Job and Career Tips

A Few Words Can Make A Big Difference!

Lets face it, writing a resume is hard work! Often times it is difficult just to get started, especially since there are dozens of acceptable resume formats available. Here is a quick tip to get you started that will work with most formats.

Begin each of your statements with an action verb. (e.g. developed, created, and initiated). The utilization of action words helps portray an aggressive individual with a history of achievement. Also, remember to use past tense verbs when describing a currently held position. It will give your resume a consistent format.

Less Is Always More!

The objective of a resume is to convey your previous work experience and accomplishments to a potential employer. Unfortunately, many job seekers make the mistake of including personal information on their resume such as; age, race, religion, marital status, health, and physical appearance. In most instances, it is illegal for an employer to ask questions related to these topics. Therefore, include only relevant professional details on your resume and leave the biographical information for the “Personal Ads”.

Keep It Short and Sweet!

Have you ever held multiple jobs for short periods of time? Don’t let all these positions clutter your resume! Several short-lived jobs can present a negative image to an employer. Try condensing the information by using one heading (for example, “Jobs Concurrently Held”) to group all concurrently held positions. This simple trick allows you to provide all the necessary information in a polished format.

Knowledge is Power!

There is no replacement for being prepared for an interview. If you have an interview, it is critical to research the company. Your company knowledge will not only impress the recruiter, it will also help you decide if this is an organization worth working for. It’s true what they say … knowledge is power.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Most jobseekers are not in the habit of polishing their interviewing skills on a frequent basis. As a result, it does not take long for one’s interviewing skills to become rusty. So before your first interview, take the time to brush up your old skills by creating a mock interview. Have a friend ask you some of the more common interviewing questions such as; “Why are you looking for a new job?” or “What are your weaknesses?” You will be amazed at how quickly and thoughtfully you will answer the questions during the actual interview.

Take the Time To Do It Right the First Time!

If you are like most job seekers, you probably spend countless hours attempting to create the perfect cover letter and resume. Don’t let your hard work go to waste by forgetting to complete an important step. Sign your cover letter!

Need More Information, Just Ask!

Today’s “hot” industry buzzwords are constantly changing to match the rapidly growing employment arena. In addition, each profession has its own set of unique industry buzzwords. So that brings us back to our original question, “How do you find key buzzwords?”

First, stay current in your jobs skills and industry knowledge by participating in professional organizations and reading trade publications. Second, frequently browse on-line postings or traditional want ads. Soon you will begin to recognize key words that are mentioned over and over again. These are the words to incorporate into your resume to catch the eye of the recruiter.

For example, “project management” is a frequently used buzzword today. Although you may not hold the title of “project manager”, you may have gained the necessary skills in past positions. Therefore, why not use the buzzword “project management” in your resume? Here’s a possible description, “Developed project management skills by coordinating all aspects of weekly team meetings including recording minutes, electing officers, and planning quarterly team outings.”

You should now have a better idea how to find and use key buzzwords in your resume. Be careful not to embellish your skills simply to use a buzzword. Everything stated on your resume should always be true and accurate.

You Never Get a Second Chance to Make a Good First Impression!

In most instances, the first interaction with a potential employer is when they call to schedule an interview. Jobs seekers often overlook the negative impact a voicemail message can have on a recruiter’s overall impression. While it may be fun to have a voicemail message with a funny joke or trendy playing music, most recruiters don’t find it professional. Therefore, during the period in which you are actively seeking employment, record a voicemail message that is short, to the point and professional.

A Little Knowledge Goes a Long Way!

When completing an employment application, never write "See Resume" on the application. Your resume is not a legal document. However, in many instances the employment application is. Therefore, many employers will require you to complete the employment application even though they have already received your resume.

Demonstrate your intelligence by reading each question on the application carefully and providing complete and thoughtful information!

A Few Small Words Can Make A Big Difference!

When creating your resume, use key industry buzz words in your text. Most companies now use specialized software to sort through the volumes of resumes they receive. In many instances, the software will only select resumes containing the specified key buzz words.

Stay ahead in the job race by creating a cleverly crafted resume!

Take A Test Drive!

Before accepting a position with an organization, ask if you can shadow someone who is already employed in a similar role. It will allow you to experience firsthand if this is the right opportunity for you. Be cautious of an employer who will not honor your request.

Don't Overlook the Obvious!

Nothing frustrates a recruiter more than interviewing an unprepared candidate. When applying for a job, be sure to always have a pen with you. Asking to borrow a pen does not leave a good first impression!

You Can Never Listen Too Carefully!

Most people get very nervous when it comes time to interviewing. It is critical to remain focused and listen to the questions being asked. Recruiters are looking for sharp candidates who can answer a direct question the first time it is asked.

