Bumper pull can also refer to towing with a chassis receiver hitch as you said
in you message. For the W33's trailer that we tow it is on a extra heavy duty
class 5 chassis receiver rated at 17,000 lbs. There are one that go even higher
in rating but for an RV type tow over 18,000, like a boat, I would highly
recommend a "fifth wheel" in the bed over the rear axle.

a W27. You need a chassis class three trailer hitch. If a bumper pull is
something else, I do not know what it is and would appreciate it if you could
describe what it is. I use to tow a W23 all around the Southeast. It did not
have trailer brakes. Anything larger I would not tow without trailer brakes.
Alan Wilson tows a W33 and should be able to provide some good information.
Also, John Myers tows a W25 all over the country and is a great source of
information.

Marilynne, it's been some time since I redid my old W27.
The short answer to your question is yes, one of the blocks has to attach/bolt
down inside the boom. That allows the other block, the one with the steel cable
attached to it, to move back and forth. For clarification purposes, the
unsecured block will only pull into the boom up to the point where either it
runs out of scope (the two blocks literally come together, or the fitting at the
end of the steel cable comes up short against the aft end of the boom. You have
to manually pull the cable towards the end of the boat to get scope back into
the system. I believe that on my old boat the through bolt used to hold the
bail on to the boom is also used to hold the stationary block in place. If you
do not have a bail on the underside of your boom, there should still be a bolt
going through. I would then cleat off the line to a small cleat on the
underside of the boom up near the gooseneck.
Hope this helps. If you want you can contact me off line at lapoints at
Bellsouth dot net.

Hi there! Need some help in assembly of my boom. Help !
We were having some problems setting and maintaining outhaul tension on our
Watkins 27.
I noticed that when we adjusted any other lines that ran thru the boom we
would lose outhaul tension again .
After getting a feeling that it may be tangled inside we jerked the lines
back`n'forth till it felt loose ,then OOps! All this scthuff fell out of the end
of the boom.
Does anyone know where it was connected inside the boom?We suspect that it
must hook up somewhere inside near the mast end.
Does it hook to another line? or some fitting inside.
pulleys with steel cable attached(to outhaul on
sail) Mast end of boom ,possible anchor points ?
I have taken pictures which I can email you or can add to my watkins photos on
this site. Hope someone can help
Thanks and Hope everyone is doing great! Rainbowmoon Marilynne Heather

Thanks to all. If I didn't have something like these little projects to
work on I'd go stir crazy. Since this is sort of a new boat to me it helps
me learn every inch of her hull and hardware. That gives me confidence that
all will work well if I get into a jam. Thanks Again, RJ W

From what I have learned about polycarbonate it is not so much chemicals
that clear it up as abrasives. This is the same stuff that is used for
bullet proof glass so the industry is used to UV rays slowly fogging and
weakening the material. Since we aren't concerned about stopping bullets the
mild abrasives to "sand" the fogged surface and then clean it very
thoroughly is supposed to get it clear again. However if you have a lot of
what look like cracks through the material you will not get it clear again.
Such as my main companionway hatch which is not only all cracked looking but
is a whole variety of colors from clear to black when it should be dark
tint. So I have to fix it! That's why we love our sailboats, the work is
therapeutic, educational and fun usually!

The work is definitely therapeutic. I look forward to winter projects almost as
much as I look forward to summer sailing.

Levi,

Welcome aboard!

As keeper of the Watkins Yachts boat registry, I would like to add you/your
boat to the database. Could you tell me the former owner and boat name so I
can remove them and put you in their place? I have several W27's in
Virginia and do not know which one if any is your boat.

Hello all, another newbie rears his recently waterlogged (watkinslogged?)
head...

I have been stalking this group obsessively since August, and the purchase of
my '79 W27.

Sorry for the delay in a "formal' introduction. I did chime in once to ask
about buying a cockpit table that "Wildest Dream Jim" and Paul Lapointe had
offered up.

Jim, please forgive me, I have only a few brain cells left - it's seems the
only thing I can really remember is "get beer"- and I have forgotten your last

Jim and I emailed a bit and spoke on the phone a few times, and the next thing
I know, I hear two gentlemen talking in the marina parking lot, and my name was
mentioned.

Turns out, it was Jim and Paul, toting the cockpit table, and a piece of trim
for the head doorway!

Then, I see Paul in a cap from the Jackman Trading Post. A place on the same
lake in Maine that I have spent every chance I had, every summer of my life, so
right away, he was ok by me!

When we hit the boat, they gave her a good once over (finding the diesel

boats, things they'd done that I might use on my boat, tales of raft-ups and the
group, thoughts on what I would need to do to my new love, and even offers to

All with a very obvious love for these boats, and showing in-person the
collective personality I've seen from this group.

The affection and loyalty that you all have for Watkins boats has given me a
lot of confidence in what my boat is, and what I'll be able to do with her.

ok... enough of that sappiness... the story... already in progress...

I use Meguiar's #17 cleaner and #10 polish. I have had good results. For ports
as bad as yours it may take repeated applications to get the best results.

I only recommended acetone was for things like the white plastic combing
boxes and speaker grills. The acetone literally melts the plastic and you
wipe away the outer surface. I have no idea what would happen on the clear
windows.

