Again, apologies with the lateness of this reply.

It's about time that GO figured out that the bus
platforms should go BESIDE the station, not a five
minute walk away! After walking around Bramalea
station last night in the cold for a couple of hours,
I realized how utterly rediculous the layout of the
station is! If you want to stay warm on a cold night
while waiting for the bus, then you better wait in a
friends car! By the time you see the bus arriving at
the platform, you're too far away to get there in
time!

Anyways, with that off my chest, the next
station...will be Mount Pleasant (well, that's what
I'm calling it anyway :-)), roughly half-way between
Brampton and Georgetown. I can't remember when I said
it was going to open anymore, but I think it's around
the end of this year.

After that, Kennedy station is to open in the spring
of 2002.

It has a map, schedule and info for the next GO
Station, opening January 8. Until April, it will only
have a trailer for ticket purchases and only 200
parking sports, but when finished, it will have a
station building, 300 more spots and a wheelchair
platform. As well, a bus loop will be done.

What is the next GO station to open?

Well, I can answer the first question (I think...).

There have been rumours of GO expanding service on the
Georgetown corridor for a little while now...this is
probably the start of it.

If you read the report on the Transit-Toronto website
about the Georgetown line, there were a couple of
rumours that I had gotten (hey, that's my online name
for a reason! ;-) ), one of which was an extension of
a couple of trains further west to Guelph or beyond.

It looks as if that rumour was correct...although I
still haven't heard anyhing official. If it's true,
than it'll probably start in April, when the new
schedules come out.

Unfortunately, I have no clue about the second
question...any takers?

Question the first:

Someone I met whose house backs onto the GO station at
Georgetown, says that lots of work has been going on
lately, including more tracks and possibly more
platforms.

He claims that these are for GO, who are planning a
service improvment.

Any news, or any ideas as what this work is for?

Second Question:

My school, Mayfield Secondary, just north of Brampton,
usually has 5 or 6 Brampton Transit specials serving
it every morning and afternoon for the Brampton
students.

But tommorow morning, these buses have been cancelled
(just for tommorow morning).

Why is this?

What is happening tommorow that they can't send their
buses?

Thanks,
Christopher Livett

Hi
Yeah. Let's pull all the gov funding, and let the TTC shut down all the
routes outside of the old city of Toronto as well as 80% of the routes in
the core that don't even make money, includeing the Queen Streetcar.

The thing that smaller buses can be used is also weird. You can't use small
buses on most suburban routes, s ince they already carry tons of people,
eventhough they don't make money.

So in short that guy I quess wants everyone to just drive, in the suburbs.
Forget about the 40,000 people that ride the Finch bus, because they live in
the suburbs. I don't agree. The TTC already has a high cost recovery. And
they are always trimming costs now. I don't think they should have to turn a
profit.

In today's rag, the Brampton Guardian, there is a very brief article that
GO is spending $77 Million to improving the track between Union and
Georgetown, Adding a second tunnel to Bramalea, and building the Pleasent
Station. It credits Peter Robertson, our outgoing (thankfully!) mayor for
pushing this infrastructure improvement.

I alos got my copy of Route Map to the Future today. It is glossy,
andcovers each corridor on each page, with ridership statistics and the
like.

Daniel, where do you live?

I have to agree that Bramalea is one of the worst built stations ever. Yes,
the bus loop is far out, and the station serves the train meets, the train
buses the 407 bus, BT Routes 13, 15 and 16 plus express routes A and B and
across the street is BT 11, and the half hourly Yorkdale/York Mills buses.
There should be a waiting room openduring the rest of the day when the
station closes, to serve all the buses in the area. As well, when the 6 45
departure arrives at Bramalea, everyone rushes out, clogging the tunnel.
Hopefully tunnel #2 will ease the pressure.

Brampton, on the other hand is one of the best. It has the station building
adjacent to the tracks, while a wide tunnel connects the platform with the
major BT terminal below with several major routes serving it, also with a
full facility terminal. GO buses, including the Orangeville, Guelph, 410,
27 and Brampton Local plus Greyhound trips. The pedestrian traffic is
diffused from the various parking lots, bus terminal and pathways. However,
the tunnel is not wheelchair acessible.

The way it works, it is almost easier to leave the car at home when riding
the train.

