Rain is great, and remember it is wind and water we sail on and rain only makes
it slick!
I am so happy for you. Maybe next weekend I can get up there for a day.

Please do, if you can. Giving training classes at the RR in the AM
then plan on sailing in the afternoon. If not this weekend, just
hollar. You know where we live!

I would check the current draw of the coffee pot fist. It should be written
on the pot somewhere. #14 AWG is good for about 15 amperes.
The lighter plugs on my boat are wired direct to the main power switch
through a fuse panel (No switch) mounted to the bulkhead behind the Power
switch. It is accessible through the seat hatch in the cockpit.
Other things wired this way include the Auto Pilot and Refrigerator.

Subject: [watkins] 12 Volt Wiring

Hello,

So, here is what happened.... I have a 12 volt receptacle plug mounted in
the galley, that must have been installed by one of the previous owners. I

plugged in a coffee maker into it. I smelled burning plastic and when I
unplugged the coffee maker, the adapter plus the receptacle outlet plug
itself was
melted!!! I am thinking the next step could have been boat-on-fire. It
is
wired into the "cabin lights" switch on the control panel. The fuse never
blew. The wire that was used to hook this whole thing up is 14 AWG. I
have
since purchased a new receptacle outlet and installed it using the old
wiring
but new connectors. One of the guys on the dock said he thought the
problem
was with the old connectors. I am not so sure about this. I am wondering
if the wiring is too small. If I want to plug in something like a coffee
pot,
should the wiring be connected directly to the battery with its own in-line

fuse? If so, what do recommend? (that is aside from using the stove or
buying coffee at Dunkin donuts before getting onto the boat.)
Thanks!
Susan

I would be happy to put stuff like this on the Watkins Owners web site as
long as it is legal. If you get someone to scan a manual, I can convert to
an Adobe PDF which drastically shrinks the size and works well for printing.

Coffee Drinkers,

Heating element (12 volt coffee pot) amperage on a DC circuit doesn't
seem to be the most efficient way to make coffee on board. Not only
that, but if it takes that long to make coffee, you will have leached
all the bad flavor, as well as the good, into your coffee cup by the
time you've finished. There are other options which make as good, or
much better coffee... They all involve your on-board stove top,
though.

1. French Press - all you need is hot water, a french press, and
ground coffee. Fantastic taste.

2. Mileta filters - Just pour hot water into the filter basket - one
time through - for some of the best coffee you can make at home (or
on the boat).

3. Stove-top espresso - this is the absolute best, and they are
available for CHEAP (especially online) - the stainless steel variety
are the best tasting, though the cast aluminum works well also. Two
shots of espresso in 6-8 ounces of hot water makes the best
tasting "American" strength coffee you've ever tasted. One six-cup
(that's demitoss cups) batch into a one-quart thermos, then filled
with hot water is the perfect amount of coffee to espresso ratio.

4. You can still get the old-fashioned stove top percolators
(aluminum, enamelware, or stainless) in a variety of sizes -
especially at camping/outdoor shops. These make fine coffee if you
don't let it perk so long that it becomes bitter.

Try it - you'll like it! 10 minutes to wait for a much better cup of
coffee.

I was intrigued by the name of your boat. Are you a current or former windjammer

You probably know where they all are but I had a devil of a time finding sites
that would let you listen to "Reuben Ranzo".

Some of them are:

10 minutes to wait for a much better cup of
coffee.

Hi Everyone;

Just wondering if there will be any more photos heading my way to
assemble a photo CD album of the event? I have only received pictures
from two others
Lastly I've been trying to find "clipart" or a drawing of the
Chesapeake Bay to be used on the back of the T- shirts. My dail up
internet service makes searching for this very slow and truthfully
nonproductive. If anyone has the time (or speed) to find a useful
picture please share what you find. Terry

When I got my Watkins I realized that I have a lot of things in common with
ole Reuben. I was a lubber and only took to the sea later in life. I also
seem to have a propensity to fall into situations that I don't know anything
about and get into trouble but somehow always survive. My present wife was
the boss's daughter. Finally, I used to sing Reuben Ranzo to my two
daughters when they were little as a lullaby. So it seemed appropriate to
name my boat after the shanty.

Great story.

I really like reading about the Raft-Up, and everyone's struggles to keep their
pride and joy ship-shape, but I also like to hear the personal anecdotes folks
might be willing to share.

My only experience with sea shanties was during the time I was a new member of
the La Nina crew in the Corpus Christi Columbus fleet. We used some that our
Spanish instructor taught us. I grew up on and around boats but not shanties -
commercial craft no longer use them for obvious reasons; you just push a button
and the winch, windlass or capstan does all of the hard work.

Thanks for sharing.

Where have you guys mounted yours? I am going to put it inside the

if the transducer line will be ling enough.

I'll sit back and wait for responses. Thanks a million, guys! Wish I
could go to the boat right now, but it's too early. the dog woke me up
to go pee, he has fleas, and I have to go to work on the railroad in a

That location sounds good to me. Use the oil if you like, but just sticking it
in a big blob of silicone (with no air bubbles) will work fine.

Are you-all using through-hull transducers or transom mount ones? West Marine
told me to use a transom mount one, but it doesn't seem to work well through the
hull.

I cut an access hole and mounted an access port just between the two access
doors on each side of the V-berth. I mounted the transducer there in silicone
and am happy with the results. That placed it slightly ahead of the keel but
not up on the curve of the bow. The line was long enough to run back to the
wheel where I mounted the head unit.

For years I have had a puck style transducer in my W-27. It was
manufactured by Uniden and I tried to contact the Unident people for advice
on installing but couldn't. I did talk so some guy in West Marine's
customer service who had installed one in his boat. He told me that the
puck doesn't have to be perfectly flat and can be on a slight angle. Oc
cource you don't want to mount it over the keel. I mounted mine beside the
engine oposite the raw water intake. I used an epoxy paste (it was grey
when mixed but don't remember where I got it). I made sure the transducer
was pushed down into a good puddle of it so there were no air bubles. I
secured it with duct tape (what else?) until it cured. It has worked fine
since.

Yesterday with the help of a friend who is probably one of the best
marine mechanics on the Chesapeake area we installed a new water
pump Racor filter new belts filters, new air silenrcer and backing
plate on my new Watkins 33. He has shown me where and how to service
her for the future. We both agree that cutting an access port
through the counter top behind the ladder would be the smart thing
for future repairs. I have seen pictures of this access port on the
net and have received dimensions from another W33 owner. DOES ANY
ONE HAVE CLOSE UP PICTURES OF THEIR ACCESS COVERS ON A W33

Next week she goes on the hard for rudder repair or replacement,
cock pit sole repair, complete bottom job, tabbing of bulk head,
repairs to just about all the plumbing, repair or replacement of
depth sounder. lighting. I will be doing the work myself and welcome
any and all advise pictures suggestions and counsel for example
anyone know where there may be parts for a DS-1 Depth sounder. I
will try to take pictures along the process and maybe this will help
another owner in the future! The best ideas I've found always come
from fellow owners (this is my 3rd boat)!!!

The goal is to make her back to a pristene condition as possible and
make next years raft up
