Web Site of the Day: Rebuilding I-235
Interstate 235 serves the Des Moines metropolitan area and this project is expected
to last into 2006.  The rebuilding involves bringing the highway up to current design
standards, widening of sections, redesign of some interchanges and repaving.  On the
site you'll find FAQs, a schedule and several travel options other than driving alone.
A map of the construction area gives you an overview of the project, but an even more
helpful feature allows you to zoom in to smaller segments and then click to get details
of the work in that section.  A separate sections details ITS technology being used
during the project, including traveler information, traffic monitoring and traffic
management and safety.  You can also sign-up to get project updates.

Web Site of the Day: P&O Nedlloyd Fleet Information
Over the years I've featured sites which track buses and aircraft, but this is the first site I've
seen that tracks a mode of transport on a worldwide basis.  When you go to the site you'll
see a map of the world.  On the map are many green icons which represent P&O Nedlloyd
ships.  The global view is quite fascinating, but you can get more detail by zooming in.  By
clicking on an icon you learn the ship's name, its position and average speed.  If you right
click on a ship a menu opens.  Among the choices here is 'history.'  This allows you to see
where the ship has traveled.  The information is not real-time.  It's updated once each day.
The site is powered by PurpleFinder.

Web Site of the Day: Alaska WeatherCams
Flying across the vast wilderness of Alaska can be a challenge, especially during the
winter months.  Accurate weather information is key to a safe flight.  Part of assuring
that safety may be as simple as looking out the window to check conditions.  But
what if that "window" is several hundred miles away?  The Federal Aviation
Administration put together this site to allow pilots to get a view of what may await
them at the airport.  The images come from airports where weather observations are
not available.  The site shows a map of Alaska with airports in places such as Kipnuk,
Bettles and Anaktuvuk Pass noted.  Click on the red dot and you'll see a recent image
displayed.  An archived image from a clear day is also shown to provide perspective.
A map also is available to show where the camera is pointing.

The Trans Texas Corridor was proposed last month by Texas Governor Rick
Perry.  The corridor is a multi-use, statewide transportation corridor which
will include toll roads, high-speed passenger and freight rail, regional freight
and commuter rail, and underground transportation for water, petroleum, gas
and telecommunications.  The Web site is unlike many project Web sites
because it presents information on a project which has not even been designed
yet.  On the site you'll find questions and answers about the corridor, some
conceptual ideas of what the corridor would look like, and a map of where the
corridor could potentially run.

Web Site of the Day: Mineta Transportation Institute - Transportation Links
This site is a good reference page to bookmark on your list of favorites.
The page brings you to a large number of transportation links.  Most
helpful is how the page is organized.  For example, one click will bring
you a list of subject-oriented transportation sites.  If you're looking for
information on school buses, for example, you can find a Web page
that specializes in that topic.  There are other links to Listservs and
news groups as well as other useful topics.

Web Site of the Day: Video Information Highway Trial
The UK's Highways Agency is providing selected still images from video cameras
via the Internet in the hopes of creating a model for a national roll-out.  The genesis
of the project came about when outside organizations asked the Highways Agency
to make it's video available.  Traffic videos were already being provided by some local
agencies and police.  For the trial, freeze-frame images from cameras along motorways
in the Bristol area are being provided online.  On the site you'll see a map of the
roadway network.  After you zoom in you'll find icons indicating where cameras are
located.  Clicking on the icon brings you a recent image from that camera.  In addition,
background information on the project is available.  The trial is expected to continue till
May.

Web Site of the Day: Gateway Guide
This new site is designed to provide traffic information in and around St. Louis.  The
Gateway Guide involves the cooperation of the Missouri and Illinois departments of
transportation, as well as the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council and the
Bi-State Development Agency.  The site is still under development but there already
are some interesting features.  Construction updates are provided for four Missouri
counties and users can sign-up for e-mailed construction bulletins.  For those
unfamiliar with ITS and its elements there's background information and FAQs.
You can get a 180 degree view of the operations center as well.  What lies ahead is even
more interesting.  Features planned in the next 12 to 34 months include real-time traffic
information via the Web and a toll-free phone hotline, direct tie-ins with the media, and
added devices such as sensors, cameras and electronic signs.

Web Site of the Day: National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Services
While I'm sure this is simplifying things too much, AHPS basically
is a service which monitors, alerts and predicts when river or lake
levels are in danger of reaching flood stage.  As you might imagine,
floods have a serious impact on the transportation network and this
Web site provides real-time information from a number of monitoring
stations along rivers and lakes in North Dakota and Minnesota.
Users can view data by either clicking on a map or using pull-down
menus.  For each site current water levels are shown and flood
levels are displayed as well.  For each site you can also view flood
predictions three months in advance.

