You nailed it man.
As with the slumbering BC group of times gone by,
sometimes it makes more sense to just start fresh.
I've seen a glimpse of the treefort you guys are building, and it looks
like a lot of fun.
So the cubs are gonna have a place to play...
and the Vanbears will have a nice new cave,
that can be moved into and decorated however feels right.
Welcome to an evolution.
M@
Hey all,
As a representative of the 20-something faction of Vancubz, I can safely say
that we're scrapping the name and starting fresh. I'm referring to the
oft-rumoured throwback to the days of 20-something Vancubz, something I never
experienced (Victoria had no bear scene to speak of). However, to be clear, we
have no plans to start a 'club' of any sort. There may be some kind of facebook
page in the future, but it looks to be more like a posse than an organization; a
veritable cubby friendship parade grabbing any 20-something stragglers and
commencing some sort of pansexual feast. You know, something hardcore. Or
something. Either way, there seems to be a 'no grown-ups' mentality to it.
This may be why there are no current organizational plans for the next wave.
With a 'club' setting, the exclusive factor becomes increasingly prominent, and
the last thing we want to do is hurt feelings. There was clearly an experience
in the birth of Vancubz; that elusive spark that seems unique to a group of
young guys getting together and going balls-out-ape-shit-crazy. This also means
hurt feelings, and I have no illusions of the situation being anything but
somewhat segregating. I should know. My partner's 50. Even with that, it's nice
to have something to myself and with people my age. Yes, there is an underground
cub force brewing and stewing and fucking. Yes, we may build a tree fort. No, it
need not limit itself to the 'bear' dynamic, since the BC bear dynamic is
completely fucked anyway. What's happening isn't clear, but we know it's
something we want to do on our own.
Matt is right about the 'resource' element to the old vancubz days. There are
young people who need a base, a sanctuary of good buds around to get through the
coming-out process. It's a good means of being comfortable with yourself and
knowing that there are other guys around your age whose friendship is present
without entering any sort of scene.
With Vancubz, I have no regrets. In starting the podcast, I managed to learn a
lot about broadcast journalism that I've since carried on to new enterprises. I
met a rad bunch of people that shared that experience with me. We formed a
quasi-queenish collective in the process. We had road trips, bar trips,
restaurant trips and mushroom trips. I met men and made some sex. Then they
dumped me. So I did it again. That was neat too. No regrets at all.
Vanbears is a great idea, and there are leagues of possibilities that come from
a fresh slate. There's obviously a base still kicking around. There's a
community that needs each other, and people who will need a community (many who
aren't bears either). If the West End is truly dead, the catalyst lies with the
people. Gosh darnit, Vanbears can save the world.
However, one final stab for my ego: The founder of Vancubz offered me the
ownership of the club some time back, and I accepted with no good plans in mind.
Therefore, I would like the opportunity to deliver the final blow: *Stabs the
fuck out of a Vancubz poster, poster blood sprays everywhere*
There. Now it's dead. Time for us cubs to find some lumber, nails, and a good
tree.

Among the thousands of emails in the last few days, someone commented about the attitude that he has found here (and not just in the "bear community"). I share his thoughts 100%. And believe me, as someone who knows by his experience that the world goes further than Alberta on the East and further than Oregon on the South, I think that comments like "we can't go to a drag queen show because we wouldn't be bears" or "we don't dance because we are bears" do not help at all to bring people and create an enjoyable group.
I'm pretty sure that's the point that everyone should think about (and not discuss through emails) before starting a new club-group-association-whatever. Are we really open? Do we want to know new and different people? Will we leave prejudices
and accept people as they are and not as we want them to be?
I think the ideas for names, web site, parties, events and all the fun stuff should come after having analyzed, personally, what we are up to give and recive.
Have a great weekened everyone. Go out and enjoy the sun.

Well I'm pretty sure we can get the multiple domains to point to the same site, why not just have 10 names for the same group.
<tongueandcheek> I think it should be called Name-A-Bear- Group Group.</tongueandch eek>

As for the BCbears thing, there's a lot of messy past there... towards
the end, the group fell apart, failed *horribly* with an effort at their
bear run (which left a lot of international visitors scrambling and
really let down and ruined the vancouver reputation), and disolved into
a silly mess of sashes and valueless fundraisers. The guys who still own
the name are clutching to the past, and avoiding going anywhere near
that clump of negativity and association would be a wise move for anyone
trying to move forward.

