Dear Entrepreneur,

Many of the members of The Entrepreneurial Group in
Yahoo Groups have yet to link a Yahoo ID, which you
must create or own already, to the email address you
gave to me, either as an attendee at an
Entrepreneurial Group forum or in conversation with
me.

It is ok if you haven't done this already. However,
I want to give you an incentive to initiate that
link so that you can Sign In to the group and take
full advantage of the resources available to you in
the Yahoo Groups site at:

http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup

The My_Business_Contacts database is meant to be a
source for business leads and referrals to you. In
adding record(s) to this database, it enables others
within the group to provide qualified referrals to
your business.

It also gives you an opportunity to assist business
contacts, whose names appear in the database, in
resolving a critical business need or in identifying
a qualified referral.

So, I'm emailing to you a "care package" (See
attachment TEGCarePkg.zip) consisting of the
following files:

1. oBCHowTo.txt

    This document describes the
purpose of TEG, how to join TEG,
    how business contact information
    is entered into the TEG
    My_Business_Contacts database and
    how business leads and referrals
    are made.

2. 1UpdatBC.txt (Step 1)

    Template E-mail Form Used
    to Invite Updates from Your
    Business Contact to the
    My_Business_Contacts Database.

3. 2FolowUp.txt (Step 2)

    Template E-Mail Follow Up
    To Your Business Contact
    Indicating That The Business
    Contact Information They Provided
To You Has Been Added To The
    My_Business_Contacts Database.
Fill in the underscored names with
    the column value from the
    applicable My_Business_Contacts
    database record.

4. 3RFINeed.txt (Step 3)

    Template E-mail Request
    For Introduction In Following Up
    On A Business Contact's Need
    Sourced From The
    My_Business_Contacts Database.
Fill in the underscored names with
    the column value from the
    applicable My_Business_Contacts
    database record.

5. 4RFIPorS.txt (Step 4)

    Template E-mail Request
    For Information On A Business
    Contact's Product(s) or Service(s)
    Sourced From The
    My_Business_Contacts Database.
Fill in the underscored names with
    the column value from the
    applicable My_Business_Contacts
    database record.

6. MBC11112.xls

    A Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
    containing a sample of
    My_Business_Contacts database
    records, which you may reference
    and act upon immediately.

7. Yahooid.doc

    A Microsoft Word 6.0 document
    describing the procedure for
linking a Yahoo ID to an email
address, necessary to Sign In to
    The Entrepreneurial Group at:

http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup

The objective is to get as many people involved in
updating and referencing the My_Business_Contacts
database as possible, through direct access via
Yahoo Groups at:

http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup/database

The network effects of doing this will increasingly
add value to the group in terms of lead generation.

Thank you for your interest and participation in The
Entrepreneurial Group.

Dear Entrepreneur,

A documentary film I highly recommend you see is
"Startup.com". The film spans the time frame May
1999 through December 2000 as two real life
entrepreneurs, Kaleil and Tom, evolve the concept of
optimizing municipal government via the internet
into a commercial enterprise called GovWorks.com.

In this film you'll observe the dynamics of
developing the concept, forming a management team,
negotiating with Venture Capitalists, getting
funded, ramping up, buying out minority
shareholders, valuing a company, getting access to
power, gaining media exposure, celebrating
victories, enduring setbacks, answering to the board
of directors, forcing a co-founder out, praying,
winding down, etc. The bond and tension between
Kaleil and Tom is real as you witness them maturing
in this process.

The dot-com phenomenon gave hope and confidence to a
generation that wanted to make a difference. Sure,
there was a lot of hype. But, the ambition to
succeed at something that proves valuable attracts a
following. All at the risk of invigorating or
demeaning personal and professional relationships.
You be the judge.

Dear Entrepreneur,

On October 4th and 5th, I attended C-Cap's
Entrepreneur Bootcamp, "From Start To Financing", an
intensive 1 1/2 day workshop for growth-company
entrepreneurs and future entrepreneurs.

The program was excellent. Topics were relevant to
entrepreneurs starting technology based businesses,
with good dialog between knowledgeable presenters
and attendees.

Especially helpful were the one-on-one sessions in
which one angel, one advisor and an entrepreneur had
the opportunity to review and discuss the
entrepreneur's business concept.

From: Mark Bruemmer, CEO
          NetMotifs, Inc.
          (tegmarkb@...)

Dear Entrepreneur,

It was brought to my attention that the procedure
for linking your email address, which I use to add
new members to theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo
Groups, to a Yahoo ID is somewhat Byzantine (defined
as: highly complicated, intricate and involved).

I apologize profusely for the hassle you may have
experienced. I want to make it worth your while to
take the steps necessary to access
theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo Groups.

There are many features in Yahoo Groups, such as
accessing the My_Business_Contacts database,
accessing meeting agendas, accessing the group's
member list, having the ability to contribute
documents and links to the group, accessing the
group calendar, etc. which are important to group
communication and helping others to achieve their
business objectives.

So, I've documented the steps that a moderator of
the group takes to add new members to the group as
well as documented the steps that new members must
take to link their email address to a Yahoo ID.

In this documentation, it is NOT necessary for you
to create a new yahoo email account (ie:
emailid@...).

Therefore, I've created a document named, YAHOOID.DOC,
and have posted it on theentrepreneurialgroup site in
the TEG Using Yahoo Groups folder at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup/files/

I have also attached the YAHOOID.DOC file, in
Word 6.0 format, to this email.

In summary, following are the steps documented in
YAHOOID.DOC you must take to link your email
address, the same email address in which you
received this email message, to a Yahoo ID to then
gain access to theentrepreneurialgroup site in Yahoo
Groups:

1) To Sign In to theentrepreneurialgroup group:

Please print these instructions and follow them
carefully. The objective of the initial Sign In
for a new member of the group is to link the
email address you supplied to the group
moderator with a Yahoo ID that you create.
Steps 1a through 1l are for the initial Sign In
     only.

     1a) Please visit:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup
A message displayed to the right indicates
you are not recognized as a member of the
          group.

1b) Click on the Conversion Wizard link.

1c) Enter the email address you supplied the
moderator in the entry field [No Password]
          and click the Continue button.

1d) The Authorization Code web page is
          displayed, thereby initiating an email
message with an authorization code being
sent to the email address entered in step
          1c above.

1e) You will receive the Authorization Code
email in your email inbox, at the email
          address supplied in step 1c.

1f) From this email message, get the
authorization code and go to the
Authorization Code web page in step 1d,
enter the authorization code and click on
          the Continue button.

1g) If you have an existing Yahoo ID, then
enter the Yahoo ID and the password and
click on the Sign In button (Go to step
1k). Otherwise, click on the Register For
Yahoo ID Now button (Go to step 1h).

1h) Enter a Yahoo ID, a password, an alternate
email address and complete the Yahoo ID
Registration form. Make the password easy
to remember and write the password down and
keep it in a safe place. Click the Submit
          This Form button.

1i) The Registration Completed web page is
displayed. Click on the Continue to Yahoo
          Groups link.

