I created a new field "UKOCOutreachOutcome" to indicate on a scale of 1 to
5 the outcome of our outreach to various UK oline communities on behalf of
Mornflake cereal http://www.mornflake.com and their online video
competition http://www.mornflakecompetition.com
So far we engaged 38 online communities:
1 5-Embraced
6 4-Responded
13 3-Ignored
5 2-Rejected
13 1-Inaccessible
Beyond this there were a few others that were simply out-of-scope.
By "inaccessible" I mean, for example, that after further effort we
discovered or encountered obstacles that kept us from participating: a
policy that made clear any commercial link was not welcome under any
conditions; a fee for registering; or our registrations were not
processed; or they were rejected; or we posted comments which never were
found, perhaps because they got lost in spam; or the forum was overrun by
spam or abandoned; or contrary to our first impression, there was no real
way to share content.
By "rejected" I mean that our posts were deleted, or we were banned, or we
were prohibited from accessing a thread we participated in, or our links
were delinked, or we were told by the leaders that we were not welcome.
(This can be demoralizing - like being kicked out of a house or having a
door slammed in your face - but we are engaging in good faith and such
responses are to be expected every so often.)
By "ignored" I mean that we were able to make a post, but there was no
response. Typically though we were able to mention Mornflake and post a
link along with our letter.
By "responded" I mean that we struck up a conversation and so we were
included in the community.
By "embraced" I mean that the community made clear that it backs
Mornflake's support for our outreach efforts, is glad to work together
with us and will help us reach out to other communities.
We have only engaged 38 communities and we need to do at least 100. Thank
you especially to Sasha Mrkailo and Jeremy Mason for great work and I also
acknowledge Dennis Kimambo, Thomas Chepaitis, Masimba Biriwasha and our
entire team for our efforts.
Our priority is always to train more people so that our team expands.
Let's draw conclusions from our efforts so far. It's ok to be rejected,
what's important is that we find those communities like Factor E Farm (5
or 10 or 20 of them) that are happy for Mornflake to support our outreach.
That is a great discovery that we seek.
I will also be building online tools so that we can be more helpful in our
engagements. I note that Ricky O'Neill is making great use of Twitter. I
will try to explore Twitter and see how we might get help from those he
twitters with to reach out to their online communities.
I include below more detailed results and also see our report:

for the latest.