The name BC Bears (which is a "society") is a registered organization with the BC Government. There is a lot of red tape with the name as the registering party is still active. Due to this red tape we would be required to elect a board as well as produce Tax/Income ledgers. VanBears/VanCubz are designed as Member "clubs". We don't charge membership dues or do charitable works in the community (the charitable works could be a possiblity later down the road). Any event that has been previously created or hosted were Member driven but not club really.
And to what I've been reading on the Internet about the BC Bears from news articles their Non-Profit status is still standing with the government and they are still using those domains. I also remember there being some issues with the group from past during the decline of BC Bears which sparked people looking for other avenues/clubs, if Luz remembers this was one reason we tried starting the another Bear Group outside of BC Bears and VanCubz

My vote is for VanBears - again, for the same reasons that were outlined by others before: that a large percentage of us aren't "cubs" anymore, and where it has the inclusion of most everyone, the name isn't so c lose to "BC Bears" that it causes confusion or upset.

Hairy Guy, I'm pretty sure M@ was addressing the group at large. There have
been several posts about what name to use.
I agree with M@ the name isn't the most important thing right this moment, lets
just get something going, if a different name is picked moving stuff over to a
new domain is not going to be the end of the world. Lets just get some
organization going, and less marketing. Most people like to have a product
before they market it ;)

From what I understand, the people who control that group aren't interested in
doing anything with it, are not the same people who are trying to get a group
going here, and they are not willing to let go of the group.

I think it's important that we be taken seriously and not come across to some (the possibility is there; you never know...) to be seen as just some mish-mash "group" thrown together in-spite of vancubz and such. I've thrown my hat into the ring before to be as vital a part of this group as I can be (and will be allowed), so I reiterate that once again. This is something that excites me, so I'm eager to be a part! Feel free to let me know what needs doing!! :o)

I've been busily reading all of the posts, and want to throw my 2cents into the
fountain in hopes that it can assist us in moving from the topic of the name.
My vote is for VanBears - again, for the same reasons that were outlined by
others before: that a large percentage of us aren't "cubs" anymore, and where
it has the inclusion of most everyone, the name isn't so close to "BC Bears"
that it causes confusion or upset.

I also think we can spend the next couple of weeks talking more about big picture things.
For example, what kind of a group do we want to be? How inclusive? etc.
And then, come mid-March, I see us coming together face-to-face, because there's only so much we can accomplish online, and hashing out some of the finer details, like whether we need an umbrella group, and what that would be called, etc.

whos in charge...? :)
i am not trying to be adversarial...please be clear on that! democratik? yes
we can....t? we don't truly live in a world of democratic process do we?
guided democracy maybe but that is a whole other topic for discussion. The
olympics is still on at my last check isn't it?
I think also last check was vancubs(z) had already been popular so stick with it
and let this conversation die...i will retract my thoughts on a need for
provincial inclusion...its not that important to include those that don't come
out and partake on events.
create a vote on to keep the "s" or use the "z".
just my thoughts....

The reason I posted in favour of calling the group VanBears is not
because I want to exclude people from elsewhere in the province, but
because I want to see the group capable of doing the same sorts of
things it did as the Vancubz. If we're talking about going to see a
movie at Metrotown, going downtown to the Pumpjack, meeting up for
dinner in Surrey, or even going to a BBQ somewhere in the valley, we'd
be fooling ourselves if we think we're representing people who live in
Prince George, or Sechelt, or Victoria, or Kelowna; or offering the
same sort of community as we're offering those who live nearby to the
Vancouver area. I have nothing against a province-wide organisation of
some sort, but I think if we're talking about the present group of
grown up cubz doing more of what's happenned in the past... I don't
want to be fooling people into thinking we're something we're not. If
we end up being able to be a cohesive province-wide group, I think
that's great, but it seems impractical to me. A province-wide
organisation... that's something that needs strong leadership... a big
group of people willing to put in the effort of keeping everyone
together and in the loop... funding we don't have.
If that can happen, then that's great, I'd love it... but that's something different than what we started talking about.
Don't misinterpret different opinions as criticisms or attacks.