1j) You will receive a Congratulations web page
indicating that your email address has been
successfully linked to a registered Yahoo
ID. Click on the View My Groups link.

1k) A Yahoo Groups web page is displayed with
all groups associated with the Yahoo ID
          displayed as links. Click on
          theentrepreneurialgroup link.

1l) You will then see the
          theentrepreneurialgroup home page:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup.
Now click on one of the many links on the
left hand side, such as Messages, Post,
          Members, Calendar, Files, Polls and
Bookmarks. You are now successfully signed
          in to theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo
          Groups.

Steps for subsequent sign ins follow after a Yahoo
ID has
been linked to the email address in step 1c.

     1m) Please visit:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup
          Click the Sign In link.

1n) On the Sign In page, you will enter your
Yahoo! ID and supply a password. Then
click on the Sign In button at the bottom
          of the page.

1o) You will then see the
          theentrepreneurialgroup home page:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup.
Now click on one of the many links on the
left hand side, such as Messages, Post,
          Members, Calendar, Files, Polls and
Bookmarks. You are now successfully signed
          in to theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo
          Groups.

Note: You must always sign in to Yahoo! Groups to
       gain full access to theentrepreneurialgroup
       group services.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank
you for your consideration and continued interest
and participation in The Entrepreneurial Group.

BIZPLANIT
What advice would you give to an entrepreneur who
has a great business idea, but doesn't currently
have connections with potential investors?

JON STAENBERG
Well I think that it's really the job of an
entrepreneur to go out and "create connections". I
look for teams that will make things happen, and an
important component of that is the ability to
develop relationships with the right people. I also
find that the way that I'm sold a concept during
early introductions is often indicative of the level
of success the team will have in selling and growing
the business after an investment is made. So in
some regards I think it's analogous to a job
interview. That very first time you walk in with
hopes of securing a new job, you are in a selling
mode. And that same type of approach is just as
important for entrepreneurs who are pitching to new
investors. Those first exchanges are important and
they form lasting impressions.

BIZPLANIT
What type of business plan packages do you like to
receive initially?

JON STAENBERG
At first I like to see a short 2 to 3 page document
that outlines a solution to a market opportunity and
gets me excited and interested to learn more about
the company and the team. I also find it useful at
this stage to review a well-organized PowerPoint
that walks me through highlights of the business
concept and the benefits of the business model. If
I like what I see at that point, the next step is to
request the complete business plan and financial
package and start moving closer to the due diligence
phase.

BIZPLANIT
What are your specific goals during that early read
of the business plan?

JON STAENBERG
At the start I don't attempt to determine if the
business plan is "perfect" or if it answers every
question I might have because it can't at this
stage. Instead, I'm trying to establish a feeling
for what the business plan tells me about their
presentation strengths and their ability to sell an
idea or a business concept. I'm trying to discover
if there's merit in the overall vision of the
business and if there's strength in the team behind
the business.

JON STAENBERG
Then again, things like proper grammar, spelling and
organization are very important too. Sometimes on
that "first pass" of the business plan I'm looking
more closely for reasons to put it down, get rid of
it, or move on to another deal. So for example, if
I discover a typo in the very first sentence, then I
have very little reason or motivation to go any
further with it. You'd be surprised how often that
kind of thing occurs. The point is that details are
also important, and mistakes of this sort send a
message of carelessness. Frankly it turns me off as
a potential investor almost immediately.

BIZPLANIT
How have changes in the markets altered the flow of
business plans that land on your desk?

JON STAENBERG
We're seeing maybe 10 to 20 percent of the business
plans that we saw during the boom times. But then
again, the quality of the plans that we see today is
on average much higher than before. My sense is
that the "real entrepreneur" is back, and many of
the individuals who had dreams of becoming
entrepreneurs when things were a little easier are
back to whatever they were doing before the funding
bubble. Also, quantity can be deceptive. It's
really the quality of the plan, team and potential
fit with us that matters the most.

BIZPLANIT
What are some of the things you look for in the
business plans you read today?

JON STAENBERG
I like when I can be shown that you've identified a
market condition that needs solving, and that you
really "know" the current or potential customer
base. When I see a business plan where I've been
convinced that the management team has gone out and
demonstrated that a customer exists and that they
know these customers intimately that captures my
attention. Naturally all the other elements come
into play when deciding to make an investment, but
I'd say that it's this intimate understanding of the
customer and how to solve their problem that's of
interest to me.

BIZPLANIT
You must receive a lot of unsolicited business
plans, any advice on that topic?

JON STAENBERG
My recommendation is that you really need to have a
connection with an investor or some type of an
introduction to increase your chances of your
business plan being seriously considered. This
doesn't mean that I don't review unsolicited plans.
But it often surprises me just how little some
business plan writers consider the specific criteria
that are of interest to specific investors. Again,
connections and introductions are important, but if
you decide to send a plan unsolicited then I
recommend really doing some homework so you can
target potential investors who will be most
interested in your deal.

BIZPLANIT
Any thoughts about how companies should use a
business plan for more that just raising capital?

JON STAENBERG
We really view the goals and strategies outlined
within the business plans of the companies we become
involved with as a measurement stick for future
performance. My view is that that the ideas
expressed in the plan become the operating
expectations of the business and the management
team. It's rather easy just to put down exciting
possibilities on paper and call it a business plan.
But we look for plans where the management team
understands that those benchmarks outlined in the
document are now goals which are expected to be
achieved. I think it brings a whole new level of
thought to business planning when the entrepreneur
realizes they'll be held accountable to the goals
outlined within the plan. It becomes a living,
breathing guide to run a successful company - which
is really what it should be.

Dear Entrepreneur,

For those attending The Entrepreneurial Group (TEG)
meetings, beginning with the October 24th meeting,
the attendee list is now appended to the meeting
agenda. The October 24th meeting agenda is the
document named TEG11024.DOC in the TEG Meeting
Agendas folder posted at theentrepreneurialgroup web
site at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup/files

Also, I have attached the TEG11024.DOC file, in
Word 6.0 format, to this email message.

TEG membership online is now over 70. There has been
good discussion within the group and support of
others wanting to realize their objectives in
venture creation and business ownership.

Dean Carrol writes:

Hi all,

I will probably not be able to make this month's
meeting due to another conflict! :-(

I have incorporated my business and secured a domain
name. I have a friend, a former boss, in Milwaukee
that would like to open an office there for my
business. I would like to develop the business as
a franchise operation but have been told that I
cannot do this until I am in business for a period
of time. What is the best legal working
relationship that I can have with this fellow in
Milwaukee?

Right now, I have modified a simple contract from
the internet requesting that he return 30% of
business generated to me in return for use of my
tradename and materials. He is out of work also, so
I don't want to burden him unnecessarily. The only
overhead I have is postage, telephone, internet
provider and business equipment at this time.

I will really appreciate your advice, thanks.

Dean Carroll.

Please contact Dean at DeanHCarroll@... if you
can advise him on this business issue.

