Hints for shimming the PCNC   Message List
Reply Message #3604 of 5542 |
Well my new PCNC arrived and it's time to put it on the stand!

I took some measurements with some flat tool steel of the pads and
found them to be a bit catywumpus. So I shimmed to make the stock
reasonably flat as a starting point.

Are there any suggestions out there to keep the casting from flexing
when then bolts are tightened down?

Where would you measure to determine if it is?
Would it cause the machine table to bow too?
ie, tram would indicate that it's bending?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jim G.

... flexing ... I believe the current recommendation is to just 'hand tighten" the bolts. Their purpose is to just keep the base from moving around on the pads...

A good place to start is to put an indicator on a 4 to 6 inch arm in the spindle and check the table surface. (don't turn it on!!!) You will find that...

I think that shimming the bed must be the last resort, not the first, for correcting a tram error. Tramming the table tells you that the spindle is not...

Since shimming the base takes a few seconds and re-drilling and re- pinning the spindle or unbolting the column are major undertakings I think the best place...

Yup. The pads weren't even close to being coplaner. Placing a piece of ground .75 x 4" O1 across the pads revealed a high-point to low-point discrepancey of...

Or suck up the stand. Try levelling the feet. Alternatively shim between the machine base and the stand with the 20 thou you measured. It's unrealistic to...

As Terry mentioned, you don't want to torque down much more than hand tight on the mounting nuts. I've heard that the mill certification checks are performed...

What happens if you use G00 X0.5 Y0.5 A45.0 It seems to me you will get the max rate for the slowest axis and the other two will move as they have to. Joe in...

Yes, with G0 I will get the max rate but going 65ipm on XY with an 1/8in bit on alu will break bits. Need the XY around 15 to 20ipm and A at around 500 degree...

The best would be to program it with a good CAM software. If you have a decent 3D CAD file, I can try something for you using Mastercam. Yes, when you do...

Yes, remember these are interpolated moves. No need to over think the process. You never specify axis speed in 3 axis contouring, why would you think it...

It will split up the movement between the three axis' and you will wind up with the A axis determining the speed of movement. I will go try it but I think...