Silence Is Sometimes The Best Policy!

When starting a new job, don't emphasize the way things were done at your old employer unless you are asked. Employers like you to know how and why current procedures are in place before you start making suggestions for improvements.

Don't Forget To Look At The Big Picture!

When comparing job offers, take the time to carefully evaluate each company's benefit package in detail. Today, more and more companies are placing an increased emphasis on employee benefits. The difference in benefit packages could effect your total compensation dramatically.

Success Is Only A Phone Call Away!

These days recruiters want to correspond with job seekers via email. It saves time for the recruiter and demonstrates your technical skills all in one shot! Therefore, it is critical you always have access to your email - even when you are not near a computer. Stay ahead of the pack by being accessible!

A Little Bit Goes A Long Way!

Don't be heavy handed with your perfume or cologne. Most interviews take place in small rooms, magnifying the smell of your fragrance. You should leave the recruiter with a lasting impression of your skills and abilities, not your grooming habits.

Honesty Is Always The Best Policy!

Your job search will require you to fill out an application for employment. This is a legal document so take the time to fill it out completely and accurately. Many employers will conduct a background check based on the information from your application. Any discrepancy, even the slightest difference, could disqualify you from being offered the position.

It Never Hurts To Ask!

Always ask for a business card at the end of an interview. It helps ensure your Thank You letter will contain a correctly spelled name and proper job title. Plus, it gives you all the necessary information for future correspondence.

Three Strikes and You're Out!

Don't miss out on the job of your dreams by playing phone tag with a recruiter. Most recruiters will only call three times before moving on to another candidate. Act fast and give them a specific date and time you can be reached.

Bring Extra Copies!

Why would anyone go to an interview without extra copies of their resume? It is more than likely you will interview with several people, most of them will ask for a copy of your resume. Do yourself a favor, be prepared!

You gotta Love It!

If you want to be really successful, find a job you love! Passion for your work not only makes you more effective, it can reduce stress and make your life much more pleasant and exciting!

Getting paid to surf or to read emails - European Telework Online's review of Internet payment-for-use services

Recent months have seen an explosion of Web sites urging people to "get paid to surf" or "get paid to read emails". Is there any value in such schemes? How do they work? Can anyone join? Are they limited to the USA or North America or can people in Europe, Asia and other regions get value from such programmes? What are the risks?

European Telework Online has examined many of these programmes and searched beneath the surface hype to find out and report how these services apply for our users in Europe, North America and the rest of the world. We have tested those programmes that look realistic and worthwhile. Where the information provided openly in incomplete or unclear, we have asked the operators of the scheme searching questions.

We have selected some programmes that we believe do work and which we understand will make payments to Internet users in many countries. If you join and use one of our "tested and selected" programmes you will be helping to sustain and further develop the European Telework Online services.

Click here for a summary of our selected programmes.

We also provide an Introduction to Get paid to surf schemes and an Introduction to Get paid to read email schemes.

Below are the links and commentaries on all the programmes we have looked at.

If you have direct experience of any programme listed, please add your views by providing a review. This is not a complete list - if you know of other programmes that you would like us to review, click here to provide the details, or write to eto-info@...

Currently (March 2000) paying in Australia; Austria; Belgium; Canada; Denmark; Finland; France; Germany; Ireland; Italy; Japan; Netherlands; New Zealand; Norway; Portugal; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; United Kingdom; USA and US Territories. • AllCommunity

  • Their "get paid to surf" programme is not yet active (January 2000), although their home page says "You can now get paid to surf the web". The current offers are "get paid to read emails" and "get paid to use a particular ISP" (in some countries - no list found). Claims to pay anywhere in the world, but minimum payment is $100, so first payment may be slow to come.

  • AllPaidFor.com

  • A get paid to surf programme based on a search engine and rewards for visiting "sites that we recommend". Reward based on points and gift certificates not cash. There is a multi-layer referral programme. There is no FAQ at the site but we assume it is USA only. It doesn't seem possible to check out the search facility without registering - comments from users please!

  • BePaid.com

  • Get paid to surf programme that says it will pay (by US $ check) in US, Canada, EU countries, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. "Up to $2 per check deducted for bank fees". "More countries later this year". Facility available from "tentative date February 2000". User selects Ads to view, ads visible 5-30 seconds, selected Ads pay from £20 per hour. We will test this service if/when it becomes live.

  • BigReferral

  • A Get paid to refer others programme, plus cashback for purchasing. The site carries a "pre launch" graphic but the rest of the material implies the service is already running. We are investigating further.

  • Get paid to surf site, not yet operational ("expected launch March 2000). Plan to pay in US first, then Canada.