Chris Telling is moving forward with his business
concept in Digital Asset Management (DAM) software
technologies. The new company name is CAREY DAM and

I'm still encouraging TEG group members to link

Dear Entrepreneur,

The terrorist acts in New York and Washington, D.C.
on September 11, 2001, are truly horrific. To know
that such tragedies involving thousands of innocent
people was masterminded by intelligent individuals
working cooperatively in a highly coordinated
suicide attack seems inconceivable. Their acts of
aggression merely serve to magnify the darkness of
humanity.

These events shed light on the fragility of the
freedoms we enjoy today in the United States. Our
country was founded by those escaping persecution
and by those desiring new opportunities and freedoms
in creating a better life for themselves and their
families. These immigrants brought with them their
courage, their culture and their ethics. Our
heritage strengthens and affirms the system of
government, the application of capitalism, the
economics of free enterprise, the spirit of freedom,
and the principles of justice that we value as US
citizens today.

In our diverse world, there will always be people
who disagree. The best we can do is to provide and
support an unbiased and fair system through which
voices are heard, wise counsel is made available,
agreements are signed, violence is held in check and
justice is allowed to prevail. To be free, I
believe, is to live within the boundaries of laws
that respect fundamental human rights.

Nothing can ever fully compensate the victims or
their loved ones in this absurd tragedy. The
profound pain, wounds and scars of their suffering
have left their indelible mark on them and the
American psyche. The collective experience of
freedom loving people around the world reacting to
this event evokes a wide range of emotions from
bewilderment to anger, revenge and fear. Yet, it
strengthens our courage and resolve to expose,
confront and combat a menace that threatens our
safety and security.

In the short term, the battle to be waged against
terrorism involves penetrating, monitoring and
dismantling human intelligence networks. Certainly,
technology plays an increasingly important role in
discovery and tactical advantages. However,
diplomatic and economic sanctions imposed against
those involved in or associated with ("Harboring")
terrorist activities in combination with technical
surveillance systems may prove to be more effective.

But it may be unrealistic to expect immediate
results. Despots like Idi Amin, walk the streets of
Riyadh, while Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein over
decades still retain power in their countries in
spite of economic sanctions and political pressures.
Yet, the current prosecution of former Yugoslavia
President Slobodan Milosevich for war crimes against
humanity while in power is a step in the right
direction in terms of holding state authorities
accountable for their actions.

Hopefully, the American experience will not move in
the same direction as that of the British and the
Irish Republican Army in terms of sustained
terrorist activities in a Western civilization.

In the long term, we must strive to reconcile
differences among people. Because the source of the
"evil" that motivates people to perform such
destructive acts is a fundamental belief system very
different from our own. Open communication and
acceptable forums for free expression is vital. To
be effective, people must express genuine interest
in and awareness of others around them. Tact and
wisdom on our part may persuade the dissidents, who
choose to make us their enemies, to be more
receptive to a better solution and way of life.

"We have nothing to fear, but fear itself."
- Winston Churchill

New York City

It was one of the wonders of the modern age.
Dedicated April 4, 1973, it had a name, like the
Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Empire
State Building, that transcended geographic
qualification. When someone said, "The World Trade
Center", you immediately recognized where it was and
what it represented.

In the mid-1970's my father, a Vice-President of
Canteen Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Trans World Airlines, was responsible for selecting
and managing the software systems used in the
commissaries of The World Trade Center. This
included the Windows On The World restaurant in
Tower 1, the North Tower. He spent over 3 years on
this project, commuting between our home in Kansas
City and NYC. There was always a hint of pride when
I was asked, "Where does your dad work?", to which I
responded, "The World Trade Center".

Up close and from a distance, those majestic towers,
simplistic in their exterior design, made a strong
statement about where you were and where it stood in
relation to the world's financial community. It was
most significant that there wasn't just one, but two
of these skyscrapers made visible on a clear day to
one in ten Americans.

In the Spring of 1978, I remember going to the South
Tower and pressing the button to floor 100,
wondering what tenants might be there. When the
elevator doors opened, I stepped onto a floor that
was completely vacant, no carpeting, no partitions,
no furniture, nothing except open space, concrete,
columns and windows. Recently, I learned that each
floor covered one acre. On that particular day, I
happened to be the sole occupant on the 100th floor
of Two World Trade Center.

Many years ago, Donald Trump unveiled a proposed
design of a complex that included a 150 story tower
surrounded by several 70 story buildings to be
located on Manhattan's west side. Those plans have
since been shelved. If such edifices inspire most
people with awe and a handful of others with
malicious intent, then how do we vote on such
projects in the future? What then replaces the
world's fifth and sixth tallest buildings that are
no longer there?

architectural challenge of the 20th century"

Washington, D.C.

If you've ever flown into National Airport, now
called Ronald Reagan National Airport, in
Washington, D.C. you are impressed, particularly at
night, with the beauty of design and juxtaposition
of our nation's monuments. The Mall is there, with
its Washington Monument, Jefferson and Lincoln
Memorials, and reflecting pools, Capitol Hill and
the White House, too. Across the Potomac is the
Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetary.

The scene imbues a sense of heritage, national
pride, and power. It is in this place that laws are
enacted and enforced, public policies are made,
influence is leveraged and world leaders convene.

I've always referred to D.C. as a very cosmopolitan
city. From third world taxi cab drivers to Asian
cuisine to European style architecture to
representation from all over the globe, it is a city
of world citizens. Rarely does a weekday go by that
I don't tune in to National Public Radio from
Washington.

In November 1991, I began working with Systems
Research and Applications (SRA), based in Arlington,
Virginia, in the CASE Technologies group. It was an
opportunity for me to further develop my skills in
project management, systems architecture, design and
software development using Computer Aided Software
Engineering (CASE) toolsets. Also, I was given a
chance to work with some of the best in this
technology.

Whether seen from the Metro, the expressway or from
a window seat on an airplane, the Pentagon nearby
always seemed impenetrable. Now, to have it's walls
breached in this manner is truly galling.

Eyes On The Future

How do we reconcile our inherent instinct of
self-preservation with commercial aircraft being
hijacked and piloted by suicidal zealots hell bent
on destruction? Evidently the unthinkable has
happened. How do we possibly defend and protect
ourselves from such devastating acts in the future?

In an article entitled, "US weighs new forms of
electronic surveillance following attacks" by Agence
France-Presse dated September 14, 2001, the field of
Biometrics, including face-scanning technology, iris
recognition and hand geometry, holds promise for
authorities requiring a more thorough system of
identification.

It is now a new world in which inconveniences may be
the price we pay for protecting and defending the
freedoms we cherish. The terrorists managed to
compromise a basic trust in commercial air travel.
Not unlike the Tylenol episode, what formerly passed
for safe, secure travel via commercial airlines must
now be repackaged as "tamper proof".

In conclusion, I want to express my deepest sympathy
to those affected by the events of September 11th.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Finally, I want to include an email I received from
the editor of Silicon Alley Daily regarding his
staff's reports and reflections on last Tuesday's
events.