I was at Lansdowne on Wednesday. I took a few pohotos of it, and what is
left of Wade Yard (now it seems to be a daycare playground, but the tell
tale metal poles and the TTC "No tresspasing" sign are still there. I
was shocked to see the back yard empty.

However, if you didn't know already, look at the North side facing
Lansdowne, near the Wallace intersection. You can still see some tracks
in place from when it was a streetcar yard.

I also took photos of Wychwood, as it looks like it won't be there much
longer.

Are there tracks still in place elsewhere that shouldn't be (besides the
Rogers Road installation)?

As I understand it, the changes to the Municipal Act (a.k.a. the "Omnibus
Bill") introduced by Harris & co. allow municipalities to privatize their
transit systems if they so choose. They can privatize virtually any municipal
service, even police and fire departments.

There's a short piece of track which is no longer connected to the streetcar
network located south of Queen St. on one of the side streets near Neville
Park loop. The reasonably well known Hillside Wye located on a side street
off of Lake Shore road is still intact and connected to the streetcar
network but the switches on Lake Shore Rd. that would be used to access it
have been plugged so that it can't be used. There are also several stub
tracks located near streetcar loops which either can't be used due to
plugged switches or missing overhead wire.

In addition to the spots Robert King gave, some would consider Adelaide
street trackage derelict. For sure the westbound trackage is - since it was
made into a one way street in the late 1950s. The e/b track from Spadina
to Charlotte is in constant use and the block from Victoria to Church may
still
be operable, but the section in between is out of commission.

The rest of the two way trackage on one way streets would also fall into the
useless category now. York, Richmond and Church south of King would fall
into that category.

Thank heavens. I used to take the train out to Bramalea station and
catch a ride from there, but switched to Brampton right quick. The
single tunnel's barely enough to allow two people to walk abreast.
People -sprint- for it from the train.

It might also help if they re-timed the lights from the parking lot
onto Steeles while they're at it. The wait to get out of the lot was
ridiculous.

Otherwise, the trip out by train and back by bus is quite nice. We
used to drive out weekly to visit my family - the only thing we used
our car for regularly - until we sold the car, hurrah.

There are a lot of well-thought-out arguments here. There's not much I can
do to disprove anything you say, nor do I have much inclination to.

However, I guess I am belying my training as an urban planner when I say
that there is a strong need for greater long term planning throughout
society in general, not just in southern Ontario. The capitalist free market
system, while the greatest generator of wealth ever constructed in the
history of human civilization, is still very flawed -- particularly in that
it fails to consider its own long term interest and tends to focus on short
term and unsustainable goals.

Though it is probably politically unfeasible, I believe that government
should take a leading role in planning all forms of transportation in this
country. Transportation, in my view, is almost as important as a strong
national education and health care policy, and these three should occupy a
good 60% of the federal government's attention (another 20% would go to
defense). Effectively planned government run policy for transportation, just
like a strong government-run education policy, while contrary to the
principles of democracy and laissez-faire capitalism, is still vital in
building the infrastructure needed to keep the free market system well oiled
and moving smoothly.

Reports last year suggested that congestion on the 401 was costing the North
American economy as much as $5 billion per year in terms of delayed
deliveries alone. This doesn't even begin to include the hidden social and
environmental costs of car emissions, lengthy commuter times and other
associated side effects.

Our society has demanded that government interfere as little as possible. We
want our taxes lowered, so government response in building new highways or
public transit initiatives to reduce congestion on highways, has been
limited. However, business has proven that it is unable to produce the
capital and the will to build these necessary pieces of infrastructure on
their own. The return on the investment is too small and too far in the
future to gain much interest -- even though the consequences of no action
whatsoever is complete economic ruin.

This is a similar case to the old "Tragedy of the Common" analogy. Picture a
plot of land that is open for 10 villagers. It can feed 100 cows. Each
villager initially has 10 cows, and thus the common is sustainable. However,
the villagers' herds grow. To an individual villager, increasing his herd by
one cow reduces the productivity of the common by 1%, but increases his herd
by 10%. So, there is little individual gain in considering the needs of the
common, and plenty individual gain in considering his own needs -- even
though, if all thought like him, the common would soon be reduced to
nothing.