  • ca$hfiesta

  • A Get Paid to Surf programme that appears similar to AllAdvantage - a downloaded banner occupies part of your PC display and you are rewarded for time on line while it is showing advertisements (this may not be continuous). The pay rate is variable ("based on how many hours everyone surfed and our advertising revenues") and there is a threshold for payments of $30. Their example suggests $3 per thousand ads. Payment is in $US but participation is world wide. Reviews invited from people who have received payments from the service?

  • CashSurfers

  • Current service is standard "paid to surf" but site promises additional options, "not available yet". Rates variable according to their advertising revenues, couldn't find current/recent rates at site. Claims to be "available all over the world". We have raised some questions about this. Had system problems during December 1999.

  • Ciao.com

  • Rather a different kind of site, you earn money by posting your opinion on a product, service etc. The programme was launched in Germany and now has sites in several countries, including UK, Spain, France. Payments are made quarterly subject to a minimum (in the UK) of ten pounds sterling. In the UK, each opinion earns £0.30p, and for each person that reads that opinion (excluding yourself) you earn £0.05p. There is a joining bonus of £1. For referrals you get 30% of their earning, or 10% for people who join through your website. To earn £10 in a quarter you would need to generate 34 opinions if no-one ever reads one of your opinions. If you post one opinion and 200 people read it in a quarter that would be another way to generate £10. So its not likely to generate big money, but unlike all the passive programmes you actually do something and many people might well find it fun.

  • This site provides a range of e-commerce enabling services, including referral programmes that pay a commission when someone you refer buys something from any of the online services using ClickBank. There are also commission arrangements for referring people who set up merchant (credit card) accounts with ClickBank. The referral fees here are substantially higher than the usual "get paid to surf" programmes, but to make it work you need a website that has appropriate kinds of users.

  • A Get paid to surf programme. Not yet operational, promised for February 2000. Payments promised to be by bank transfer (SWIFT) or check drawn on a Dutch bank in US dollars (but with an admin charge of $7.50. $50 minimum payment. Higher than usual pay rate of $1.25 per hour. • DesktopDollars.com

  • This facility is active but not yet paying - "You will begin accruing time for regular payment on February 15, 1999". Earnings are credited to a "ClixCard" that can be used at "ATM machines around the world and withdraw money in your local currency"- a good idea, but only "when it becomes available" and it will then cost $1.50 deducted from any credits.

  • We think this one failed to get off the ground. In January 2000 they said "you will be advised when Harry (their banner) is ready for download . . . in seven weeks time". Now we get no response from their url (September 2000). Any news please use the "Add your comments" link below.

  • E-pilot

  • A "get paid to surf" programme with a different approach to payments. First, it offers to pay a $2 finders fee for each new referral who joins and uses the service. Second, the "pay for use" scheme relates to "click throughs". ePilot acts as a search engine, the payment (of $0.03) is triggered when you click on a result of a search. There is no apparent geographical restriction, but payments appear to be in $US only, trigger level $20, so banking charges for a non-US user could take a signficant part of the payment. There are no FAQs.

  • eformoney.com

  • A "get paid to read email" service. Geographic focus is not mentioned and there are no FAQs, but payment is quoted in £ sterling so we assume this is a UK-based, UK-focused service. This is confirmed by the subscription form which asks for "County" but not for "country". Payment basis is 10 pence (£0.10) for each email received plus 10 pence when the subscriber replies asking the sending company for more information. There is no data about the numbers of emails thatthe system is generating . . .

  • Extra $alary

  • A Europe-based facility, with information in French, German, Italian, Spanish as well as English. Original language of site appears to be Italian? Position about payment in countries not clear, "At present we are determining the optimal quotes and limits to apply in each country." Also not clear whether it is genuinely operational - "When the bar is ready you will receive a communication by e-mail". We have asked for clarification. Offers a paid to receive email service as well as paid to surf. Payment is every three months with a minimum of $100.

  • Free2net.com

  • A "get paid to surf" programme - currently (June 2000) USA only. The site lacks a FAQ section so you have to search around for the details. Payment is in "Ad$ points" per hour for up to five hours a day. Hour 1 = $0.30, hours 2 through 4 = $0.20, hour 5 = $0.10 (average = $0.20). Referrals are unusual at $2.00 per referral one time commission. Minimum payout is $30 in a "PayPal" account (see separate report). Or you can wait and get $50 by check.

  • This one presents national flags for available countries across its home page and presents national sites. Listed are N America, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, UK. However, the FAQ says "We are only able to pay US and Canada residents at this time". We are checking this out as there is some inconsistency in the impressions given at the site.