What Can Be Said at a Time Like This? (or, Someone Just Answered My
Rhetorical Question, 'How Can Things Get Worse?')

  by Jason McCabe Calacanis

When I saw the second tower fall, I broke down. Please wake me from
this awful dream. This is just not possible. I put my head down on my
desk because I really couldn't look anyone in the eye for fear my
sobbing would turn into hysterics. Keeping it together is not an
option at a time like this.

Twenty of us were huddled around the 14-inch TV in the office. No one
was talking. We all knew that despite the heroic work of the
firefighters and rescue crews, there was no way to get everyone out
of the buildings.

New York City is huge, but we all knew many people who worked in, and
in some cases lived around, the towers. Some of us knew members of
the emergency crews risking their lives to save the lives of others.

My brother Josh left the New York City police force earlier this year
to join, as fate would have it, the fire department. It was a
lifelong dream for him and the rest of my family, because my
grandfather was a New York City firefighter. When the synapse was
finally bridged in my brain yesterday, I scrambled to find out where
he was. He was off duty, thank God, because he would have been the
first person to run into the towers; it's in his DNA.

Josh worked last night climbing into the rubble four stories
underground, according to my dad. His rugged gear was ripped to
shreds. He got home at 4:30 this morning, took a two-hour break to
kiss his kids and wife, and headed back to the horror.

Remembering the Towers

Clearly, saving the people in the wreckage is the most important
thing to consider at a time like this. However, as shallow as it
makes me feel, I'm feeling a crushing sadness at the loss of the two
gleaming towers that seemed to soar into the sky.

Yesterday's bombing was supposed to send a message, and it did. As a
lifelong New Yorker, I take a certain pride in the city and
specifically the Towers. As a kid growing up in Brooklyn, one of my
first memories was a trip my family took to the observation deck. It
was the most amazing trip of my life.

For years, as I traveled to and from the brownstones in Brooklyn, I
would always take the Brooklyn Bridge instead of the more efficient
tunnel into the city so I could see the view of Manhattan from
downtown Brooklyn. I'll never look at the city that same way again.
I've always felt safe here. I don't anymore.

The Towers always amazed me, and over the past couple of years I've
attended dozens of affairs at the World Trade. The last time I went
to Windows on the World for a benefit dinner, I took a moment on the
way to the bathroom for my ritual: I pressed my forehead to the
glass, just as I did when I was a kid, and looked up and down and all
around. Magical.

An Array of E-Mails and IMs

Throughout the day, like many of you, I turned to the Internet for
information and reaching out, sending e-mails and instant messages to
find out if everyone I know was okay. My friend relayed a story from
his firefighter brother-in-law via IM to me.

His brother-in-law drives a fire truck and was one of the first on
the scene. As his crew ran into the towers, he stayed with the truck
in line with procedure. The building started to buckle, and he
watched as people started jumping out of the windows, before turning
away from the horror. He couldn't watch, but he could hear the bodies
hitting the ground. The building collapsed and his entire company of
firefighters, the people he worked with every day, was gone.

The reports I'm hearing from friends on the scene is that there are
only a handful of survivors.

My e-mail started piling up with people checking in, and many of my
former employees contacted me to make sure I was alright. Some of
these folks left under bad terms and some were laid off as we
"right-sized" over the past year. It didn't matter yesterday; the
state of affairs had done away with any animosities or differences.

There is no silver lining to something like this, but if we all
appreciate each other and our lives together a little more, that
can't be a bad thing.

Perspective

The night before the tragedy, I was at a party for Bust magazine at a
downtown bar. I saw many of the friends I've made as the editor of
Silicon Alley Reporter over the years, titans of the rise of the
Alley like Glen Meyers from Rare Medium and Jeff Dachis and Craig
Kanarick, formerly of Razorfish. Over the past couple of months, I've
hung out with many of the Alley's former high-flyers, commiserating
over the crushed stock market, the recession, and the how ugly it was
to run a business these days.

It's taken a year for the people in our generation to get used to the
economic crash, the layoffs, and the fact that things would not
always go our way. The last year has been trying for all of us,
myself included.

For the first time in my life, I had to pull back. I had to lay off
people I loved working with and who did a great job. I had to deal
with the frustration of realizing that everything I touch doesn't
instantly turn to gold like it did in past years. It's been humbling
to be an entrepreneur in this market. As the kids like to say, it
sucks.

Last week, I told someone that I knew we were at the bottom of the
market because things couldn't get any worse.

I've never been so wrong in my life.

Taking Back Our Lives

I sent everyone home from work yesterday, but I told them to come in
today. That was not an easy decision, even though we're four miles
away from the scene.

Frankly, I didn't feel like coming back to work today. I'm still in
shock, still worried about my brother, and still wondering if this
will happen again.

However, we have to reclaim our lives at some point--the sooner, the
better. Our lives have forever changed and I'm scared. For the first
time in my life, I really feel like things are totally out of control
and there is nothing I can do about it.

There is no easy way to end this editorial. I don't have a clever
"out-tro" or quip in me today. All I can think to say in closing is
that I hope you and your loved ones are safe, and if you lost anyone
in this tragedy my thoughts and prayers are with you.

God bless. Jason

A DAY OF TERROR

eSpeed Offices Destroyed; Fate of Company's 500 Employees Unknown

  by Brian Morrissey

Like all of New York and the country, Silicon Alley was left scarred
by yesterday's terrorist attack, as B2B electronic marketplace
eSpeed's headquarters were destroyed.

The company made its offices at One World Trade Center, on the 103rd
floor. At 8:48 a.m., less than an hour after taking off from Boston's
Logan Airport bound for Los Angeles, a hijacked American Airlines
plane slammed into the north tower of New York City's tallest
building, leaving a charred ruin of the top third of the building
before it crumbled to the earth below two hours later.

ESpeed, which provides a platform for real-time trading involving
corporate and municipal bonds, last reported nearly 500 employees.

Its parent company, London-based Cantor Fitzgerald International,
which spun off eSpeed in a 1999 IPO, had offices on the 101st, 102nd,
103rd, 104th, and 105th floors of the building, employing about 1,000
people. The company said it did not know how many employees were in
the building at the time of the attack, or how many survived the
disaster.

"All our thoughts and prayers are with our New York colleagues and
their families and friends at this time," eSpeed Chairman Howard
Lutnick said in a statement. "In a very difficult and confused
situation, we are doing all that we can to determine more about the
situations of colleagues."

(Another Alley company, electronic exchange Instinet, also had
offices at One World Trade Center, on the 13th and 14th floors. A
company spokeswoman confirmed the offices, but did not say how many
employees worked there or any other information.)

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Cantor Fitzgerald
staff in Los Angeles listened in horror as the tragic events unfolded
at the New York office. "I think a plane just hit us," the paper
quoted one New York employee telling the Los Angeles office.

The Journal reported one New York employee pleading, "Somebody's got
to help us ... We can't get out ... The place is filling with smoke."
The call cut off shortly afterwards.

