The Oregon Restaurant Association, one of the state's biggest contributors to
legislators, has donated $105,000 to legislative campaigns in the past three
months. Most of that was in a flurry of donations totalling $66,000 at the end
of August, with most of it going to Republicans.
The restaurant association is usually active in trying to maintain lottery
retailers' share of lottery proceeds, opposing taxation proposals, and resisting
regulatory efforts such as smoking bans.
Although Democrats control the Oregon House and Senate, the association has
traditionally been a strong Republican supporter. The group reported that a
total of $80,700, or 77 percent, of its money in June, July and August went to
Republicans, while $24,300 went to Democrats.
The biggest recipients included the House Republicans' caucus PAC, $10,400; Rep.
Linda Flores, R-Clackamas, $7,500; House Minority Leader Bruce Hanna,
R-Roseburg, $5,500; and Rep. Scott Bruun, R-West Linn, and Republican Senate
candidate Chris Telfer of Bend, $5,000 each.
Watch for more money to come. After the association reported making $66,000 in
donations on Aug. 28, it still has $144,000 in the bank