  • HotYello98.com

  • A "Get paid to refer new participants" programme. You sign up for a "free website", and you website carries a banner offering free website and other services. If someone joins through your site you get commission. If they or people who join through them buy products or services through HotYellow98.com you get further commission. Sounds good. But when you sign up the "validation process" takes you through a long, hard sell that attempts to get you signed up to the "executive programme" - in other words to "send money". We are testing out the "free" service. USA-based - no indication of geographic or other focus or limitations, but their forms only work if you claim to live in a US state.

  • ** Provisionally recommended by European Telework Online ** A UK-based pay-to-read-email programme. One of the few such programmes that declares the name and address of the owner. Payment is US $ 0.08 (or UK £0.05) for reading a message and double this amount when you visit an advertised site. For each message you have to visit either the home site or the advertiser to earn money. As with other email programmes their referral offer is one layer only, see our FAQ: "Getting paid to read emails - does it work?" We are testing this service but it is provisionally recommended.

  • ignifuge

  • A site that pays users on the basis of visits to the site. US and Canada only, "we plan to make ignifuge.com available all around the world". Not clear whether the programme has really started ("We are still in negotiation with advertising agencies to get the highest rates").

  • InboxDollars.com

  • Get paid to read emails - their payment basis is $0.05 per email message that your respond to. "It would be rare for you to receive more than one email a day", so that a reasonable monthly ceiling appears to be 30 x 0.05 = $1.50! You could well reach the payment threshold ($30) in a couple of years. However if you agree to be paid via PayPal (currently USA only, but see entry in resources database) the threshold is $10 and could be reached in a few months. You get $0.02 per mail message read by referrals, so actively promoting referrals seems to be the only way to really earn.

  • InfoPol

  • A pay-to-read-mail programme with two unusual characteristics. (1) It is based in Finland; and (2) their website shows a list of the countries with number of subscribers in each country. At mid-January 2000, there were 6727 total, with half of them being in Russia. The English language pages are rather messy and lacking in information, perhaps the Russian ones are more attractive, or perhaps this is the only such site with pages in Russian?

  • multiKredits

  • Refreshingly, a get paid to surf programme that provides a company address in the UK and contact phone numbers and email addresses in several countries - Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico. The site is in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Based on points ("Kredits") not cash, which you earn by visiting participating sites, or responding to email messages or various other activities. Some of the qualifying sites are those you might well use anyway, such as the Ask Jeeves, GoTo and About search engines. You can get cash at a rate of 1000 Kredits for $1.00, or you can exchange points for goods. With a minimum first time cash redemption of $200 - the highest such threshold we have seen - and "50-100" Kredits for visiting a site, this looks like 4000 activities before you see their money. However there are some activities with higher earning potential. There is a multi-layer referral scheme. There appear to be no geographical restrictions - most countries are listed in the registration form. We are testing this one with a view to a possible recommendation.

  • SearchCactus.com

  • A search engine with a Get Paid to Surf aspect. Some of the sites found in a search carry a special symbol and a visit to such sites earns $0.02, for up to 20 sites per day (ie up to $0.40 per day or $12.00 for a 30 day month if you work at it!). There is of course a referrals programme - you get 25% of what your referrals generate. So another four people each generating $8 per month would net you a further £8, enough to take your month's earnings to the minimum $20 threshold for a cheque to be generated. To make this work you have to log in to the searchcactus site and stay logged in while searching and visiting sites.

  • A get paid to surf programme that pays so long as users visit "at least on new url per minute" (typical European Telework Online users visit the site for an average of 12-14 minutes and stay on a page for 1-3 minutes}. We have asked what is meant by "new url"! There is no fixed payment basis, it is "a percentage of advertising revenue". Work, employment and telecommuting sites

  • 6FigureJobs

  • Job search website for professionals. Individuals can post resumes (CVs) and search for free. Employers pay a fee to post vacancies charged for searching the CVs. The database allows for countries other than USA but the overwhelming majority of vacancies appear to be US-based. There may be telework jobs in there but no way to tell - the search is geographically oriented and the search terms "telework" and "telecommute" only produce results if the advertiser happens to have used that term in the job description. It would be useful for the site to give some kind of indications of the numbers of vacancies by category, so as to avoid making searches which yield no vancancies.

  • ants.com

  • ants.com calls itself "Your freelance marketplace". The site displays listings of contract projects submitted by employers, to which contractors can respond. Responses are also displayed online so the introduction becomes a kind of cost/quality auction. Search interface shows categories and numbers of "open" projects, but detailed listing continue (irritatingly) to show "closed" projects. 60 live projects in "computing", otherwise number of projects on offer remains small (August 2000 - first reviewed February 2000). Mainly USA based projects; not all are teleworkable.