Silicon Alley Regroups

  by Brian Morrissey

Yesterday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center shook New
York to its core, leaving downtown in rubble and the city's famously
voluble citizens quietly searching for answers to unspeakable acts of
terror.

In Silicon Alley, people tried to get in touch with friends and loved
ones who worked in the World Trade Center, but often ran into jammed
airwaves, as cell phone service in New York turned spotty. Most Alley
companies closed for the day, while message boards usually devoted to
flaming Alley execs turned into grieving rooms.

Immediately after the attacks, Upoc users fired off messages to each
other, reacting in disbelief to the tragedies that unfolded one after
the other as the morning wore on. News sites, from MSNBC to CNN.com,
were jammed with information-hungry Web surfers. At the Alley's
FuckedCompany.com, Philip Kaplan took a day off from dishing gossip
on dot-com declines to open a forum for discussing the terrorist
attacks. Vault.com set up message boards for employees from the World
Trade Center's largest tenant, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

With the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq closed, business in the
Alley has ground mostly to a halt. Under orders from the city, all
businesses south of 14th Street were closed, shutting the doors of
many Alley firms.

Agency.com, which has offices at Exchange Place, less than a mile
from the World Trade Center, found its building engulfed is ash and
smoke. Melissa Holden, a spokeswoman at the company, said some
employees left the area after the first attack, while others waited.
Holden said she and some others were going to leave after the initial
attack on the north tower. "Luckily, we waited," she recalled today.

Agency.com set up a website for employees to check in, talk about the
events, and find updates on when the office will be open again.
"We're spending today getting in contact with everyone," she said,
adding that the company does not believe any employees were injured.
She doesn't expect the office will be open this week.

Some Agency.com employees are working from the company's Midtown
offices, while others are working from home. Holden said Agency.com
executives are calling clients to reassure them that the company will
continue its client work. "We're going day by day," Holden said.

RTS Reactions to Yesterday's Tragedy

Today we start the hard work of trying to put our lives back
together after the unimaginable horror that transpired yesterday.
I've asked members of our staff, both editorial and business, to
write about what they're feeling and thinking today. At a time like
this, sharing our thoughts and feelings is part of the healing
process. We will be resuming business coverage in our various
newsletters in the course of the week. We welcome your letters and
stories at letters@... , some of which we will
publish in the next couple of days. Stay strong, Jason

David Roberts, executive assistant

My first reaction upon seeing the images on television was disbelief.
I contacted the friends and family that I could reach given the
strain on phone lines and mobile phones, and succeeded in reaching a
few people, letting the out-of-towners know I was okay, and checking
in with local loved ones. Thankfully, I knew that most people in my
life had little reason to be in the financial district.

My primary concern, though, was my new roommate, a friend from my
hometown, who had recently arrived to pursue his writing career. Sean
was somewhat intimidated by his move to the city, but was certain it
was the step he needed to take. He had gotten a job transfer to a
national chain bookstore, which was located at 5 WTC. Tuesday was his
second day on the job, and he had left the apartment at 8:10 a.m.

I was unable to reach Sean after I first heard the news, and was all
but certain that he had made it to his destination before or just as
the events were occurring. My concern was turning into serious worry
as more events unfolded, and communication became impossible. I was
horrified at the idea that I might have to contact his family and
friends back home with sad news. By 2:00 p.m. I had left three
voice-mail messages on his cell phone, to no response. There was
nothing to do but wait. Finally, at about 2:30 in the afternoon, Sean
reached me, and was understandably shaken but unharmed. He had made
it back to the apartment safely.

Through a series of serendipitous events, he was late for work,
missed his connecting train, emerged from the subway after the first
crash, and actually witnessed the second. Once he understood what was
going on, he made every effort to get away. The A line he had
commuted in was now closed. He was fortunate enough to catch the 1/9
train as far as 96th Street before they closed the subway system, and
before either building collapsed.

The images we saw on television were nothing compared with his
descriptions, and his interactions with people on the ground. I am
thankful that he and everyone else I know are okay. I think about
that as I continue to process these events. The important things have
become very clear to me since this has unfolded.

Karen Sharkey, classified account manager

Yesterday's events still feel a bit unreal to me, but as the
individual stories unfold--and I walk past street and building
barricades and closed businesses--the horror is sinking in. And it is
devastating.

My family has been fortunate--my brother, who is an attorney at
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, was safely evacuated from the 72nd floor
of 2 WTC. He was in the stairwell on the 20th floor when the top of
the building collapsed. I can only imagine his state of mind. He told
me that people were not panicking, just moving dazedly but steadily
and, "to quote Jerry Garcia, it was 'a long strange trip.'" My
parents, isolated and insulated in Bay Ridge, were glued to the TV
set, my mother with her omnipresent oxygen tank. What a horror for
parents, especially elderly ones. (The street noise from redirected
Verrazano Bridge traffic, which will blare outside their window
today, will probably be an improvement over yesterday for them.)

My personal worst moment as a parent yesterday was hearing that 200
firefighters and 85 police officers were unaccounted for--luckily for
me, my firefighter son lives in Florida now, but he knows at least 40
firefighters in New York City and is uncertain about their situation.
He is as upset and angry as I have ever known him to be about the
worst day in that Department's, and New York's, and the United
States' history. As am I--but I am grateful that I did not experience
the horror of a loss as great as those of the parents of the
firefighters, police officers, and civilian victims of the attack.

Kathie Fries, freelance researcher

I just want to stop thinking about the unbelievable images that
entered my brain the second I stepped out of the elevator at my
office. I moved to New York six weeks ago, and will only be working
here through October. This job should have been a small and exciting
memory for me, my first New York credit to get me started in the
city. But now, the shortest employment I've ever taken will last with
me forever, terrifying and huge.

Mark Frieser, conference producer

I woke up this morning hoping that yesterday's events were just a
horrible and terribly vivid dream, but sadly it was all too real.
From the deserted, quiet streets to the sound of fighter jets flying
overhead, I know the world as we knew it is gone, and the way we live
as New Yorkers and Americans has changed forever.

I consider myself very lucky not to have been downtown yesterday.
I've been thinking about how I used to take my friends from out of
town to the WTC when I was a kid because it was the best place to see
all of my city, New York. Those structures, which were not only
beautiful but an incredibly innovative engineering feat for the time,
were a symbol of the strength and power of our city. It's very
saddening, and it's only going to become worse as the casualty
figures come in and we respond as a nation to this attack.

I am still shocked, but I am certain of one thing: We will prevail.
We will rebuild the WTC, and we will prevail over the terrorists by
showing them that we will never surrender our lives to fear.

Doug Mintz, editor, VentureReporter.net

There is little anyone can say to dull the pain or lift the spirits.
Thinking back on the events of yesterday must be both a personal and
communal experience. The question that we must confront together,
however, is how to proceed.

Israelis often say that terrorism only works if you let it change
your lifestyle. They are, of course, right--yet, we have never before
faced the terror they face on a regular basis. So how do we react as
our hearts and souls fill with concern, worry, shock, and, most of
all, fear?