Most of us--probably all of us--have dealt with what you're dealing with.
Especially when we've emphasized doing things to meet people--the scene, social
groups, what have you. Pursuing interests of yours (besides men, heh heh) and
find others who share those interests is to my mind the best way to make
connections. In the spaces largely defined as places to meet boyfriends or
fuckfriends, the stakes can be too high.
And this is Vancouver. A lot of people pass through here and don't stick
(school, working holidays, or Canadians giving Vancouver a go only to head home
within a year or two). So I think the British reserve combined with a pragmatic
"yeah but will s/he be here in 6 months and how much do I want to extend myself
to 'em if they're leaving anyway" is a reasonable tack.
I moved to Vancouver in 1989. I was 25, partnered, and didn't think much of
myself. I loved Vancouver almost from the get-go, but didn't feel settled for
about 2.5 to 3 years. At which point I got more willing to initiate contact with
guys--most of whom said "I've wanted to talk to before, but I didn't know how to
approach you."
Mostly I started meeting great guys--friends and lovers--after learning how to
2-step, volunteering for an anti-queer violence project, and hanging out with
other guys who, like me, don't drink. Eventually when I did go to Numbers (gawd
that places was OS-SOME) there were so many familiar and friendly faces they
became social spaces more than get-laid-or-married ones. Though that happened
sometimes too whilst there....\
Find likeminded folks who share the same positive interests (what they like
rather than what they dislike) and be patient.

Yesterday had a call from Rick (bcgreybear) and he mentioned calling the new
group BCBearz, kinda vancubz and bcbears put together, reason i think this might
work;
NOTE: i am not here to pick or be picked on by my comments, they are to help
build a bear community that will stay strong and grow at the same time. please
use them for good, not evil. :)
1) use BCBearz as the umbrella, if you use vanbears, surreybears,
whiterockbears, (btw congrats on your new place jonathan!) then some people may
see it as a clicky group as it its named after a city. NOT saying that vancubz
are, ok! some people take my comments and twist them, (i hates that!)
2) people from all over BC can build there community under bcbearz in there city
exp: BCBearz of Kelowna, the webmaster of bcbearz can build a sub page for
kelowna with calendar, blog, etc, and an ambassador from Kelowna who would built
or would like to build a bear community would have admin access and post
updates, events and gatherings so that neighbor cities if they wish to go they
can :) ahh the possibilities!
3) people can host all kinds of events as they please, as long as something
related to bears, cubs, etc... if it ends up as a drag show where everything is
shaved and there is no fat to be seen, well.. its not a bear event. but!... if
its a drag show where you can see more hair and fat then dress.. more power to
ya! :)
4) regarding boards and fundraisers ;
i) Boards (pain in the ass) keep it simple, ambassadors would work i think?
ii) fundraisers http://www.canadahelps.org or https://www.justgive.org note
anywhere that its from BCBearz of (your city)
Hope this puts your brains to work to make a bear community that will work and
keeps on growing with the local cities of BC :)
miss you all!
PS: I went ahead and registered bcbearz.com for 10 bucks. This way people cant
say "its registered trademark or copyrighted" blah blah blah you cant use it.
blah yourself bitches!... its my donation to whatever happens here my friends :)

I must admit that I'm quite disheartened by some of the messages that are being sent out in regard to this thread... firstly, let's try to remember that all feedback is important and will help build something stronger and better. No one's opinion should be criticized or attacked. Secondly, before we send a reply, perhaps we can take a few minutes to consider if it is really constructive or if it may be perceived other than we intended and as a result, possibly discourage someone else from contributing.
Â
Don't forget, there is room for everyone in our group, and there is room for everyone's ideas in our group! Let's build each other up, not tear each other down...

Cheers guys!

My post was more of a rant than anything.
I am having a hard time expressing myself in words and I always have. I didn't mean to come off sounding like an attack or anything of the sort and I'm sorry if I did.
I have lived many different places and I can get extremely frustrated with what I perceive to be the accepted attitude in Vancouver. The attitude I see is one of exclusivity. This attitude is not limited to any one social group, so my focused attention on the bear scene was likely out of place.
I have always imagined that I could be friends with anybody on the planet. This is my personal belief, and it makes me feel contemptuous and remorseful when I experience anything differently. Unfortunately my impression of Vancouver has been that social groups have a hard time allowing new members into their "scene". This has not been limited to any one social group, and because of it I have had a difficult time making good quality new friends since moving back to this city. If it wasn't for the existing friends I had from living here over 10 years ago I honestly don't know how I would have met people.
Do you know how many events I have attended and been completely ignored at? Have you ever experienced that? It sucks and it makes you feel really crappy. I've had people that I knew virtually ignored me, you know one or two word answers, only because they didn't recognize me initially. After they recognized me their attitude changed completely and we had a great conversation. These occasions would really make me angry and sad. They helped me to form ideas for a group that I would like to be a part of.
My vision for a new group, club, organization, scene, or whatever was one of openness and acceptance. I'd like to see something where I could show up at an event and not have to feel like an outsider. Where new people would want to come because they feel that they wouldn't need to be afraid to show up and be ignored.
I'd be interested in doing something not tied to any one existing scene where everybody would be welcome and would feel welcome.
If you're interested in starting something like that or just interested in discussing it let me know.