We as individuals see very little individual gain in granting so much power
to our government to enact sweeping transportation or whathaveyou policy.
But in the case of transportation, this is an area where sweeping
governmental powers may be necessary. My only hope is that most people
become aware of this need before it is too late.

On another note, there is no reason why public transportation can not be
funded in a manner more closely associated with costs. I've spoken before
that TTC fares should be raised and lowered according to distance travelled.
But one does not need to turn to private enterprise in order to do this.
There is no reason why a government can not act with at least some business
acumen.
Indeed, there are plenty of Canadian examples of government running
businesses. The policy for answering monopoly situations is a case in point.
Monopolies are intrensically bad to a free market economy, but they are an
almost inevitable outcome within unrestricted capitalism. The socialist
approach to this would be to nationalize the industry. The traditional
Canadian approach, however, would be to nationalize the failed competitor
and run it in competition with the victor. The government formed Canadian
National to go up against Canadian Pacific for this very reason. This is a
case of government intervention, not to shut down the free-market economy,
but to preserve it for the long term.

All the best,
James

If you go to the intersection of Queen and York and look at the special
streetcar track you'll see some neat switches that end and chunks of
switches that shouldn't be there and can't be used given the current
configuration there. The Queen and York intersection is one of the most
interesting ones on the streetcar network due to the missing pieces of
special track and the remaining pieces that were functional turnouts at one
point in time.

The overhead wiring can also get quite contorted at some of these disused
intersections where the wires have been threaded so that the powered wire
passes over top of other wires which would cause a streetcar to dewire if it
tried to make a forbidden movement.

Okay, I assume the different models come in different
versions, i.e. 2 speed, 3 speed, etc., right? How many
speeds does the 730 have in the D90's?

Why would the TTC use 730's, other than the obvious
choice of cost.

Also, are they new, or used/refurbished?

Okay, I assume the different models come in different
versions, i.e. 2 speed, 3 speed, etc., right? How many
speeds does the 730 have in the D90's?

Why would the TTC use 730's, other than the obvious
choice of cost.

Also, are they new, or used/refurbished?

Thanx

Just curious, who is attending tommorow's Christmas PCC streetcar tour?
It leaves Russell/Connaught division at 10:30 and Dundas/Victoria streets at
11:00, the information is on Transit-Toronto
streetcar charter page. There's a chance I will go, provided that it's not too
cold and nothing else comes up before that.

I can't believe this year has went so fast. It seems just about a month ago when
we were ringing in 2000, now we're ringing in 2001.

York between King and Richmond is also now off limits. We couldn't use it on the
October 30th tour because of missing
overhead. It's off limits according to Roncesvalles CIS. I wonder if they will
ever fix it.

Actually, I have yet to see the Route Map to the
Future...could you e-mail me off-line at
smallspy@... and fill me in on it?

I live in the former East York, near O'Connor and St.
Clair...how about you?

Along with Bramalea, I'd like to bitch about some
other stations...Danforth for one...the ticket booth
is small and cramped, and the stairs are risky at best
when it's wet. As well, all of the stations on the
Stouffville line are small, both in platform length
and parking area. There are like 100 spots (or less
even!) at Markham Station!

I have to agree with you about the tunnel at
Bramalea...what were they thinking?!? When I left the
train, there were people standing and waiting in the
shelters on the platform, waiting for the tunnel to
clear out. Should there ever be some sort of emergency
in the tunnel, there is a good chance that people
could get trampled in there.

--- Sean <seanmarshall@...> wrote:

In today's rag, the Brampton Guardian, there is a very
brief article that GO is spending $77 Million to
improving the track between Union and Georgetown,
Adding a second tunnel to Bramalea, and building the
Pleasent Station. It credits Peter Robertson, our
outgoing (thankfully!) mayor for pushing this
infrastructure improvement.

I also got my copy of Route Map to the Future today.
It is glossy, and covers each corridor on each page,
with ridership statistics and the like.

Daniel, where do you live?

I have to agree that Bramalea is one of the worst
built stations ever. Yes, the bus loop is far out, and
the station serves the train meets, the train buses
the 407 bus, BT Routes 13, 15 and 16 plus express
routes A and B and across the street is BT 11, and the
half hourly Yorkdale/York Mills buses. There should be
a waiting room openduring the rest of the day when the
station closes, to serve all the buses in the area. As
well, when the 6 45 departure arrives at Bramalea,
everyone rushes out, clogging the tunnel. Hopefully
tunnel #2 will ease the pressure.