We must face the fear we feel and conquer it.

We must memorialize the lives of the accidental heroes so that we do
not forget them, and we must continue to live and work and cherish
life as much as we can, knowing the pain so many will feel. To do
otherwise is to confirm the validity of the terror and to shy from
the fear.

Dakota Smith, staff writer

I am sickened and saddened by yesterday's violence. My prayers go to
those who are no longer with us, and to the families of the victims.
I am also amazed at the grace and support I have witnessed in the
last 24 hours from hundreds of New Yorkers.

Cathie Calacanis, editor, iHealthcareWeekly

My mother never let any of her children leave the house in the
morning without a kiss good-bye (and there were seven of us trying to
get to work or school on any given weekday morning--with one
bathroom, I might add). Nor did my father ever leave for work without
coming into our rooms and, whether we were awake or asleep, kissing
us good-bye. As we walked to the subway, it was mandatory that as you
passed under the windows of our sixth floor apartment you turn around
and wave up to my mother who always perfectly timed your pass--in
between making breakfast and bagging lunches.

Yesterday reminded me of those mornings, and why my parents did what
they did. Each day presents a set of unknowns; even the simple notion
that everyone will be together again at the dinner table is not a
given. And that was on my mind yesterday as I began to think about
all the people who would not make it home for dinner and the ones who
would be waiting in vain for a loved one to return.

Yesterday evening when I returned home, my young neighbor, who has
3-year-old twins with another child due in about a month, was sitting
on her stoop with a phone in hand. She was awaiting word of her
husband who worked on the 102nd floor of one of the towers. He called
yesterday morning after the first plane hit to say that he was okay.
But that was before the second plane hit and the buildings
subsequently collapsed.

This morning, she was still on the stoop with a phone in hand, but
with no word of her husband. I'm sure that when he left for work
yesterday morning he kissed his wife and kids good-bye, fully
expecting to see them later on. I'm sure his wife and kids expected
him to return home to them that evening, as he always did.

Thankfully, my family members all made it home for dinner last night.
Despite my relief and gratitude that they are all safe, I feel a deep
sadness. I just keep thinking about how we never know what the day
holds in store for us, and how yesterday forever changed the lives of
so many people. I have also been thinking a lot about what mornings
in the home of a terrorist are like. Do they kiss their loved ones
good-bye in the morning?

Bill Alena, online sales director

In the past 28 hours I have gone through many emotions: fear,
sadness, anger, and a strong sense of nationalism. To my own personal
dismay, the sadness and fear are gone. The only emotion I feel is an
intense anger and wanting for revenge. I didn't want to write this
and face my true feelings, but I hope honesty will get me through my
anger to feel more sadness and compassion. I wish everyone the best,
and my prayers are with all the victims of this terrible act of war
and cowardice.

Jay Chicoy, senior account manager

I encountered faces of horror, anger, confusion, and sadness as I
walked north through the deafening silence of the streets of New York
City yesterday. If there were one way to describe the sound, it would
be the quiet after a winter storm brings snow to a street, muffling
all noise. "Why did this happen to us?" I overheard one woman say in
tears as I passed a pay phone. There was a long line of four or five
other people desperately waiting to make a similar call to find out
if family members were still alive, just as I had done in my office
seconds after I watched the first story unfold.

Passing hospitals on my long walk and watching medical staff prepare
for a barrage of the critically injured, I couldn't help recalling
the sickening sights of the planes crashing into the towers. All I
could think was that not only New Yorkers, but all of us will be
affected by this horrific event for years to come. We will all know
someone, directly or indirectly, who was there that morning. We will
remember this day forever.

In all my life, I cannot remember a feeling of such helplessness and
sadness. But as I harbor these emotions, I also have positive
thoughts for tomorrow, and how we will get through this. How, with
this tragedy, we will prevail on all levels--physical, spiritual, and
emotional. This day should stand not as our darkest, but as one that
will change us for the better and make us stronger.

My thoughts are with all.

Karim Abay, director of print sales

When I was a kid, my mother used to tell me the story about how she
lost her mother. My mother was born in 1938 in Germany. One day, when
she was 5 years old, my grandmother left her and my aunt in the care
of their nanny. My grandmother gave them both kisses on their
foreheads and left for a friend's wedding. She never returned.

I always cried when I heard that story. I cried because the story
made me think about the possibility of losing my own mother. I cried
because I thought about my mother losing her mother. I cried because
I thought about not having a grandmother to talk to.

My mother always tried to cheer me up by telling me that after she
lost her mother, she was lucky enough to have been cared for by a
group of African-American soldiers who took over and lived in her
home. This army troupe took care of my mother and her sister until
after the war, when they were reunited with their father.

I keep thinking about this story, hoping that New Yorkers will help
care for the many parentless children produced by this 21st century
war.

Amazon Suspends Intifada.com Membership in Affiliate Program

  by Dakota Smith

Amid criticism, Amazon.com has suspended its association with
Palestinian site Intifada.com, dropping it from its
"pay-for-customers" program.

The removal apparently was sparked when Eric Greenberg, founder of
Scient and Viant, sent an indignant letter to Amazon.com last
weekend, questioning the online retailer's business partnership with
Intifada.com.

Although Amazon.com spokesman Bill Curry had initially defended its
Associate Program, the link to Intifada.com is now disabled, while a
sign on Amazon now reads:

"Intifada's Associate relationship with Amazon.com is currently
suspended and under review. We are no longer accepting traffic or
sales generated through their links, and we have asked that all links
from their site to Amazon.com be removed pending the resolution of
our review."

Amazon.com spokesman Bill Curry was out of the office today,
according to his assistant.

Report: NY American Red Cross Needs IT Supplies

The New York chapter of the American Red Cross is calling for
donations of laptops, wireless networking cards, printers, CD
burners, as well as volunteers, including Citrix service engineers
and Microsoft-certified consultants, according to a report in Wired
News.

"The New York American Red Cross is in dire need of technology
equipment and services," Joe Leo, assistant director of the American
Red Cross in New York, told the news site. "The field workers and
rescue sites have little if any means of communication, and the
central office is processing way too much on completely paper
systems. Any help in acquiring these resources would be greatly
appreciated."

The address of the American Red Cross is: 150 Amersterdam Ave., New
York, N.Y. 10023. According to Wired News, only those who wish to
volunteer or donate equipment should contact the American Red
Cross.

Alley Companies Tally Damage

  by Silicon Alley Daily Staff

Workers at New York tech companies are struggling to relocate their
companies physically, while regrouping emotionally.

Steven Miyao and five other employees of e-business consultancy
Kasina escaped their Broadway offices when smoke begin drifting their
way Tuesday morning. Miyao does not know the state of the offices,
located just a block away from the World Trade Center. "We don't know
if there's structural damage, because they haven't given us any
information," he said. For now, he and a few others are working from
home, while they prepare to move into temporary offices at Rising
Tide Studios, the Daily's parent company.

