President, CEO and co-founder of Thinkronize Randy Wilhelm proved to the GCVA audience on May 15, 2007, that you CAN fund and grow a business in the Cincinnati area. Randy, who has always had a passion for helping kids learn, has turned this desire into a successful company that is currently supporting more than nine million students and 450,000 teachers in their educational quest.
Thinkronize's main product is netTrekker, a search engine designed specifically for students in the K-12 market. "We provide highly-effective technology for enhancing the education of youth," says Randy. "It all came out of envisioning a day when
there was so much data on the web that a search engine was needed to filter it."
NetTrekker provides relevant search results based on both algorithmic and social (human) searches through an easy-to-use, intuitive interface. Randy describes, "Students are searching a database of resources that are appropriate for their use," which makes it easier and safer for them to search the web. Currently, 9.3 million students, through 450,000 teachers, at 18,000 schools, in 50 states, use netTrekker. The software has won 21 national awards, including the Best Educational Solution for 2007 from the software education industry. NetTrekker boasts a 90+% renewal rate with over 1.25 million searches taking place daily.

Inventors' Fair June 21: New Products & Young Inventors Section
Rick Kieser tests a new product at the 2006 Inventors' Fair
The annual Inventors' Fair is always a great time to see what interesting new technology is hitting the market. This year's
Fair will be no different, with 10 Presenters and 14 Exhibitors.
Items like the EZ Change Lock, which "changes the key, not the lock;" the Quick-n-Easy Boat Guide, which makes loading & unloading simple; and SlipKicks, rubber overshoes that increase safety & performance in skateboarding; all will make this year's Fair better than ever.
An added bonus is the Young Inventors section. Ten students, aged 9-12, will be showing products they developed. There are several good enough to take to market - so don't miss seeing them and meeting these budding inventors who could be tomorrow's successful entrepreneurs.

*LITTLE ABOUT FPO (FINANCIAL PROCESS OUTSOURCING) INDUSTRY
According to several analysts, F&A Business Process Outsourcing (F&A
BPO) is projected to have a yearly growth rate over 8% by 2008 and
Financial Services firms are leading the way. Within F&A, insurers
and retail banks are exploring back-office financial processes as
well as looking further up the value chain to core business
processes. At the heart of F&A BPO programs are the high volume,
repeatable processes such as Accounts Receivables, Accounts
Payables, Collections & Billing. But they represent only a portion
of the process range that can be outsourced. Full-scope BPO could
include core processes for both banks and insurers such as Treasury
Back-office services, General Ledger, Tax Computation and Filing,
among others.
*LITTLE ABOUT LPO (LEGAL PROCESS OUTSOURCING) INDUSTRY
In the last few years, the market for LPO services has taken off in
a big way for domestic players. Our process maturity and access to
world-class legal knowledge with skills at affordable rates also
give us an edge. Albeit, entry barriers are high due to sensitive
and critical nature of business, Gartner Research and Nasscom are
quite optimistic. Current addressable potential (demand) in the
United States is around $3 bn by 2015 wherein the Indian pie would
be over 60%. It is relevant to share that market tapped so far by
existing LPO service providers till date is only 4% ensuring the
huge demand of services in the sector. The industry will provide the
room for over 70,000 lawyers and other professionals in the next
coming years.
OBJECTIVES OF DISCUSSIONS
We want you to see the shape of things to come, and understand the
reasons WHY, WHERE AND HOW in the LPO & FPO space. To do this, we
are going to bring together the finest minds out there. Experts,

Mark – answers to your questions and added comments --
If you’re a sponsor at any level then your tickets are included in the sponsorship, including DV seating with DVs, and DV parking.
NO, you do not need to be a member of ACE-E to attend.
Yes, everyone may also go on the guided tour of the co-located National Museum of the USAF and the National Aviation Hall of Fame, at 4:30 p.m., June 9, as well.
Although we need
sponsorships as the only way to pay for the meals of all 100 poverty students and their parent/guardian – as our guests, we also need sponsors to help pay for the $2,300 in room rental costs, the program booklets honoring the companies who are sponsors, as well as the Awardees and their awards for changing poverty childrens’ lives. The food at our cost is $29.95 per person, so we are losing money to offer a single person ticket at $30.
All single person tickets are $30, covering about 65% of our total costs per person, done to keep costs down in order for teachers to attend.
All donations are to an IRS approved 501 c (3) charitable organization of ACE-E, and therefore tax
deductible.
Hope the above helps. You also may email me at rick@... or call me at 1-800-OK-Novak (656-6825) if you have further questions.