  • Association pour la Promotion des Nouvelles Technologies Administratives

  • The site offers a "free subscription" but this only applies to being on the mailing list for a newsletter. They ask for 100 French Francs per annum for a CV listing on their website; 500 Francs to be informed of invitations to tender; or 1000 Francs to add a link to your website. When checked in June 2000 there appeared to be no "offers of employment" and very few CVs, also no information about the number of visitors to the site. There are many places on the web where you can place a CV free of charge and also get links to your site free of charge. The "article of the month" in January 2000 was a report of an event held in June 1966 - we understand that it was published at APNTA site without the permission of the author. One further article has been added since (as at June 2000)Comments welcome please from anyone who knows more about this site - particularly anyone who has paid to subscribe to any of the chargeable services?

  • BizzAdvice

  • Advice service for small firms and start-ups. You can register to give advice or to get advice. There is a charging system. When last visited (August 2000) there were a few (5) "public questions" and a few advisers had handled questions but the traffic level appears to be light. There are also some forums, but these include a fair proportion of advertising stuff.

  • careers.wsj.com

  • Backed by the Wall Street Journal, this started as a site for "executive, managerial and professional jobs". Locations are USA (each state) plus a single "International" category. There are linked "global partners" in UK, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Sweden. There is no reference to teleworking/telecommuting. The site has now linked with FreeAgent.com (a contract work site, see separate review) and with FutureStep, the online service of headhunters Korn Ferry, see that review also.

  • elance

  • Site for matching "buyers and sellers of services", or freelance contracting work. Buyers post RFPs (Request for Project), Sellers can respond to these or post their own "Fixed Price Services" looking for customers. The bids appear to be on public view, leading to potential price warring. Oddly, the site still carries a "beta" label one year after the "public launch of full version", which was reported as August 1999. Quite a few messages in the elance forum about bad experiences with non-paying or otherwise suspect customers/projects. Elance does run a payments system, but this is available only to those with a USA credit card (according to their help page, August 2000).

  • Employment911

  • Employment finding and recruitment site - USA only (registration requires USA State). Provides job search across multiple job sites. No mention of teleworking, telecommuting and a recent search found no jobs with the key words telework, telecommute, telecommuting. With these "multi-search" types of sites it can be very difficult to tell which of the jobs are still actively open. This one says "Search 3 million jobs"!

  • European Telework Associates

  • Brussels-based website that claims to find work for teleworkers and supply services to companies. The site provides simple forms for both teleworkers and potential customers, but in both cases there is a "next step" - a more complex form for teleworkers, "we will contact you" for companies. There is no evidence suggesting that the service is undertaking the major promotional and marketing effort that we believe is needed to achieve success with such a programme.

  • fish4jobs uk

  • Job search and recruitment service for UK. Specify location by region or by county (or "any"), search on job title or "category" (meaning sector). No mention of telework/telecommuting. A user has pointed out that one can use 'Work from Home' as a search term, but this actually yields any job that has the term "home" in its description.

  • Free Telecommuting Jobs.com

  • A site providing a very basic search facility. When we checked (early August 2000), the feature "View all Jobs" resulted in a system index rather than an html page! Less than twenty jobs were listed. There is also a facility to post a CV (Resume). There is also a web-based forum, where one subscriber has suggested that the search facility should be enhanced so that types of jobs can be browsed.

  • Freelance Work Exchange

  • This site lists a small number of freelance market websites, all of which are also listed here at European Telework Online, and invites you to sign up for an email newsletter - we are checking the newsletter and will comment on that shortly. The site is effectively a referrals advertiser for the services that it lists, so its no surprise to find that its reviews of all the sites are glowing testimonials! Our own approach is to try to provide a more balanced description of all sites we know about, and to encourage user reviews.

  • Freelancers.net

  • UK based site at which freelancers (self employed specialists) can create a profile of their skills, plus a portfolio showing work completed, and can specifiy what types of contracts they are looking for (eg telecommute). Companies looking for a contractor can post information about projects and can search for contractors. The search is skills based and the skills are mainly ICT product skills with a strong emphasis on web-related work. There doesn't appear to be a search facility but the jobs can be listed by category. No evidence of the success rate.

  • FreetimeJobs.com

  • The idea at this site is that you have "a few hours to spare" and would like to earn extra money. You have to register to view the jobs database, then you bid for jobs selected from a single long list. Jobs are displayed ten at a time, in no apparent order (perhaps order of submission?). The registration lists most countries. A fair proportion of the jobs listed are really "business opportunities". There appears to be no follow through to find out what happened once an advertiser and a freetimer get together? We'd like to hear from anyone who has had paid work (as opposed to business opportunities) through this service please!

