You need to look into 1800PartyShop. Similar to Mountain Gourmet in the
respect that you can do a lot online with it, including a website from the
company. It is $150 to start. I just came from conference and I am SOOO
glad to be with this company now.
No inventory
No home parties to book
No shipping on your end
And did I mention they talked about our future STOCK OPTIONS at conferences?
Whoo hoo!

1800PartyShop - This business is becoming a household name. Would you like
to work from home? Without home parties or having to invest in huge amounts
of inventory? You can do it all with 1800PartyShop. We feature theme
parties and gifts delivered direct to your door. Low start up cost, and
HIGH potential. This truly is a ground floor oppurtunity, and this company
is going places. We met estimated sales goals for 1999 and have made new
sales records each month. We have estimated sales of $50 million in 2001.
Shouldn't you be a part of this? You can even sell and recruit online,
unlike more direct sales companies. Visit

PERSONAL GROWTH
A PATH OF SIMPLICITY
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

By Edel Jarboe

I didn't start out trying to simplify my life. The decision to start my own
business felt like I was grabbing a lifeline.

I was suffocating in my accounting job. I was always tired and I was
constantly complaining that I wasn't happy. I assumed it was the stress of
my job that was making me miserable. However, when I quit my job and went
back to school, I was surprised to find that I was still unhappy. I was
pursuing a worthwhile goal but my heart wasn't in it. What was going on? If
my job wasn't the source of my unhappiness, then what was?

It took a single question to help me turn my life around. One day when
nothing seemed to be going right, I asked myself, "what would it take for me
to be happy? Not just for tomorrow or a year from now, but for years to
come?" After much soul searching, the answer was "being my own boss."
Moreover, when I examined this statement, I realized that I meant more than
just the way that I earned a living. Being my own boss meant being conscious
of the choices I was making and being in charge of the quality of my life. I
realized that I didn't just want to be a writer. I wanted to be the author
of my own life. Most importantly, I also realized that I wasn't powerless. I
had always had the power to create the life I wanted. Somewhere along the
way, I had forgotten what was important to me and my happiness.

Knowing what you want makes life a lot simpler. I stopped thinking in terms
of what was and started thinking instead of what could be. I knew that I
wanted to write, but what did I want to write about? I examined my
alternatives and decided that what would be most fulfilling to me would be
to help others find their path a.k.a. self help. Once I was committed to
this course of action, I started working on creating my own online magazine
geared towards helping women take control of their lives. When it came time
to name my business, I chose "Joyful Living" because I wanted other women to
find the joy in their lives.

About a month after I started my business, I was talking to a friend who
remarked upon my change in outlook and on how relaxed and happy I was. The
words "life is simpler when you know what you want" fell out of my mouth.
Quite by accident, I had hit upon the very cornerstone of simpler living:
living a life of choice and of quality. I also realized that I had
inadvertently simplified my life. In the months since I had committed to
being my own boss, I had been taking better care of myself and making time
for the things that were important to me. I was healthier, happier, and I
felt more balanced. I wasn't stressed out anymore and I felt that I could
handle anything that came my way. I felt like I was doing what I was meant
to do. I was fulfilled. Soon after that conversation, I changed the name of
my business to Simpler Living.

Twelve Practical Ways I Have Simplified My Life

1. I switched to a no fuss hair style and I wear less makeup. If anything,
my skin and hair are healthier than ever.

2. I have made peace with the past by forgiving those who have hurt me. You
can't move forward if you are always looking back.

3. Having a home-based business eliminates the stress of commuting and I am
saving gas and money.

4. I have scaled down my wardrobe to my four favorite colors which makes
shopping a lot easier.

5. I exercise 4-5 times a week. I have more energy, a more positive outlook
on life, and I love the long walks with my husband.

6. I now use email to communicate with family and friends who aren't near
by.

7. I watch only 1 to 1 1/2 hours of television a day during the week. This
gives me more time to read and work on other projects. In fact, Sunday
evening is our designated reading night. It helps us relax before the start
of each week.

