Discover historic roads and highways across the South and West and beyond.
Highways, by nature, transport us through both time and space. Some show us unparalleled natural beauty, others captivate us with eye-catching roadside architecture and highway design, while others pass through blighted landscapes of broken dreams. But each invites us to pause and ponder the past and present in new ways.
Tell us about your journey on the mighty US 80, the lesser known US 50 and US 60, the Old Spanish, Yellowstone and Ozark trails, the venerable Route 66, even that nameless highway meandering across the High Lonesome, or whatever road you choose.
Tell us not only about the best neon and vintage gas stations, but also the old bridges, remnants of original paving, roadside camps, courthouses, grain elevators, WPA-built parks, fraternal halls, greasy spoons, ethnic communities, those fields of swaying sugar cane, even that radio station that still plays 1950's Honky Tonk, and of course, the people.
The reality: this site is not a chatty discussion group. (You won't find roadie love here!) Instead, it is has evolved into an eclectic reader on old historic highways, with a special focus on preservation and the Southwest -- and of course, the Old Spanish Trail. Join us if you like to read, but please, do write! And Yes, we do post full articles here.