  • Friends From Home

  • Suggested by Marcy Sanders, who has found clerical work through this site. The site charges a membership subscription of at least $US 49.99 for six months for the basic membership, up to $US 99.99 for the "all in one" plan. In general we don't feel that people seeking work should pay, since in the normal market the employer pays the costs of recruitment, advertising, search etc. On the other hand its hard work and frustrating to plough through job sites looking for telework, if this service works it may be worth the money. We'd appreciate hearing from others who have paid to use this or other paid services?

  • Home-Business-Centre

  • New UK site (Summer 2000) with some views and suggestions about home-based working plus a jobs page that didn't (as at 6 June 2000) have any actual job advertisements. Indeed there are several sections of the site that as yet are fairly content-free.

  • Home2Work.com

  • USA-based site where job-hunters and employers can post advertisements. One attractive feature is that the types of "classified ads" are clearly categorised and the numbers of ads in each category is shown. However this may need re-thinking if the volume of postings becomes large. There are categories for "Job Listings - Telecommute Full Time/Contract Nationwide" (for USA) but not one for global telecommuters. At 16 June 2000 thess sections listed 36 postings, but some of the "jobs" were actually requests from job seekers.

  • InnoVisions Canada Jobs Bank

  • Linked to a Telework consultancy that hosts the Canadian Telework Association, this site provides "job search", resume (CV) facilities and a recruitment facility. Although this is so closely linked with telework activists, the first option in the jobs search is "Location", and all the jobs we searched had a particular "location" tag. Employers are urged to include the term "telework" in job descriptions, but a search produced no jobs with that as a keyword.

  • Internet Home Employment

  • This site presents a long and busy home page, with links to a job search sie (jobvertise.com) and links to many collections of job advertisements - all the ones we checked were USA-oriented. However the main offer at the site itself is to buy an "electronic book" called "Legitimate Home Employment" at $19.99. A second offer is to submit your resume (CV) to "over 500 job banks and recruiters", again at $19.99. The site's opening line says "This is not a scam or get rich quick programme", but the "free download" sample links yields a "Not Found". We'd like to hear from anyone who has bought the book or the resume service - please use the "add your comments" link.

  • A site offering to match people to job opportunities. Linked with the StepStone group. There is an open jobs database that can be searched. All in Italian. Comments welcome from users please.

  • A standard site that lists and searches job advertisements and enables job seekers to upload CVs. Jobs are classified as "permanent", "entry position" or "freelance contract", locations as "UK", "Euope" or "Worldwide". Ads can be posted and searched in different languages, which is an unusual and attractive approach to internationalisation. No mention of teleworking or off site working.

  • JobServe (UK)

  • A site focused on "IT vacancies in the UK", but with 10% of its vacancies outside UK. Job seekers can search for contract work or "permanent" employment and can specify the recency of postings, for example "within 5 working days". The search terms "home", "telework", "off site" may produce teleworkable jobs, but with no specific provision for teleworking. You may also provide a CV (resume) that will be circulated to recruitment agencies. There is also a directory of recruitment agencies. Employers are asked to "call the sales team".

  • Jobvertise

  • This system provides a resource through which any website owner can add a "jobs page" to their website, as well as providing a fairly typical job search facility direct to users. Four of the first five "jobs" found when browsing the "most recent 100" were actually commission based or run-your-own-business types of jobs.

  • A job search and recruitment site in Germany (in German). At March 2000 it reported 1702 employment offers and 958 job seekers - an unusual postive ratio of jobs to seekers. Comments from users sought please!

  • Kasamba!

  • A question-answering service. Visitors post a question, "experts" answer the question and may offer their services for a fee, which they determine. Anyone may register as an "expert". The idea is that clients will search for the expert they need and start a dialogue leading to chargeable work. Lost of experts have signed up, there appears to be no way to know how many clients have appeared.

  • KeyChange Outsourcing Register (Australia)

  • A facility in which contractors can enter a personal profile that can be searched by prospective clients. The search is based on keywords entered into fields, would be greatly improved by adding some self-declarative information about the database contents, eg how many people there are in some obvious categories. Keyword search is not an effective way to search for skills/experience.

  • Mondus.co.uk

  • Online services for matching buyers and sellers of services and equipment. You can register as a "supplier" or as a "buyer". As a supplier you complete a profile that identifies the kinds of products or services you can provide. The system will email you when new "orders" arrive that appear to match your profile, then you can view the requirement and propose your solution. For services the main system doesn't allow you to see competitors' quotes. For tangible products the buyer can choose between a request for quotation or an open "price contest". There appears to be a regular flow of requests for some services, particularly web design and build. The service appears to be optimised for buyers and sellers who are both in the UK.

  • monster.com

  • Despite the cutesy name this is a reasonably effective job search and recruitment facility for those who are seeking employment in a particular area, and are prepared to invest quite a lot of time in trying a number of search approaches. It would be greatly improved by the provision of some self-declarative search assistance. There is no reference to teleworking or distance working and the only way to find jobs that could be done at or from home is hit and miss. Since they have some hundreds of thousands of jobs listed this is impractical!