I have purchased one of the Headlight lens polishing kits from Harbor
Freight and also a polycarbonate polishing kit for removing scratches from
windows. Stay tuned for results. This is another rainy day project for me.

Jim,
There is an entire section of the website photo album dedicated to the W25
trailer. Sorry but trailers are pretty much custom made for the boat to be
carried. I have radically altered my trailer as you can see from the photos
on the website to make it easy to launch. When I got the boat, the first
time I tried to launch it, the boat would not float off. This was a very
steep ramp which had worked for other sail boats I had owned. I welded up a
13' tongue extension which worked fine for a few years until I found ramps
that were only 5' deep no matter how far you backed down. This is typical
of lakes (not reservoirs) or ocean in (Florida) where there is little
variation in water level. With the modification I made to the trailer I can
now launch on about any ramp without getting my feet wet!

Towing: I have towed my W25 to the Chesapeake 3 times and to Canada to the
North Channel 3 times. Also I have towed the boat many times to Lake Huron
(Michigan side), a mere 365 miles one way. It takes a big HEAVY tow vehicle
with a long wheel base. Think Buba truck 3/4 ton 4 door crew cab pickup,
Chevy Suburban or Ford Excursion. The reason for the crew cab is you need
weight and the vehicle to be long.... I tried a full size 3/4 ton Chevy
custom van for a few years. It was strictly white knuckles all the way.
The suspension was too soft and the vehicle was not heavy enough. I now use
a Chevy Suburban 3/4 ton with 1 ton springs and a 454 engine, the truck also
is a 4x4. Now I forget the boat is back there! Surly I am preaching to the
choir, for a guy in Texas where a Suburban is a Cowboy's Cadillac! P.S. The
boat weights about 1,000 Lbs. more than the brochure weight. Technically
you need a 10,000 Lb. trailer as the boat weights about 6,500 Lbs. so a
7,000 lb. trailer is too light since the gross weight includes the weight of
the trailer it's self. Thus you need either two 5,000 lb. axles or 3 3,500
lb. axles.

TO ALL:
The 2009 Watkins Raft-Up Photo Album has finally arrived on the website.
IE www.watkinsowners.com click on Photo Albums on the left side.

With my boat in dry storage for the winter and a spell of cold rain for 4
days straight I finally got enough indoor time to work on the website.

Note: The PDF file in the 2009 photo album loads slow so be patient.
This year I took the liberty of deleting some duplicate or nearly duplicate
photos.

Enjoy!

Hi there! Need some help in assembly of my boom. Help !
We were having some problems setting and maintaining outhaul tension on our
Watkins 27.
I noticed that when we adjusted any other lines that ran thru the boom we would
lose outhaul tension again .
After getting a feeling that it may be tangled inside we jerked the lines
back`n'forth till it felt loose ,then OOps! All this scthuff fell out of the
end of the boom.
Does anyone know where it was connected inside the boom?We suspect that it must
hook up somewhere inside near the mast end.
Does it hook to another line? or some fitting inside.
pulleys with steel cable attached(to outhaul on
sail) Mast end of boom ,possible anchor points ?
I have taken pictures which I can email you or can add to my watkins photos on
this site. Hope someone can help
Thanks and Hope everyone is doing great! Rainbowmoon Marilynne Heather

I used acetone on a mostly ruined polycarbonate window in my old drop boards
once - the window was completely fogged anyway, so I had nothing to lose.

Good thing I wasn't trying to wipe off a smudge, because the acetone proved to
be a solvent for polycarbonate. I just got more profound smearing, and the
surface was obviously "melted" to some degree after applying a saturated rag to
it.

I would stay away from acetone as a cleaner of "clear" plastic.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the nice welcome note.
No, my hull is white with dark blue
stripes on the top and bottom.

By the way, I am looking for a trailer.
Could you point me in the right direction
for information about trailers for sale
and trailer design for a Watkins 25?
Have you ever pulled one on a trailer?

Also, if anyone would ever like to charter
a Watkins 25 in the Florida Keys, one is at

at a reasonable price. I have chartered it twice
and had a great time both weeks.

Thank you,

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the nice welcome note.
The site has been very helpful
already. Lots of good information.

By the way, I am looking for a trailer.
Could you point me in the right direction
for information about trailers for sale
and trailer design for a Watkins 25?

Thank you,

Jim

James,
Welcome aboard. It seems like our loyal 25 foot owners are coming out of the
wood work. I remember seeing a W 25 in New Jersey that had a light blue hull.
Just checking to see if the last hull was light blue.

Welcome aboard Darrell,

I also have a W25 which I have owned since 1994. Besides this message
board there is also a Watkins website - www.watkinsowners.com
<http://www.watkinsowners.com/> . You will find lots of W25 information
there such as photos, brochures, magazine advertisements, spare parts lists,
where to find new and used parts, how to projects like building a mast
crane, etc.

I also have a personal section for my boating vacation photos with more to
be added soon @ www.watkinsowners.com/yknot

Welcome aboard, Jim. This is a great community of sailors. One of the cool
aspects of this site is the access you have to old posts. You can get to know
everyone by reading through some of the 18,000-plus posts that have been made
since the group began about 10 years ago.

We're looking forward to getting to know you better!