On Wednesday, December 6, GCVA hosted the second SoundingBoard of the year. Tom Churchwell, Managing Partner of Arch Development Partners in Chicago, served as moderator of the four-person panel consisting of Jim Cunningham of C-Cap; Dov Rosenberg of Blue Chip Venture Capital; Mike Hirschfeld of Graydon Head & Ritchie; and Eric Lombardo of Bizonics LLC.
Three companies presented: MediGeed llc, "The best paperless medical practice management system available anywhere;" Reel Kids, LLC, "Making movie magic real by inspiring and educating the next generation of movie makers;" and Polyflow Corporation, "Bringing sustainability to the polymer industry." Summaries of each presentation are found in
this e-letter and on the GCVA website.
MediGeek llc: "The best paperless
medical practice management system available anywhere."
MediGeek llc owns a practice management software solution for private physicians called Medicfusion. The product, developed by
David Berring, a Doctor of Chiropractic with a practice in Mason, helps physicians collect more and work less with fewer staff. A beta version launched in November has sold four subscriptions. The company is also in negotiations with a 1000-physician consulting firm and has 45 "hot" leads from attendance at a conference. MediGeek llc is seeking $500,000 to fund a national sales and marketing campaign.
Reel Kids, LLC: "Making movie magic real by inspiring and educating the next generation of moviemakers"
Reel Kids, LLC is an entertainment and production company specializing in educational products and services for tweens and teens. These products include an educational DVD, an interactive website, workshops and a film festival. The company is pre-revenue and is seeking $245,000 to reach their $300,000 budget.
Polyflow Corporation: "Bringing sustainability to the polymer industry"
Polyflow Corporation’s purpose is to convert plastic waste to useful products. They take post-consumer, post-industrial, plastic and rubber waste and turn it into styrene, limonene, gasoline blendstock, and other hydrocarbons. Manufacturers of plastics, rubber, cleaners, paint and adhesive, as well as gasoline blenders, can then use these materials in their products once again. CEO Joe Hensel is seeking $550k to finalize an identified bond and strategic equity financing to build Polyflow plant #1.

Homebased Sole Proprietors Generate $102 Billion In Annual Revenue
New Study Details Homebased Business Revenue, Income By Industry
WASHINGTON, D.C. –
America’s homebased sole proprietors generate $102 billion in annual revenue, according to a study released today by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The study details revenues, expenses, and income for both homebased and non-homebased sole proprietors by industrial sector.
“Sole proprietorships are a vital part of our economy,” said Thomas M. Sullivan, Chief Counsel for Advocacy. “Many are homebased micro businesses; collectively they generate a significant amount of economic activity. For the average sole proprietor, their business provides benefits of entrepreneurship that go beyond just income and revenue.”
Written by Joanne H. Pratt with funding from the Office of Advocacy, The Impact of Location on Net Income: A Comparison of Homebased and Non- Homebased Sole Proprietors (http://www.sba.gov/advo/research/rs275tot.pdf) examines
federal income tax data from year 2002 sole proprietorship returns (Schedule C).
The report presents a comparison of homebased and non-homebased sole proprietorships. For example, it finds that the average homebased sole proprietor earned $22,569 in net income while their non-homebased counterparts earned $38,243. Due to lower expenses, particularly in rent and labor costs, the average homebased sole proprietor consistently gained a higher return on gross revenues at 36 percent, versus 21 percent for the non-homebased.
The report also finds that the percent of homebased sole proprietorships was greatest in the Administrative, Support, and Waste Management; Information; and Construction sectors. For the non-homebased, the percentage was greatest in the Accommodation and Food Services; All Other Services; and Finance and Insurance sectors.
The Office of Advocacy, the “small business watchdog” of the
government, examines the role and status of small business in the economy and independently represents the views of small business to federal agencies, Congress, and the President. It is the source for small business statistics presented in user-friendly formats and it funds research into small business issues.