Web Site of the Day: New York State Canal System
You might think the Erie Canal is just an important piece of transportation
history, but a visit to this site will demonstrate the Erie Canal, along with the
Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals, is still a vibrant part of the
transportation system in New York State.  Today, this 524-mile system serves
recreational users rather than barges loaded with cargo.  On the site you'll find
a map of the system, with each lock noted, marina locations and where fuel is
available.  There are notices to mariners, information on trails that follow parts
of the canal system, and a history of the canals.  For those who long for spring
and the return of pleasure boating, a visit to this site will provide some pleasant
diversions.

Web Site of the Day: North Texas Regional Comprehensive ITS Program
I feel this site is worthy to note because of how it's used to facilitate communication about ITS
information in a region.  The site serves multiple transportation agencies in the Dallas/Fort Worth
area.  On the site is information about upcoming meetings as well as materials from past
gatherings.  An online library is part of the site and it includes ITS information for the North Texas
region.  For agencies which might be planning a similar organization in their area, the memorandum
of understanding which created the program can be read online.

Web Site of the Day: Salt Lake 2002 Official Olympic Transportation Web Site
With the 2002 Winter Olympics set to open Friday in Salt Lake City, transportation
is going to be a major non-sports focus.  This site is designed to bring together the
information you'll need to get around or maybe, better yet, avoid the Olympic venues.
Among the features are current traffic alerts which are prominently displayed on the
page, tips on places to avoid during the Games, and information on park & rides.
Through Utah DOT's CommuterLink, there is access to traffic cameras, incident
information and construction updates.  You can also link to the transit providers to
learn what services they offer.  Utah has done a great job pulling together
transportation information for the games and the site provides convenient one-stop
shopping to get the latest info.

traverses the southern part of the Mountain State.  The site's home page leads off with
the benefits of a toll road such as state-of-the-art emergency response vehicles and
turnpike safety patrols.  In the area of traveler information, the Web site offers a map
of the turnpike, listings of construction projects along the roadway and links to weather
information.  One of the features I like is a critique form which solicits comments on the
highway and its facilities.

Web Site of the Day: I-10 National Freight Study
Interstate 10 stretches across the southern US between California and Florida.  The
eight states I-10 passes through have sponsored this study to gather information about
freight movement, inventory the physical condition of the interstate, identify operational
problems for all motorists on I-10, and determine what improvements can be made to
ease congestion and enhance safety.  The site provides information on the project, news,
and information on how the public may participate.  One of the interesting features is an
interactive map of the corridor.  You can click on a state and get information on I-10 in
that state, as well as a brief listing of airports, ports and rail lines along the corridor.

Web Site of the Day: OET/TEM Transportation Emergency Management
I've often noted in the newsletter how the worlds of emergency management and
transportation operations can overlap.  On this site that's more than just theoretical.
Run by US DOT's Research and Special Programs Administration, the TEM site
gives both background on the program and useful links to other agencies and
related reports.  RESP's Office of Emergency Transportation performs coordinated
crisis management functions for multimodal transportation emergencies.  This
includes everything from natural disasters and terrorist attacks to labor strikes and
technological incidents.  Taking responsibility for this in the field are Regional
Emergency Transportation Coordinators.  Preparedness plans, training, and
coordination with other agencies takes place at the regional level.  More detailed
information is available on the site.

Web Site of the Day: Good Practices for Transit Web Site Design
Putting together the TCN each day I get to see a large number of Web sites.
Some are easy to navigate, others are a mess.  Creating easy to use Web
pages is part art and part science.  For transit agencies looking at either
creating a Web presence or simply planning an update of an existing site,
this Web site is a good place to start.  Put together by consultant Bruce
Schaller, the site lists main elements that make up many transit Web sites
and briefly notes what transit agencies should strive to include.  Most useful,
the site links to existing transit Web sites that exemplify the good practices he
notes.  The site summarizes work Mr. Schaller did for the Transit Cooperative
Research Program on the effective use of transit Web sites.

Web Site of the Day: Grand Rapids Skyview Traffic
Although it's increasingly rare, there are still some independent traffic reporting services
providing updates on the Web and via broadcasts.  One of these is Grand Rapids Skyview
Traffic, serving West Michigan.  While traffic tie-ups may not equal what you'll find in a big
metropolis such as New York or LA, congestion is still an issue and information on delays
is important to drivers.  In addition to the Web site, the company also supplies reports on
a number of radio stations in the area.  On the Web site you'll get a summary of road
conditions.  Links to weather and local news are also provided.

With TRB's annual meeting being held last week, a host of transportation interests gathered to
discuss hundreds of topics covering almost all aspects of transportation.  Much of the work of TRB
takes place in committees.  On this site you'll find links to the homepages of various TRB
committees.  It seems there's a committee for almost every interest.  When you click on the
page for a particular committee you can find different resources.  Most have discussion boards
that you can view.  Others, such as the Committee on Transportation of Hazardous Materials,
have links, papers and contacts you can use.  Even if you're not a member, you can find loads
of useful information on the sites.