  • NuAspect.Com

  • A facility for contracting out elements of software development to programmers through NuAspect as an intermediary. There is a membership fee (company or programmer $20, consultant $200 - the consultant acts as a project manager should the customer need this). At March 2000 the introductory free offer was still open. There were 207 programmers registered for work.

  • OfficeTech

  • A web based "virtual staffing" service offering to match employers with teleworkers on a contract or employee recruitment basis. Teleworkers can register without paying any fees or subscriptions, employers are charged a finders fee for successful introductions. Teleworkers "world wide" are invited to register. When matched to an opportunity the teleworker has to negotiate terms with the employing company direct. OfficeTech charges the employer an introduction fee. The specialisation listed for teleworkers are a mix of office/clerical tasks and some rather generalised professional tasks such as "Information Technology" and "Web design and development".

  • OutSource2000

  • The main offer here is a Home Workers Forum, entry cost $29 for six months. Members can search jobs databases, get assistance with creating resumes (CVs). Instead of the subscription you can buy $50 of their software. Much of the software is of the kind widely promoted through "Get rich" schemes. In the sample jobs shown at the site many are really home based businesses not employment or contract work. Note that Outsource2000 also now has an "Affiliates" scheme under which people get paid for promoting the site and its products, so you may wish to be sceptical about any glowing testimonials you read! For details see entry under our "get paid to surf" listings.

  • PanEris

  • The blurb here says "PanEris is home to a collective of web developers working together as a virtual corporation." Though its not overtly clear there appears to be an invitation to join. The site seems to be a working demonstration of the team's capabilities. Recently (February 2000 moved to a new domain, many of the "old site" pages hadn't changed since 1998 when last visited in January 2000. There is a collection of "message boards" at the site, but difficult to understand the connection between the message boards and the stated purpose of the site as a whole. The private discussions of the team appear entangled with public discussions, and it appears that anyone can join. Interesting . . . . for example, there is an apparently open discussion of "Sales Leads", including potential customers' phone numbers. Comments from someone connected to the Paneris "community" would be welcome please!

  • ProsForHire.com - Find Professionals

  • A site introducing contract workers to potential employers. One of the early arrivals in the field, the site may have failed to reach sufficient volume of use to be productive, since the hit counter on the home page shows only a little over 7000 hits between August 1999 and September 2000 (unless the counter has been re-set, in which case the site is doing itself a disservice!). One reason for this low growth may be the fact that you have to register and at first it looks as though there is a fee for job seekers, since it says "Free to employers". Very oddly, when we tried to use the only open access facility, "Find a recruiting firm", the response said "Server too busy", which seems unlikely? Comments please from anyone who has used this service.

  • ResumeBlaster.com

  • ResumeBlaster is a service for creating and posting a resume (CV) to selected recruiters. Although US-based and US-oriented there is an "international" list of recruiters. We looked at one of these, who had just four UK/London jobs posted at their site. Since the recruiters have signed up for the service they can be assumed to be in active mode, and the profile created is used to select and target the recruiters who are most likely to hire you. However there is no charge to recruiters. We'd like to hear from anyone who signs up for and uses Blaster, please.

  • Smart Eric .com

  • A UK based website for self-employed professionals and freelances, mainly working from home. Freelancers can add their details to a CVs database, which prospective customerc can search. We found site response rather slow, but this may have been a transient routeing problem. There are pages with advice for self-employed start ups and marketing, plus a discussion forum (see separate entry).

  • smarterwork.com

  • A UK-based commercial "finding work" site that is focused on contract work and where the mechanism actively favours a teleworking approach. The site maintains a register of "experts" able to work in particular types of projects, and enables "clients" to post project details against which experts can bid. A list of current projects with current lowest bid appears on the public site, registered experts get more detail. Project approval, payments and resolution of disagreement are handled by the service. Uniquely, so far as we have observed, the "experts" are screened through an online testing or an offline screening before being allowed to bid for projects. Of two tests taken our tester failed one but passed the other (you do get another chance and we passed at second try!). There are now ten categories of projects - Business Consulting, Research, Document Production, Web Build Support, Legal, Software Development, Graphic Design, Writing & Editing, Tax, Translation. In some categories projects are further classified by language (English, German, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish).

