My Story — Judi Cohen
I'm an ex Elementary School Teacher, turned Mom and Entrepreneur.
My retail business and websites began with one product that I
developed out of the frustration of trying to potty train a stubborn
three year old. Nursery School was just around the corner and our
little one was still in diapers. With pressure from well meaning
relatives and peer group Moms whose kids were already out of
diapers, I figured I had one last chance at potty training. I urged
my husband to draw a huge elephant, cut around it and tape the
elephant shape to the inside of the bathroom door. I ran out and
bought a bunch of stickers.
I sat my daughter on her potty, pointed out her new potty elephant
and told her she'd get to place a sticker on the elephant whenever
she peed or pooped in the potty….that the elephant would be
her "potty pet" and bathroom companion. Arika peed and pooped
several times that day, was thrilled to chart her little successes
on the elephant, and went to Nursery School "diaperless", wearing
cute ruffled panties. She had been potty trained in one day! I'm
serious!
My husband and I thought, "Hummmmm, do we have an invention, here,
that could help other parents in the same predicament?"
I contacted a Patent Attorney and after several years of trial and
error development, a zillion mistakes, and a ton of money spent, we
emerged with four Potti Pets: Hippo, Elephant, Dinosaur and Piggy.
Looking back, they were the first real potty training systems that
became nationally recognized and endorsed by Pediatricians.
While I was trying to market my four Potti Pets, I sauntered into a
local Wal-Mart and saw a Baby Sale being advertised. I asked the
store manager if I could join the sale. After he and the sales
staff were finished laughing at me, I was politely told, "No. You
have to go to Corporate."
My own naiveté compelled me to call Wal-Mart's Corporate office and
ask to speak to their VP of Merchandising. After I presented my
invention, verbally, he told me that the Infant/Toddler Buyer would
contact me shortly. I was on a plane headed for Bentonville, AR two
weeks later. YIKES!
That success led us to redevelop Potti Pets into more versions, all
of them coming with audios, Happy Hygiene Charts and "No More
Diapers" Diplomas. The reason that Potti Pets have worked so well is
that the child plays an active part in the training process. The
ball is in the child's court, especially if he/she selects the Potti
Pet.
I have developed other Parenting/Child Development products:
Behavior Beasts –which teaches young children how to behave, What-A-
Kid Incentives— a set of motivational coupons which can be
personalized and redeemed, and I've added a set of Personalized
Potty Charts to the potty training mix. My off beat sense of humor
is in everything I develop. Even one Child Psychiatrist who
reviewed Behavior Beasts said, "They're a little goofy, but they
work!"
When we put our products on the Internet, eight years ago, other
companies and parents who had appropriate products asked to join, so
we now have a Parenting Catalogue, at http://www.WeBehave.Com and a
One Stop Potty Shop at http://www.PottyTrainingStuff.com . Both of
the sites have Special Needs Sections, as my brother has Fragile X
Syndrome and I've made it a personal challenge to make sure he is
cared for with dignity when I'm gone.
As the economy turned, we decided to move out of the corporate
retail sector and gradually move our business almost wholly into
cyberspace. My daughter is in college and out of diapers (whew!),
my husband shares the webmaster role with me (he's the techie) and I
still concoct new ideas and new ways to get us into trouble (he
says).