Mark,
Thanks for all your great support. Here are the updates from Mountain View, CA. Progressive Cooling Solutions has been doing exceptionally well both finishing in the top spots (1st Place, UC MBA New Venture Championship (internal); 2nd Runner-up
UC Spirit of Enterprise Business Plan Competition (intercollegiate); 1st Runner-up Stuart Clark Business Plan Challenge) and making some great contacts and networking (University of Oregon New Venture Championship and the MBA Jungle Business Plan Competition). Now it is on to the "Super Bowl" of intercollegiate competition, the MOOT Corp Business Plan competition in Austin, TX. I cannot wait to see the draw there... it should be interesting. More as it develops... Have a great weekend!

Hello Everyone,
First of all, thanks for all the emails of support that have come in just since the first update. You gotta love the Internet. Just a quick update. The top two teams in the 2006 MBA Jungle:
2nd place: Savium Technologies, U of Michigan 1st place: Sun Phocus Technologies, U of Chicago
6 teams tied for third and 16 teams tied for fourth! Okay, I made that last part up, but
congratulations to the two top teams. We are off to network in Silicon Valley... More as it develops...

Hello Everyone,
Marching in to the heart of Silicon Valley, Progressive Cooling Solutions, led by founder Ahmed Shuja, continues its quest to build its foundation for launch. As you may recall, PCS was one of only 24 out of over 200 applicants from six countries to receive a bid to come to Mountain View, CA to present at the 2006 MBA Jungle Business Plan Challenge. Just getting here was a big win on its continuing entrepreneurial journey. In the opening round, Progressive Cooling Solutions drew a strong field:
dayStreamer, USC Progressive Cooling Solutions, U of Cincinnati Recovered Pulp Technologies, U of Waterloo Adaptive Hearing Solutions, Stanford U IDA Technologies, UC Davis PrepMe Premium Test Preparation, U of Chicago
The top two move on to the final eight. The judges once
again had a very difficult decision, but in the end chose Adaptive Hearing Solutions, Stanford, and IDA Technologies, UC Davis, to move on to the final eight. Joining the top two from the other three tracks, the final eight shaped up as:
Adaptive Hearing Solutions, Stanford Graduate School of Business Sun Phocus Technologies, University of Chicago Savium Technologies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Silicon Servo Inc, UC–Berkeley (Haas) IDA Technologies, UC–Davis Graduate School of Management Cellugen Inc., University of Waterloo Nanodrivers, University of Waterloo Krasis, University of Texas–Austin (McCombs)
The final eight are presenting even as we email, so I will update you when the winner is chosen. In the meantime, congratulations to Ahmed, Megan Payne, and Liz Sayers on a great presentation. While not moving on to the final round, it is important to note that once again PCS has made some valuable
contacts and continues to capture the interest of a number of potential investors and advisors.
While building its network, PCS moves on to the MOOT Corp competition in Austin, TX next week. The preparation, past wins, hallway conversations, and incredible feedback and networking over multiple competitions will allow PCS to head into the "Super Bowl" of Business Plan competitions with excellent momentum. The journey continues... more as it develops...

Mark Heeson, president of the National Venture Capital
Association, opened the 2005 Year In Review meeting with an overview of the industry. He says although the belief was that after the bubble there would be a dramatic reduction in venture capital firms, this has not happened: as of 2004, the number of firms was the same as in 2001. However, the industry has seen a decrease of about 10% in the number of venture capitalists themselves.

Here is your invitation to attend the Ohio Valley Affiliates for Life Sciences (OVALS) conference March 6, 2006 and March 7, 2006 in Lexington, KY.
Since its formation in 2002, the OVALS annual "Bridges to
Collaboration" conferences have engaged and promoted collaboration among universities, research institutions, governments and businesses throughout the region.
Please see details below on how to RSVP to this event.
Why engage the OVALS region?
The founding partner universities attract and expend approximately $650 million per year on basic and applied research, which generates over 240 intellectual property disclosures per year. In 2003, the addition to OVALS of the Human Effectiveness Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory added $2 billion in research resources to the already impressive base.
In addition, this collaborative relationship contains many of the critical elements necessary to compete on a national basis:
A wide range of state-of-the-art
biomedical research facilities.
A significant number of researchers with world-class reputations in BioDefense, Entrepreneurship, Cancer, Drug Development, Cardiovascular Science.
Increased attraction and availability of capital from funds including Chrysalis.
Strategic and innovative corporate collaborations focused on commercialization of university life sciences research.
Robust entrepreneurial support systems with clear access to experienced know-how.
Strong support foundations from two state and four local governments.
Would you be able to send this announcement to your distribution list? Once, again, I thank you for your help. I hope all is well with
you.

