gosh, who'd have thunk that a oil company owning president (who was elected
by the supreme court) from an oil family, would want to go to war with the
richest oil producing region in the world???!! i'm getting back at the
bastards (you can pick which one(s) i mean) by driving a fuel efficient auto
(40mpg). i'll get back at the other bastard(s) in november or 2004.

Good for you Phil! I have not gone as far as you but 2 months ago, I
traded my SUV for a Matrix. I can still fit a surfboard in the car and
my pooch can ride in the back.

So far, I have recorded up to 30.5 MPG, easier on my wallet and the
environment.

Dear George
I'M considering selling my 80 W27. Its in the Middle River area MD
(Baltimore). Upfront, the Renault diesel engine have a starting problem. It
takes 1-3 minutes of starter time to jump the engine. Otherwise, very clean
boat.
Sincerely
Gaby

Easy with a crane. Use giant wire ties to secure all the rigging. Duct tape is a
mess to get off.

Luke,
Don't forget to place some support under the middle of the mast during
transportation and storage. I had a crane come and unstep mine for the trip
from the hard to ocean . We added some blocking to support the middle
section, the ends were supported by the bow pulpit and the stern railing.

W27 requires an oversize permit because of the 10 ft beam. Anything over
8'6" requires a permit. I had my trailer made 8'6' to get all the stability
I could. Ever drop an egg on concrete? 13'6" is the max height. After that
it gets real interesting. Depending on the trailer you might not be able to
put the mast on the boat. "You" should measure it personally. My trailer
has drop axles. We stow the masts on the trailer. Makes it easier to work on
the boat, get in and out and allows you to work on the mast. Be sure and
"read" the markings on overpasses. The are even sometimes right! I saw one
mast, somebody else was hauling that was real flat on the pointy end! Small
town stop lights, I say stop lights cause they are usually red, installed by
some bubba may or may not be high enough, dodge um! Watch for phone lines
and cable tv lines, they are the ones on the bottom and sag a lot. We even
have had to trim limbs getting up the mountain roads in Arkansas to the
lakes. Then there are those signs and power poles right on the curb where
they made four lanes out of a two lane road. Can't run the right lane,
overhang! Yea it's way up high but lookout! Be sure and set the keel on some
4 x 6 beams so you can get the travel lift straps out from under the keel.
Get "all" the weight on the keel, "then" screw the pads up to touch the
hull. Watkins are tough but lets not test the hull! Notify "your" insurance
company and make sure they will verbally or in writing extend coverage while
hauling. Boat US is glad for you to tell them and give you a few days, then
tell them it survived. Oh, and permitted loads have to "stop" at weigh
stations. They usually wave you around the scale and you have to go in and
show the permit. A flashing orange light is required but you don't need an
escort vehicle. You can start out 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes
after sunset you better be somewhere to stop.
Have fun, and oh yea GO SALIN

Hello all,
The battery installation on my 79 W27 is less than ideal. There is
insufficient room for the batteries and their plastic cases. I'm wondering
if the boat came like this, or if it was someone's brilliant modification.
Anyway, they are currently squeezed in the starboard cockpit locker,
forward, between the engine compartment and a shelf. My W27 has a slight
starboard list, so I was also wondering if anyone has the batteries on the
port side somewhere. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's best to remove the wood panels, nail the flange to the edge of the wood
then reinstall, however I've also had projects where I was only able to
force the flange into the space between the wood and the fiberglass. If
possible apply a small bead of water proof glue to the flange edge first.

The two batteries on my 78 W27 are in the starboard cockpit locker, side by
side, near the forward end. Both have plastic boxes, and fit fine. They're
down deep and hard to reach from the cockpit, but fortunately that isn't
necessary too often. I don't have a shelf in that locker, maybe that's the
difference.

Depends on how far you are going and how much deadheading is involved.
Permits, depending on how many states are involved can be from $12 to $60
dollars and about $2.50 to $3.00 a loaded mile. That's for a sailor to haul
it, not a freight truck driver.
$50 to $60 dollars an hour for unstepping mast and loading/securing. A crane
to take down the mast is from $75 to $125 and hour. Usually takes an hour.
If you are using a travel lift that is usually about $125 and they give you
some yard time. One important note is to have a trailer that will take a
shoal draft boat. Meaning one with pads that will drop far enough so that
the weight is on the keel not the pads and hull.
Where you going?? To a raft up??