Brampton, on the other hand is one of the best. It has
the station building adjacent to the tracks, while a
wide tunnel connects the platform with the major BT
terminal below with several major routes serving it,
also with a full facility terminal. GO buses,
including the Orangeville, Guelph, 410, 27 and
Brampton Local plus Greyhound trips. The pedestrian
traffic is diffused from the various parking lots, bus
terminal and pathways. However, the tunnel is not
wheelchair acessible.

The way it works, it is almost easier to leave the car
at home when riding the train.

So, let me get this straight...they took out the ZF
4-speed transmissions, and put in Allison 730, which
happen to be 3-speed!?! Um, does this seem odd to
anyone else?

I know that the Allison's are infinately more reliable
than the ZF's, but why not "splurge" and get 4-speed
731's?

While on the topic of reliability, which buses are the
most reliable? Which are the least?

Did the TTC ever consider replacing the ZF tranny's in
the Orion 3 artics?

The Artics never really had a problem, although they were heavier, carried
more weight, and the engine produced more torque. the trans seemed to live.
I believe the Artic cooling system is better and this probably aided the
trans.
A 3 speed is fine for city use and the 731 is a 3 speed as well.

happen to be 3-speed!?!

But you said that the D40LF's use a 731R
transmission...but they have a 5-speed tranmission.

What gives? Is the 731 3-speed only?

The Artics never really had a problem, although they
were heavier, carried more weight, and the engine
produced more torque. the trans seemed to live. I
believe the Artic cooling system is better and this
probably aided the trans. A 3 speed is fine for city
use and the 731 is a 3 speed as well.

Dnforth is being rebuilt already - the tunnel access went in last summer and
they are relocating the station building from the current location as well
as adding pedestrian access from the corner of Danforth and Main instead of
from the bridge. I'm looking for an article I read and if I find it, I'll
post the link - the station will be accessible (ie. hanidcapped) as well as
more convienient in terms of transferring to the TTC.

Danforth station will close for one weekend for construction

Closing from 5 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18
We are closing the Danforth GO station for one weekend to construct a new
passenger tunnel. No trains will stop at Danforth from 5 a.m. this Saturday,
September 16, through 5 a.m. on Monday, September 18.
Passengers should use the Scarborough station instead, which is located
at St. Clair Ave. E. & Midland Ave.
The tunnel construction is part of an overall plan to replace Danforth's
ticket booth and stairs with a station building at platform level, and to
build a pedestrian tunnel and elevators. These changes, along with a
barrier-free walkway from Main St., will make the station
wheelchair-accessible.
Construction should be finished by summer 2001.

I know about it, thanks. I meant that for 30+ years,
the station has been in its current configuration,
which I don't think was, or is, the best way to build
the station. In fact, it can be outright dangerous
when the station is crowded and wet. Although I have
yet to see the new plan, from what I hear of it, it
will be a great improvement.

Hopefully, an underground pedestrian walkway (with
moving walkways?) won't be too far into the future.

Old subway cars could get new home underwater

   December 01, 2000 12:23:28 PM

(Trenton, New Jersey-AP) -- Next stop for hundreds of New York City
subway cars could be Atlantic. Not Atlantic Avenue, the Atlantic
Ocean.

Some 650 obsolete subway cars may find a new home, underwater, as
part of New Jersey's artificial reefs. The state Department of
Environmental Protection is negotiating a deal with the Metropolitan
Transit Authority.

Submerging the cars would save the transit agency as much as 13
million dollars. But some environmentalists are not embracing the
proposal. The executive director of the Clean Ocean Action group
says, "We're going from reef building to an ocean junkyard and ocean
dumping."

But you said that the D40LF's use a 731R
transmission...but they have a 5-speed tranmission.

What gives? Is the 731 3-speed only?

The Artics never really had a problem, although they

believe the Artic cooling system is better and this
probably aided the trans. A 3 speed is fine for city
use and the 731 is a 3 speed as well.

So, let me get this straight...they took out the

While on the topic of reliability, which buses are