Four-year-old Delaware-based software developer Openworld was in
World Trade Center Tower One; some of its employees are feared dead.
After making a round of calls, Olivier Atta, a close friend of
Openworld CEO Alberto Olympio, who was not injured, tracked down
temporary offices for Openworld on East 36th Street and Second
Avenue.

For Atta, helping his friend relocate is the easy part--for now.

"Short term there is a lot of space, but [finding long-term space] is
a much different scenario," Atta said.

Meanwhile, many of the executives the Daily spoke with expressed a
similar, numb sentiment: wanting to re-establish offices, while
feeling their work and damaged offices are insignificant in light of
the lives lost.

Ben Austin, VP of marketing at Comet Systems, said yesterday his
staff had been unable to get to work for the last two days at their
Spring and Varick offices because of the security measures
restricting the area. This morning, many parts of Soho re-opened.

"I don't know if we will even work when we do get back, or if we'll
just stand around and talk about everything we have seen," Austin
said.

AT&T, based in a large brick building at the foot of the Avenue of
the Americas and inside the sealed-off downtown area, hoped it might
get the go-ahead on Monday to return to its offices, which so far
seem undamaged.

For the past three days, AT&T employees have shown up for work at one
of the telecom's other offices in New Jersey, Long Island, or
upstate, while Manhattan-based workers plugged in their laptops at
home.

AT&T account manager Jessica Liebson said there were a few
frightening moments Tuesday morning as the World Trade towers began
to burn, but for the most part she is grateful to be safe.

"First they told us to evacuate. Then, when we were on the street,
they sent us back in because smoke started blowing up the street,"
Liebson said.

One comparatively bright spot: AT&T's switches in the basement of the
World Trade Center Tower One were somehow unharmed by the blasts, and
only stopped working when the emergency generators ran out of power.
Those switches will be retrieved.

For now, Liebson is more concerned about the office-space needs of
AT&T's customers, although "it's way too soon to tell, because
buildings are still falling."

Market consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, though not based in the
World Trade Center, finds itself office-less four days after the
deadly attacks. The San Jose, Calif.-based company had its sole New
York office on the 13th floor of 90 West St., next to the Trade
towers. The 90 West St. building was severely burned, but remains
intact.

TheStreet.com, WSJ Carry On

  by Jane Roh

Financial news publications TheStreet.com and The Wall Street Journal
are continuing operations while both of their offices remain
inaccessible and the U.S. stock market stays closed.

Employees of TheStreet.com evacuated their office on 14 Wall St. soon
after the attack on the WTC north tower, reported editor in chief
David Morrow in an online column usually reserved for market
analysis. Also, Bill Meehan, a columnist for TheStreet.com and chief
market analyst for Cantor Fitzgerald, is missing, according to
Morrow.

Much of TheStreet.com's production is being handled by its San
Francisco office, with contributions coming in from other
cities while New York staffers work from home, according to Morrow's
letter.

Meanwhile, the nerve center of The Wall Street Journal has been
relocated following Tuesday's events, from the headquarters at 200
Liberty St. to an office in South Brunswick, N.J., in accordance with
an emergency plan formulated well before the attacks occurred. The
Journal learned today that its office building is not structurally
damaged, but the clean-up will take weeks.

As for the newspaper's employees, Dow Jones spokesman Steve Goldstein
said nearly 100 percent of employees have been accounted for and that
the company hasn't received one call from family members seeking
information.

Many of the 800 employees that had been housed in the 200 Liberty
St. building are now working from home, although 100 editorial and
graphics employees have been commuting to the temporary headquarters.
Also, a handful of employees are working out of an existing Dow Jones
office at 1155 Ave. of the Americas.

"Our information technology people in South Brunswick are the heroes
in this--they helped to immediately re-create the newsroom, and moved
all our computer files so we could get out the paper Wednesday
morning," Goldstein said.

He also gave a large amount of credit for the Journal's virtually
uninterrupted production to the wireless device Blackberry, which
enabled reporters and editors to communicate despite crowded
landlines and spotty cellular service.

"Many of our staff members are saying you'll never be able to pry
their Blackberry from them," Goldstein said, but on a more somber
note, acknowledged the emotional toll Tuesday's events had taken on
staffers.

"We were eyewitnesses to the accident, and our reporters and editors
and all the Dow Jones employees saw many people jumping [from the
building] and the plane crash, and have had to suppress that emotion
to get the paper out," Goldstein said.

  by Doug Mintz

With the stock market slated to re-open on Monday, New York Stock
Exchange will be testing the exchange's electronic and computer
systems over the weekend. The Monday opening will also mark the
longest the NYSE has been closed since the outbreak of World War I.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve announced today it has lent a total of
$81 billion worth of funds to banks around the world since Tuesday.
About $6 billion is injected into the banking system on a typical
day. This money serves to meet the demand for funds to complete
transactions and meet commitments from banks around the globe.

"It's there to prevent destabilization and allow trades to settle,"
said a member of UBS PaineWebber's investment strategy team.

At a press conference yesterday, SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt stated he
would today announce steps to ensure what he called "an orderly
market." While he did not disclose details of the plan, he said he
would call on companies to repurchase their own stock, ensuring a
liquid trading market.

Discussion among the investment community this morning also centered
on a restriction of short-selling activity. The UBS PaineWebber
strategist said, "The entire financial community is keen to make sure
there is not panic."

In addition, e-mails have begun circulating urging individuals to
invest in the market in a display of patriotism. On a Southern
California discussion group called GoodTimes, one member wrote: "I'm
buying some stock [Monday]. I have no idea what companies ... but
I'll be damned if these evil bastards are going to put us into a
recession."

Predictions

The FTSE (England's equivalent to the Dow Jones average) traded down
more than 5 percent for the week, while Germany's DAX was down about
11 percent for the week.

According to the UBS PaineWebber strategist, the European markets are
generally waiting for the U.S. market to open in order to follow its
lead. While many speculate that Monday will open with panic selling
by U.S. investors, UBS PaineWebber, in a market commentary released
today, expressed the belief that "it is too soon to say" how the
market will behave after the immediate reaction.

The UBS PaineWebber report, "Assessing the Aftermath," focuses on
three key factors in assessing the direction of the market: consumer
confidence, government policy, and global risk aversion. While the
company expects consumer confidence to be "severely tested" in light
of uncertainties, the report also suggests government policy will
help boost the economy with the Federal Reserve likely to cut
interest rates and government spending likely to increase.

This combination of factors can create an uncertain economic picture.
As a result, UBS PaineWebber and a number of others are calling on
investors not to sell stocks in a panic. And historical data suggests
that panic selling will in fact hurt investors in the long term.

Historical Perspective

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Dow Jones average dipped from
116 to 112 on the day after the attack. It was down to 111 the
following week but back up to 113 a month later. By Dec. 7, 1942, the
Dow Jones stood at 115. A year later it reached 133.