Cocoa Beach to Seattle in the spring of 1994. 4000 for the trip and
about 1500 split between the two ends to get it ready for transport and
to get back in the water.

My 84 W27 came with a shelf in the starboard locker. I have three 27 series
Gel Cells in a plexiglass box I built. I also have two in the quarter berth
port side, down in that first locker on their side one behind the other.
These make for short runs to the starter. I use the three for house or yacht
I guess, and the other for starting so all my electronics don't fry when the
starter pulls mega amps. Of course you can combine all with a switch if
needed. Gel Cells don't leak and don't give off hydrogen gas when charging.
Remember the Hindenburg! The new AGM absorbed glass mat batteries are small
and have more power with better life and are not as sensitive to being
overcharged or charged at too high a voltage, but then you should be using a
3 step marine charger, regulated to about 13.8 volts that shuts completly
off, not trickle, and not an Auto Zone special ferroresonant humming, 16
volt Jim Dandy battery cooker that arcs and sparks when the contacts connect
which well, you know the rest of the story.......

About three years ago, my esteemed brother in law, Brian, arranged to have
Wendor moved from
Ithaca, NY to Warwick, RI, about 350 miles. I believe it cost around $900 - BUT,
we were able
to let the boat transportation company move her on their schedule, so it was
less expensive
than a specific schedule. Top rate boat movers, too.

Brian is part of this group, so maybe he can add some details!

Luke,
I purchased Quadrille our 82 W27 in Clinton Mass. The former owner was
helpful in connecting me with Pecks Boats who had placed her on the hard in
Clinton. They came up put the trailer under the boat, removed the stands
and towed her about 140 miles. Put her into the water and raised the mast
and set the rigging. All in all it was about a 576.00 day. It actually
was a tad bit more but that was because I had them do some extra things to
the mast and spreaders. They did a fine job and I am indebted to the
previous for hooking me up with them. I am not sure where you are in
realtion to them. However, there are several sites that you can find where
you can enter origination/destination and you will get email quotes from
various hauling companies. Look for them in google search engines.

I have seen those trailers. If you did not use a travel lift how did you get it
out of the water and back in? They did not submerge that trailer did they? Where
do you find a ramp long enough and deep enough to flood launch and retrieve on
that coast? Or did you just move it from the hard in one place and unload on the
hard in another?
We dont have the luxury of travel lifts here in Ark on the lakes. The Corp will
not allow that kind of development, but they will take our tax dollars! My
trailer has a front axle way up by the gooseneck and we put two spares on and
hook up a couple of 30 foot 4inch wide tow straps and let the whole mess in the
water. Even for a Watkins its a long way down the ramp to get enough water.
There is a photo of this in files on the Wakins site. I don't have a picture of
a Watkins on it yet. I modified a trailer I borrowed to haul mine. Then I had
this one made, kinda the better mouse trap. When I get one on there I can
measure all the set up and maybe that will help those wanting a cradle. However
jack stands work well too and are easier to store. Brownell has those.

Well, after three weeks of cleaning, work, and chores, Johnnie and I
finally made it to the boat. The minute we got to the boat it started
raining! Man......
So we took a two hour nap, made coffee, and I starred at the 1 gallon
porta-potti while the rain came down.

Now, a question for someone: what type of heat should I use for the
cabin? We are planning on sailing year-round, unless you guys think it
would be better for the boat to get it out and store it during the
hard winter months in Atlanta, so what is the best? (alcohol,
electric (I have a 1000 watt portable Honda generator), propane, etc?
We are going to participate in a race on January 1st, so I would like
to keep the boat in the water until then, and would like to spend some
nights on the boat, maybe even in a sonw-storm, if we get any snow
this year. After that, we were going to bring it home for
January/February work for the raft-up (new wood for the transom and
replace chain-plate), but it sure is nice to just go to the dock and
sit there, that is if the weather is too bad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, about the heater or anything else!?