  • StepStone

  • This review based on StepStone's UK service. Services appear to vary between countries, see for example Jobs Cafe in Italy, which has a very different interface and apparently a different approach. Other countries appear to run the same model as in the UK. Job seekers can register free of charge. The search includes local country and other European posts. Search response appears to be slow? Employers pay to advertise posts, and can include links to their own sites. Many advertisers are recruitment agencies. The charging rates are not disclosed at the site? No mention of telework or temporary/contract posts, this is an online facility for conventional recruitment. At March 2000 the UK site reported 15000 UK vacancies and 77000 "in Europe", across a wide range of sectors, with 60,000 job seekers' profiles.

  • Once you get past the big graphic that is the home page, and worked out that you click on the image to get into the site, there are lots of features, including a forum and a links page, plus a facility for loading your profile and a job search facility, which links to HeadHunter.net, JobBank USA and Workaholics4Hire.com.

  • Telecommuting Jobs

  • Job seekers can search a database of jobs. The job description is written directly by the job advertiser, enabling direct contract. Most of the "jobs" we examined appear to be freelance contracts rather than employment, and usually at fairly low (or undisclosed) pay rates. The job lists generally show only a one or two word title so you have to look at many to see whether they are suitable for you. Employers almost all USA based. At 13 March 2000 there was a confusing advertisement on the home pagefrom IHA (The Independent Homeworkers Alliance) - it looks like the site's search facility!

  • TeleMart

  • Website of a European project about matching employers to teleworkers. Confidence is not helped by the fact that (a) the "News" page at January 2000 promised that Telemart "will be opening for business in November 1998." and (b) key links such as the "Teleworkers Forum" don't work. This was still the case in March 2000. If you cannot move from the home page. look for the button to the bottom right of the page (hidden in a narrow window).

  • TeleTask (Australia) Skills Register

  • Telework Unlimited

  • Telework Unlimited provides a free of charge service in which teleworkers can post their offers of skills and employers can post offers of work. The offers of work are relatively few in number but some appear to be both genuine and current. Most offers are in German. The site owners also undertake telework related projects. Alhough most menu items are in both English and German, most of the detailed content is in German only.

  • The People Village

  • UK-based service for matching freelance contractors with companies/projects. New start, Summer 2000. An unusually comprehensive interface for capturing contractors' capabilities but a rather constrained facility through which the contractor must specify "job requirements". No visible mechanism for browsing to see how many and what types of projects are currently available, which reduces the credibility of the system and may limit its appeal to contractors. As with all such systems much depends on the marketing effort to get the attention of employers. The current scope of the site appears to be limited to the UK and there is no "telework" focus.

Spanish translation engine provided by us.
ability to add accented characters (as our current www.escribien.com) search definitions-synonyms-antonyms-wave (for pronunciation examples) files database (database provided by us) link to a Web page from a button (we tell you the web site to link to)
It would function as a word plug-in with buttons and icons placed in the Word toolbar.
The application would be installed automatically, so that it would appear within MS word after the application is installed.
Active X Spell check engine & lexicon components would be provided.
Spanish spell check engine provided by us (same as used in www.instant-spanish.com)
Phase 2.
Stand-alone version.
This version would work as a stand-alone word processing application, and would incorporate the following functions:
Speech recognition (Dragon Systems) http://www.dragonsystems.com/products/developer/naturallyspeaking/index.html
Spanish spell checking
ability to add accented characters
search definitions-synonyms-antonyms-wave files database (for pronunciation examples)
link to a Web page from a button
C++ Spell check engine SDK & lexicon components would be provided
C++ Text Editor component would be provided or we might possibly modify the text editor that comes with Dragon speech recognition system.  The rationale for this is that if we have to modify an editor, and translate all of its menu options, we might as well modify the one that they use, and this way achieve a tighter integration.

Zenemusic International Kft., represented online at
www.xenomusic.com, is seeking individuals in the Central European and
Former Soviet regions to assist in the development of its musical
catalog.

The work entails using knowledge of your country's music scene to
sign local artists on to our site, enabling us to sell their music
online. Though the primary focus of our catalog would be catagorized
as "world music," we are interested in a full range of styles, from
classical to jazz to alternative to techno to rock. So long as the
artist has their music available on CD, we can post it online.

This position is not intented to be full time work - it pays a
nominal monthly salary, with commission based on the amount of CD's
and artists brought in. However, for someone with local connections,
it can make for an excellent supplemental income.

For more information, please check out the site which is in its final
stages of development at test.xenomusic.com. The full site launch is
upcoming shortly.

As well, please contact

details.

The client is an architectural firm that wants to maintain a DB of new projects. The client wants an easy way to update these items and have them reflect on the site. Next, they want their visitors to be able to choose from 5 categories of projects (i.e. residential, commercial, etc) and be brought to a page that displays those properties from the DB that fall under each category. They don't want to use a dropdown menu for choosing the categories; they'd like users to be able to click on a graphic (I'll design all the graphics) and get to the page from there.
