Regardless of the weather, are you being cool? Are you helping others to stay warm?
Being Cool
Joey Cheek, US Olympic speed skater, won a gold medal in
the men's 500 meter speed skating event at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. After winning the event he took a few minutes in the media spotlight to announce that he is donating his US Olympic Committee Operation Gold money of $25,000 to Right To Play, an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play as a tool for the development of children and youth in the most disadvantaged areas of the world. He challenges other athletes, sports enthusiasts and corporate sponsors to match or exceed his contribution.
Staying Warm
“In 1979, [Ewing Marion Kauffman, entrepreneur and founder of the Ewing Marion Kauffman
Foundation] was approached by community leaders about participating in Project Warmth, which was to help people pay their heating bills in that bad winter. Having grown up in tough times [during the Depression], he very quickly agreed to give $50,000. The next year, they came back to ask again. And he said, ‘No, we didn’t solve the problem. The problem is, people still don’t have jobs, so they can’t pay their bills. Instead of taking palliative approaches, what we need to do is help people get jobs and have a sustainable lifestyle.’ And from that time he started focusing on root causes and finding novel solutions to problems.”
Attached is an update from Francine Hardaway, PhD, on programs and resources available through the Kauffman Foundation.
To: stealthmode@yahoogroups.com From: "francine hardaway, phd" <francine@...> Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 22:52:35 -0000 Subject: [stealthmode] Davos -- or Kansas City?
This is quite a week
for travel. The world's economic leaders are at Davos, the cinemaphiles are in Park City, the golfers are in Phoenix, and I am in Kansas City. You may think I'm lost, or at least misplaced, but I'm where I belong -- in discussions of entrepreneurship.
The world's leaders may be talking about what drives the global economy, but so am I.
a long wait, the Kauffman Foundation has released the materials for its program fostering technology entrepreneurship, Fasttrac Tech Venture. True to form, Stealthmode started offering this program while it was still in pilot phase, with photocopied materials and rudimentary preparation. Now I am with a group of other technology supporters in a group to share best practices and get trained on how best to deliver these materials and get the most value out of the national efforts of the Kauffman Foundation. I can't wait to go home and share what I've learned with the beta testers in our pilot
program.
The Foundation has totally re-focused on high growth businesses, and is trying to foster them at every level. For kids, they have developed (with Disney) a game called Hot Shot Business (www.hotshotbusiness.com) that is aimed at introducing young teens to the joys of the business world. If you can read, you can play this on line, starting a pet spa or a landscaping business.
For those of us who lack an inner child to play the game with, Kauffman has launched a new site called EVenturing, collecting resources for entrepreneurs. And then there's the Angel Capital Education Foundation (www.angelcapitaleducation.org) to educate potential angel investors.
But the jewel in the crown is really Fasttrac Tech Venture, the program that prepares would-be technology entrepreneurs for the realities of business. For two days, we've been sitting around discussing how best to deliver to engineers and life science researchers the
realities of starting a company: the chance that you might part company with your co-founder buddies; the day you wake up and find out your independent contractor owns your company's intellectual property; the ramifications of taking outside money from people whose motives you don't understand.
The coolest thing about the new materials is probably the toolkits - everything from dilution calculators to 6-year financial projections, employment agreements, and free access to competitive data and market research. These documents have been prepared by experts and placed online where participants in the programs can see and use them during the course of the program.
Now that this program is generally available, the real test will come: to what extent can the process for starting and growing tech ventures be standardized? If Kauffman's programs take the mystery out of running a business, will they free innovators to concentrate on
their creations or solutions? Will the Foundation's program for tech companies be as successful as its previous two programs in helping businesses grow?
On a grander scale, can this program foster American competitiveness, providing a support system for tech entrepreneurs that replaces the government support of countries like India and China? Will it raise the success rate of tech companies?
Not without the full spectrum of other initiatives -- especially those aimed at instilling the spirit of entrepreneurship in youth and the ones aimed at capital formation. The Foundation has figured out that all these pieces work together, creating an environment that both prepares us for the future and takes our country back to its roots. Face facts: when the first colonists came to America, there were no jobs waiting for them. What powered our economy yesterday will have to power it again tomorrow.