On Nov. 21, 1963, the Dow closed at 732. On Nov. 22, 1963, the day of
President Kennedy's assassination, it dipped to 711--a 3 percent
drop. On Nov. 26, when the market reopened following the
assassination, the Dow climbed back to 743. A week later it stood at
750, and climbed to 758 a month later. By Nov. 23, 1964, the index
reached 889, and rose to 946 on Nov. 22, 1965.

And although stock prices initially dipped after the Iraqi invasion
of Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990, they ultimately rebounded. On Aug. 1,
1990, the Dow closed at 2,899. The following day it closed at 2,864.
After a week, the Dow had plummeted to 2,758, and after a month to
2,613. But a year later the Dow had risen to 3,006. And the following
year it reached 3,395.

While these historical events provide perspective, the UBS Paine
Weber strategist notes that it is "inappropriate to draw definitive
conclusions [from them] ... This situation is entirely different."

From: Mark Bruemmer, CEO

          (tegmarkb@...)

Dear Entrepreneur,

It was brought to my attention that the procedure
for linking your email address, which I use to add
new members to theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo
Groups, to a Yahoo ID is somewhat Byzantine (defined
as: highly complicated, intricate and involved).

I apologize profusely for the hassle you may have
experienced. I want to make it worth your while to
take the steps necessary to access
theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo Groups.

There are many features in Yahoo Groups, such as
accessing the My_Business_Contacts database,
accessing meeting agendas, accessing the group's
member list, having the ability to contribute
documents and links to the group, accessing the
group calendar, etc. which are important to group
communication and helping others to achieve their
business objectives.

So, I've documented the steps that a moderator of
the group takes to add new members to the group as
well as documented the steps that new members must
take to link their email address to a Yahoo ID.

In this documentation, it is NOT necessary for you
to create a new yahoo email account (ie:
emailid@...).

Therefore, I've created a document named, YAHOOID.DOC,
and have posted it on theentrepreneurialgroup site in
the TEG Using Yahoo Groups folder at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup/files/

If you would like me to email this document to you as
an attachment, please email me your request at
tegmarkb@....

In summary, following are the steps documented in
YAHOOID.DOC you must take to link your email
address, the same email address in which you
received this email message, to a Yahoo ID to then
gain access to theentrepreneurialgroup site in Yahoo
Groups:

1) To Sign In to theentrepreneurialgroup group:

Please print these instructions and follow them
carefully. The objective of the initial Sign In
for a new member of the group is to link the
email address you supplied to the group
moderator with a Yahoo ID that you create.
Steps 1a through 1l are for the initial Sign In
     only.

     1a) Please visit:
          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup
A message displayed to the right indicates
you are not recognized as a member of the
          group.

1b) Click on the Conversion Wizard link.

1c) Enter the email address you supplied the
moderator in the entry field [No Password]
          and click the Continue button.

1d) The Authorization Code web page is
          displayed, thereby initiating an email
message with an authorization code being
sent to the email address entered in step
          1c above.

1e) You will receive the Authorization Code
email in your email inbox, at the email
          address supplied in step 1c.

1f) From this email message, get the
authorization code and go to the
Authorization Code web page in step 1d,
enter the authorization code and click on
          the Continue button.

1g) If you have an existing Yahoo ID, then
enter the Yahoo ID and the password and
click on the Sign In button (Go to step
1k). Otherwise, click on the Register For
Yahoo ID Now button (Go to step 1h).

1h) Enter a Yahoo ID, a password, an alternate
email address and complete the Yahoo ID
Registration form. Make the password easy
to remember and write the password down and
keep it in a safe place. Click the Submit
          This Form button.

1i) The Registration Completed web page is
displayed. Click on the Continue to Yahoo
          Groups link.

1j) You will receive a Congratulations web page
indicating that your email address has been
successfully linked to a registered Yahoo
ID. Click on the View My Groups link.

1k) A Yahoo Groups web page is displayed with
all groups associated with the Yahoo ID
          displayed as links. Click on
          theentrepreneurialgroup link.

1l) You will then see the
          theentrepreneurialgroup home page:
          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup.
Now click on one of the many links on the
left hand side, such as Messages, Post,
          Members, Calendar, Files, Polls and
Bookmarks. You are now successfully signed
          in to theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo
          Groups.

Steps for subsequent sign ins follow after a Yahoo ID has
been linked to the email address in step 1c.

     1m) Please visit:
          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup
          Click the Sign In link.

1n) On the Sign In page, you will enter your
Yahoo! ID and supply a password. Then
click on the Sign In button at the bottom
          of the page.

1o) You will then see the
          theentrepreneurialgroup home page:
          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup.
Now click on one of the many links on the
left hand side, such as Messages, Post,
          Members, Calendar, Files, Polls and
Bookmarks. You are now successfully signed
          in to theentrepreneurialgroup in Yahoo
          Groups.

Note: You must always sign in to Yahoo! Groups to
       gain full access to theentrepreneurialgroup
       group services.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank
you for your consideration and continued interest
and participation in The Entrepreneurial Group.

Dear Entrepreneur,

Have you ever thought about how you could help a business associate
succeed, either by resolving their current business need or by
promoting their products and services? Now there's a solution. By
getting your business associate's current business need, a
description of their firm's products and services and their contact
information into the TEG Business Contacts database, you'll provide
them a source for FREE qualified leads and referrals.

The following describes the purpose of TEG, how to join TEG, how
business contact information is entered into the TEG Business Contacts
database and how business referrals are made.

1. What Is TEG?

The Entrepreneurial Group (TEG) meets from 7 to 9 pm on the fourth
Wednesday each month at the Hyde Park United Methodist Church,
1345 Grace Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45208 to discuss
opportunities, challenges and solutions relevant to
entrepreneurship. Participants are individuals who seek to start
a new business, are current business owners or have owned a
business in the past. This forum is an opportunity to network,
identify resources to aid in business development and offer
support and encouragement to fellow entrepreneurs. Topics
include the business plan, corporate structures, government

4. How To Request Information From A Business Associate For The
Purpose Of Adding A New Record To TEG's Business Contacts
     Database.

Requesting information with which to populate the TEG Business
Contacts database may be done verbally in a face to face meeting
or during a telephone conversation. However, to avoid errors in
translation, it may be best to have your business contact write it
themselves and send it to you electronically.

A form, which may easily be added to the bottom of an email
message, is available for you to use for this purpose. The
template form is file name UpdateBC.txt available at:
     http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theentrepreneurialgroup/files/
     TEG%20Business%20Contacts%20Template%20Files/

Before emailing your business associate, include the form,
UpdateBC.txt, into the bottom of your text email message.

When your business associate replies to your message, check to see
if the form is filled out, making sure that all information is
accurate. This is what you'll use to cut and paste into the
column values in the TEG Business Contacts database.

Please understand that the quality of a future referral to your
business contact is a reflection of your ability to accurately
communicate to a TEG group member, the business need, products and
services as specified to you by your business contact.

then your name is entered into both the My_Name_Is and
     My_Contact's_Name column entries.

Please note that there are no edits applied to ensure that all
column values are either filled in or in the correct format. It