Regardless of the weather, are you being cool? Are you helping others to stay warm?
Being Cool
Joey Cheek, US Olympic speed skater, won a gold medal in
the men's 500 meter speed skating event at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. After winning the event he took a few minutes in the media spotlight to announce that he is donating his US Olympic Committee Operation Gold money of $25,000 to Right To Play, an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play as a tool for the development of children and youth in the most disadvantaged areas of the world. He challenges other athletes, sports enthusiasts and corporate sponsors to match or exceed his contribution.
Staying Warm
“In 1979, [Ewing Marion Kauffman, entrepreneur and founder of the Ewing Marion Kauffman
Foundation] was approached by community leaders about participating in Project Warmth, which was to help people pay their heating bills in that bad winter. Having grown up in tough times [during the Depression], he very quickly agreed to give $50,000. The next year, they came back to ask again. And he said, ‘No, we didn’t solve the problem. The problem is, people still don’t have jobs, so they can’t pay their bills. Instead of taking palliative approaches, what we need to do is help people get jobs and have a sustainable lifestyle.’ And from that time he started focusing on root causes and finding novel solutions to problems.”
Attached is an update from Francine Hardaway, PhD, on programs and resources available through the Kauffman Foundation.
To: stealthmode@yahoogroups.com From: "francine hardaway, phd" <francine@...> Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 22:52:35 -0000 Subject: [stealthmode] Davos -- or Kansas City?
This is quite a week
for travel. The world's economic leaders are at Davos, the cinemaphiles are in Park City, the golfers are in Phoenix, and I am in Kansas City. You may think I'm lost, or at least misplaced, but I'm where I belong -- in discussions of entrepreneurship.
The world's leaders may be talking about what drives the global economy, but so am I.
a long wait, the Kauffman Foundation has released the materials for its program fostering technology entrepreneurship, Fasttrac Tech Venture. True to form, Stealthmode started offering this program while it was still in pilot phase, with photocopied materials and rudimentary preparation. Now I am with a group of other technology supporters in a group to share best practices and get trained on how best to deliver these materials and get the most value out of the national efforts of the Kauffman Foundation. I can't wait to go home and share what I've learned with the beta testers in our pilot
program.
The Foundation has totally re-focused on high growth businesses, and is trying to foster them at every level. For kids, they have developed (with Disney) a game called Hot Shot Business (www.hotshotbusiness.com) that is aimed at introducing young teens to the joys of the business world. If you can read, you can play this on line, starting a pet spa or a landscaping business.
For those of us who lack an inner child to play the game with, Kauffman has launched a new site called EVenturing, collecting resources for entrepreneurs. And then there's the Angel Capital Education Foundation (www.angelcapitaleducation.org) to educate potential angel investors.
But the jewel in the crown is really Fasttrac Tech Venture, the program that prepares would-be technology entrepreneurs for the realities of business. For two days, we've been sitting around discussing how best to deliver to engineers and life science researchers the
realities of starting a company: the chance that you might part company with your co-founder buddies; the day you wake up and find out your independent contractor owns your company's intellectual property; the ramifications of taking outside money from people whose motives you don't understand.
The coolest thing about the new materials is probably the toolkits - everything from dilution calculators to 6-year financial projections, employment agreements, and free access to competitive data and market research. These documents have been prepared by experts and placed online where participants in the programs can see and use them during the course of the program.
Now that this program is generally available, the real test will come: to what extent can the process for starting and growing tech ventures be standardized? If Kauffman's programs take the mystery out of running a business, will they free innovators to concentrate on
their creations or solutions? Will the Foundation's program for tech companies be as successful as its previous two programs in helping businesses grow?
On a grander scale, can this program foster American competitiveness, providing a support system for tech entrepreneurs that replaces the government support of countries like India and China? Will it raise the success rate of tech companies?
Not without the full spectrum of other initiatives -- especially those aimed at instilling the spirit of entrepreneurship in youth and the ones aimed at capital formation. The Foundation has figured out that all these pieces work together, creating an environment that both prepares us for the future and takes our country back to its roots. Face facts: when the first colonists came to America, there were no jobs waiting for them. What powered our economy yesterday will have to power it again tomorrow.