Thanks, and I sure am glad that I can pull my boat with a 6 cylinder
ford Windstar, and don't have to hire a "big rig." Maybe the small
potti isn't so bad after all! See you guys in VA.

Hello to you,

It is very roomy for a 23, I guess. Only has 5' of head room, though.
We sleep 6 (2 adults and 4 kids) on it, and can also sail with that
many (more if we really want to - kids play video games in the cabin and
don't seem to get sea sick!). We have a swing keel, and displacement is
around 3000 pounds. 25' foot mast, and as I have mentioned in other
postings, a porta-potti. I really like the layout of the 25. Paul
LaPointe, the former owner of my boat "Jolly Roger," has the dimensions
on the Watkins page. I have some pictures in the picture section, also.
  Thanks for the note.

My 78 W27 was stored in the past on 5 jack stands with a level keel.

When I took a look at it after was positioned for this winter, I found
support with a height of 1 4 by 4 on the back of the keel. The bow is
slanted up by about 4 inches, since there are is support with height of 2 4
by 4's at the front of the end of the bow. There are also now 6 jack stands
on it - with the extra charge.

Does anyone have a clue as to why this would be done - slanting the boat and
what the effects are on the boat and mast?

Am calling them today to find out why it was done and am going to ask them
to straighten it and put it on 5 jack stands.

Mine(2) are located in the same spot. Though I do not have a shelf. Plenty
of room for the 2. 1978 W27.

Conrad and Johnnie,
I recently purchased a Coleman heater that is 3000BTU it runs
about 8 hours on one of the disposable cylinders. It has a small fan
in it that runs on two D cell batteries. The fan is suppose to last
about 18 hours of continuous running on the batteries. I have not
run it that long. Yet that is. I have my boat pulled and on the
hard, however, it is still my escape and I will be sleeping on her
while I prepare her for the next year. The heater has functioned
very well in keeping me warm as we have had a very un-seasonably cold
October. Saw snow on the ground twice this month. BRRR Anyhow,
the heater did the job, two would have done better but one held the
chill off the cabin. The heater was about 50.00 at Wal-mart/Kmart
etc.

Subject: [watkins] Finally made it to the boat, then
........................

Well, after three weeks of cleaning, work, and chores, Johnnie and I
finally made it to the boat. The minute we got to the boat it
started
raining! Man......
So we took a two hour nap, made coffee, and I starred at the 1 gallon
porta-potti while the rain came down.

Now, a question for someone: what type of heat should I use for the
cabin? We are planning on sailing year-round, unless you guys think
it
would be better for the boat to get it out and store it during the
hard winter months in Atlanta, so what is the best? (alcohol,
electric (I have a 1000 watt portable Honda generator), propane, etc?
We are going to participate in a race on January 1st, so I would like
to keep the boat in the water until then, and would like to spend
some
nights on the boat, maybe even in a sonw-storm, if we get any snow
this year. After that, we were going to bring it home for
January/February work for the raft-up (new wood for the transom and
replace chain-plate), but it sure is nice to just go to the dock and
sit there, that is if the weather is too bad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, about the heater or anything
else!?

Thanks, and I sure am glad that I can pull my boat with a 6 cylinder
ford Windstar, and don't have to hire a "big rig." Maybe the small
potti isn't so bad after all! See you guys in VA.

Conrad and Johnnie Cheney

How come you took her out before you took down
the sails? If you have a furling you may catch too much
wind and I woul;d rather heel in the water than on land....
Took mine down yesterday and now ready for hard.
Lousy sailing season on Barnegat this year. Hope for
better 2003.

if you have an alcohol galley stove you can invert a clay flowerpot over the
lit burner and it will heat up the cabin nicely (unless you are in the artic
or Minnesota or someplace like that). big problem is condensation which
leads to mildew.

Hi You know larger capacity potties are available. As for year-round sailing
the weather in your area should not hurt your boat. I leave Wildest Dream in
the water every winter. Unless you live in Yankee land and have to be cosened
about hard freezes, your boat is better off in the water.
Jim Brewer 78W27 Wildest Dream