Interactive Session Explores Innovation Methods used at Ethicon Endosurgery
At our December 6 Innovation Forum Drew Boyd will help us (yes, that means you!) apply the unique methods underlying the approach known as Systematic Inventive Thinking (yep, it's related to the "TRIZ" approach) to some actual product innovation problems. We may even pick your company's innovation opportunity for the group to tackle.
If you are charged with improving the innovation process and results within your organization -- this session is for you!
As usual this event comes to you for the ridiculously low cost of $35 for PDMA members and $45 for non- members. If you register before December 2 - - you save $10
If you're attending the chapter event on Decmber 6, or even if you're not, join us afterward across the street from Equistar at the Silver Spring House. 8322 E.Kemper Road for our annual informal Holiday Social.
PDMA National will be e-mailing many of you a survey designed to better understand the perceptions of non-members toward PDMA, the value of PDMA offerings and benefits and improvements that could be made to PDMA.
The survey will take about 10 - 15 minutes to complete.
Often in surveys the questions are more valuable than the results. R&D magazine has sent out it's "Hot Technologies Survey" which lists over 60 R&D technologies that may dominate the R&D landscape in 2006. I'm not sure who is qualified to take such a survey but the list is sure impressive.
The list begins with Anti-bioterrorism devices, Artificial Implants, Automated Surgical Procedures, Automation / Robotics, Battery / Chemical Energy, Bioinformatics, Bluetooth Technologies, Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), Catalysts / Enzymes, Cell Biology, Chromatography -- and at that point stuff gets really complicated.

SIMON COWELL WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU’VE GOT A BRIGHT IDEA WORTH ONE MILLION BUCKS
From flying cars to time machines, America’s favorite critic wants your invention for his new show. Auditions across America start Nov. 14.
Inventors, tinkerers and entrepreneurs of America…
Have you come up with the greatest new product since the Post-It®? How about a floss-dispensing pen, or bubble gum with flavor that lasts forever? Well, Simon Cowell (American Idol) wants your brainchild for his new show, AMERICAN INVENTOR.
Brought to you by the producers of “American Idol” and Simon Cowell’s Syco Television, this new network primetime reality series set to air on ABC will undertake the biggest search ever for America’s best new invention. Open to people of all ages including kids! Casting calls begin November 14th all across America (cities and dates listed below).
Says show creator/executive producer Cowell: “America has always been the mother of invention, from the airplane, rockets, plastic and the internet to flip-flops and soda. This is the ultimate American dream. We want this show to make someone a multi-millionaire.”
With one million dollars at stake, AMERICAN INVENTOR will celebrate the best in homespun American ingenuity. From mothers with a notion for a better baby stroller to experienced engineers with several patented inventions, AMERICAN INVENTOR is open to anyone with a great idea. No invention is too big or small!
Prospective contestants can enter with a sketch, a prototype or even just a concept. The competition is open both to individuals and teams. The invention must be something that can be mass produced and sold to consumers in a retail outlet. Expert judges will narrow down the initial entries to a group of finalists, who will each be given $50,000 dollars to develop their product, refine it, and take it to the next level. But in the end, it will be up to America to call in and vote on which invention is worthy of the one million dollar prize.

Hello!
Getting your business started, whether you plan to make your product yourself or find a licensing partner, can be confusing & time-consuming. Come learn the keys to setting yourself up for success from the start at our November 1 meeting!
Starting this year, new members joining the Council will pay a $10 administrative fee for their first year, making their first year cost $60 versus $50 for renewing members.
Because this is the first year of the new fee, we are extending the renewal deadline from October 15 to November 2.
If you were a member this past year and have not yet renewed your membership, you have a few more days to renew at the $50 rate. After November 2, you will have to join as a new member at the $60 rate for this year.
So be sure to take advantage of this special offer and renew your membership today! We are adding new benefits this year, including: a package of information on all aspects of the invention process, with a flow chart, patenting info, and a 10-page listing of helpful references and links; the chance to have your business plan developed & written by Xavier MBA students; and a discount on an in-depth evaluation of your product.
One of our Members recently took advantage of InventorService's generous discount on product evaluations.
The result? He's seeing dollar signs!
The evaluation, which was extensive, showed the product has big potential — possibly $10 million potential!
For just $100, this Member was able to have experts evaluate his product and give him solid input. Before YOU spend potentially thousands on developing and patenting your product, invest this small amount to be sure your product is worth pursuing. Just visit www.inventorservices.com to submit your product. Note you are a member of the Council and they will confirm your discount.
Join us for dinner before the meeting at Hamburger Mary's, 909 Vine Street, across from the Library. We meet at 5:30. To RSVP, e-mail inventorscouncil@.... Hope to see you there!
The following information is available for Members of the Inventor's Council of Cincinnati: product hunts - with large cash prizes! media opportunities on television and in magazines; company seeking new products; chance to get your product featured by national organization.
Please contact inventorscouncil@... if you are a Member and would like to receive this information. Thank you!

