.

I am posting this because I know that some Sparrow owners use Manzanita Micro
products or may be looking at a BMS system.

Manzanita Micro is having a half day sale tomorrow (12/30) morning. A flyer for
the sale can be found at http://evfinder.com/classifieds.htm

I am not getting paid for this advert, neither do I have any association with
Manzanita Micro, I just though it would be an opportunity for someone to save
some money on their products if they were already looking to buy.

My steering wheel started stiffening up some, so I took the car to a local
shop and asked them to grease it. They took one look at it and told me that
the reason that old grease was gone was that the rubber boots that seal up
the steering rack were shredded.

They managed to source new ones, but they are stumped about how to put them
in, saying that you can get access to the inner end of the tie rods. They
called me on the phone and asked it was all right to take the batteries out
to get access and I promised them that was a bad idea.

Does anybody have experience with this? Can you get access to the steering
rack if you pull the steering column?

Thanks,

Jake Oshins