The 2005 Greater Cincinnati Inventor's Fair was a huge success! These products represented a variety of industries, from high-tech to consumer products, with each offering a different type of opportunity for investors.
Please join us Wednesday, September 21 for a special presentation in conjunction with SoundingBoard. Small Business Drives The U.S. Economy
Provides Jobs For Over Half Of The Nation’s Private Workforce
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Small business drives the U.S. economy by providing jobs for over half of the private workforce. Moreover, the latest figures show that small business with fewer than 20 employees increased employment by 853,074 during 2001-2002.
These and other statistics outlining small business’ contribution to the economy are contained in the Small Business Profiles for the States and Territories, 2005 Edition (http://www.sba.gov/advo/research/profiles/) issued today by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
“Small business drives the American economy,” said Dr. Chad Moutray, Chief Economist for the Office of Advocacy. “Main Street provides the jobs and spurs our economic growth. American entrepreneurs are creative and productive, and these numbers prove it.”
Small businesses are job creators. Office of Advocacy funded data and research shows that small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all firms, they create more than half of the private non-farm gross domestic product, and they create 60 to 80 percent of the net new jobs.
In 2004, there were an estimated 23,974,500 businesses in the U.S. Of the 5,683,700 firms with employees, 5,666,600 were small firms (fewer than 500 employees). The latest data also show that in 2002 women owned 6,492,795 firms;
Blacks owned 1,197,988 firms; Hispanics owned 1,574,159 firms; Asians owned 1,105,329 firms; and American Indians and Alaskan Natives owned 206,125 firms.
In 2004, there was strong growth of 7.3 percent in proprietor’s income - a partial measure of small business income. Business bankruptcies decreased by 2.1 percent and self-employment increased by 2.2 percent. This and other data for each state and territory are available in individual economic profiles on the Office of Advocacy website at www.sba.gov/advo/research/profiles.
The Office of Advocacy, the “small business watchdog” of the government, examines the role and status of small business in the economy and independently represents the views of small business to federal agencies, Congress, and the President. It is the source for small business statistics presented in user-friendly formats and it funds research into small business issues.

An unfortunate hacker attack at the end of May 2005 caused a major disruption to the ezboard.com message board service that hosts the TEG Message Board. Despite the loss of a portion of the threaded discussions posted to the TEG Message Board, for now I have decided to continue using the service. Thanks for your patience.

Hello!
Don't forget, our June meeting is next Tuesday! As always, we will have dinner beforehand at Hamburger Mary's. If you'd like to join us, please RSVP to InventorsCouncil@.... Hope to see you next Tuesday!
If you receive an e-mail from a supposed "representative" of a manufacturer in Asia who is overwhelmingly excited about representing your invention, IT IS A SCAM!!! A group from Nigeria that has been targeting unsuspecting Americans for years has developed a scam specifically for inventors. They collect names from websites, then offer huge sums ($25 million, $150 million) for your product. If you contact them, they will ask you for bank account numbers, possibly advances, or other key personal information. IF YOU RECEIVE AN E-MAIL LIKE THIS, DO NOT CONTACT THEM - THIS IS A SCAM!!! The only thing you will gain is a hole in your wallet!
Networking Opportunity: Join us for Dinner!
Before each monthly meeting, we gather for dinner at Hamburger Mary's, 911 Vine Street, for informal networking and discussion. This is a great way to meet our speaker and other inventors, ask questions, and in general meet people in the industry. June Meeting: "Accessing Regional Resources to Advance Your Business Plan"
Please join us Tuesday, June 7 for our monthly meeting at the downtown public library, 8th & Vine Streets, 3rd floor, 7 pm - 8:45 pm. Our speakers will be Drs. Dorothy Air and Chuck Matthews, from the University of Cincinnati's Entrepreneurial Affairs Center.
If you're serious about presenting your product professionally, you'll learn all you need at this meeting. Drs. Air and Matthews will be joining us to describe the "C3" program - Cincinnati Creates Companies. This is a program helping entrepreneurs plan & coordinate their business prior to entering the marketplace, which greatly enhances chance of success. They will discuss the importance of developing a detailed and credible business plan and what investors are looking for, plus explain the resources available to us here in Cincinnati.