8. I have eliminated coffee, soda, and chocolate (well, almost) from my
diet. I no longer suffer from their side effects of fatigue, irritability,
and that "hyped up" feeling.

9. I delegate and delete tasks more often. I realize that I don't have to do
everything. I no longer feel the need to be in absolute control.

10. I have learned to be more flexible and more open to different ideas. My
way is not the only way.

11. I use master lists for meal planning, grocery shopping, chores,
birthdays, and holidays.

12. I plan my goals. Instead of just saying that I want to publish a book in
6 months, I sit down and map out exactly what will need to happen and when.
I also check back to see how I am doing.

How Can You Simplify Your Life?

1. Find your heart and follow it. This works best if you can state your
purpose in one to three sentences. . For example, "I express myself fully by
___________". (This is also known as a personal mission statement.) Take
time alone and make a list of what is important to you. Brainstorm. Look for
connections between concepts and values that resonate deeply within you. Do
not censure yourself. Let your heart flow freely and let it guide you to
your true Purpose.

2. Examine all your options. Don't get locked into thinking that there is
only one way to create the life you want. Be willing to change your focus.

3. Create a plan for your happiness. Be committed and be focused on living
out your own personal mission statement.

4. Act on your plan. Make time for what is important to you. Look for ways
to streamline your life so that you can enjoy your life more fully each and
every day.

Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Kristine Cherry.  My husband and I own EarthDaughter Arts, a
jewelry design and collectible card game business.  A strange mixture, you
say?  It is, but we are both doing something we love.  We operate out of
our home and on the world wide web.  We began by having dealer's tables at
science fiction/fantasy and literary conventions around California and
realized it could be something other than a small time operation when I
sold $500.00 of my jewelry at the World Science Fiction convention in 1994
in San Francisco at the Moscone Convention Center.  The odd mixture of
jewelry and card games helps us get through tough conventions where one or
the other doesn't sell as well, and it helps attract people that would buy
only one or the other type of product.  Many of our customers buy both
games and jewelry from us!  We have made a lot of new friends and travel
around Southern, Central and Northern California, which helps us keep in
touch with our older customers.  Jewelry was an easy pick for me as
something I wanted to do that was creative and it doesn't need any
expensive local permits such as candy making would demand (our other
passion).  We have been in business 7 years and while we have had tough
times, we are always learning and trying new things.  The world wide web
has become the next frontier for us to tackle and has allowed us to move
stock that does not do well in other venues.  If you would like further
information or advice, please feel free to email us :-)
Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever thought, I wish there was something I could do to make a
little extra money, but not be tied down 5 - 7 days a week to the job. Well
that's what I thought when I became a Rags Land clothing representative and
D.O.T.S. demonstrator. My "real" job, as I know many of you know what I'm
talking about, is web design. I began web design back in 1993, when it
really wasn't very popular. Only the big names had web sites. And it was
really hard to find small businesses who believed that the internet was
really going to be something. I basically taught myself by trial and error.
I would make up businesses and pretend websites, just so I would have a
practice site. I never published these, but it's how I taught myself. I
felt like I was playing all the time instead of really working. Well one
day I decided ok, I've got to come up with a way to get some real business.
And I knew that I wanted to market small/family businesses. So I went to
the grocery store and picked 2 magazines, one was a beanie baby collectors
book and the other a doll book. I sat down with both the books looked at it
from front to back, and every ad that did not have a web address, I wrote
down. If they had an email, I'd put that or if only a snail mail address,
I'd put that. Then I came out with a "form" type email letter introducing
myself and explaining that I am a stay at home mom. Not trying to make a
killing, but just a enough spending money for movies and McDonald's. I
think that's what got attention, because a lot of my response commented on
that line : ) But it wasn't a marketing line, it was just the honest
truth.
I then made a "form" type letter for the ones I'd snail mail to. I spent
about $25 in postage. And I mailed and emailed all these letters to
potential clients. I had set packages prices (and boy was I given my work
away back then, lol). Within 3 days of all the email I sent out and snail
mail, I had 3 website projects!!! I was on cloud nine. I'm very proud to
say that I still have these 3 clients now. My biggest fear was that they
would ask me to do something that I had no idea how to do. And that did
happen many times. But I would teach myself and try until I got it right.
I wanted to please these 3 clients to no end. Because I've never done
advertising, besides the letters I sent out 4 years ago. All my business
has come from word of mouth! And let me tell you, that's the best there is.
>From that point on, I constantly have a project in the works. It's really
weird, as soon as I'm about a day or two from finishing one, I'll get
contacted by someone asking for work. I love what I do. I still feel like
I'm playing to get paid. But that's ok. And I hope I continue to love what
I do. Last year with my web design and other "little play businesses" I was
able to pay for a 7 day Disney Cruise Vacation for my husband and 2
children. I tell you what, that had to be the best feeling in the world.
As the years have gone by I've continued to enjoy my web design. But I was
also looking for something more geared toward something that I could make
money and have a hobby. So I joined D.O.T.S. and CTMH scrapbook and rubber
stamps. I've only been with the company since September of 1999. I sold
$1900 in the first 3 months and received the "Straight to the Top" goal
award. I achieved those sales simply by starting a group of 10 ladies in a
club, I call the 10 for 10 club. Which guaranteed me 10 months of sales
with at least $100 in sales for each month. Each lady is required to spend
$10 a month. And usually they spend more than that. Then as this 1st 10
for 10 club was starting, I began a waiting list for my second one. And so
on. Now I have 3 10 for 10 clubs, that guarantee me a minimum of $300 in
sales a month. Just enough for me to buy stamps for myself and take care of
my hobby! I also hold online classes for beginner stampers to introduce to
them to my love of stamping. And in March I'm starting online workshops for
more advanced classes in stamping! I hold these at a great website called
www.thepartyproject.com . And Julie takes care of everything for me there,
she's the best. The next business I'm involved in is RAGS LAND children's
clothing. Now this opportunity came along for me at a perfect time. As my
children can wear this clothing. And I only work for them 2 times a year.
So it doesn't take anymore time away then I'm already involved in now. Two
times a year I hold a 3 day trunk showing in my home, once in Spring and
then in Fall. That's it. I also do outside catalog parties and will hold
trunk showings in friends homes. I also host a week long open house at
www.thepartyproject.com , which helps my sales! The company is great, there
is NO start up fees and they pay for everything. The only thing I've paid
for is mailing out catalogs. But the catalogs are free and every time I
gain a customer the company mails them a catalog for me the next season.
RAGS LAND carries infants, children's and mother's clothing as well as
accessories and shoes! I love it! And I really love the fact that it only
takes about 10 days out of the year for me to do! RAGS LAND is currently
looking for representatives all over the US. Especially in the Northern and
West of the Carolinas. If you think you might be interested, feel free to
contact me and I will pass along your name to my recruiter. This company
does not work like a pyramid, you don't have downlines and uplines. The
company does give you a small bonus if you recruit someone who has a
successful first trunk showing. So as you can see I stay pretty busy. But
that's the way I like it. My husband owns a RV dealership in Spartanburg,
SC, which is about 45 mins. from where we live. So he's a pretty busy on
the go man. That's why I like having lots of avenues for me to express
myself and meet new people. I hope I have showed you how easy it can be to
have several different areas of interest in your work. My ideas on finding
business can work for anyone. It just takes effort and a little work. The
way I found emails and addresses for my webdesign, could easily work for any
type
of business. The 10 for 10 club could really be incorporated into any type
of business as well as the online parties! If you would like to see the
form I use for that club to get ideas, feel free to contact me. Another
great way to get exposure is to contact your area "Welcome Wagon", my area
agent puts something about my business in every packet that goes out to new
residents in my area. She visits 20 a month.
I hope in all you do it not only makes money for you, but that you love what
you do. I've been told I'm so lucky to be able to stay home, make money and
LOVE what I do. And I really do. Every new website is exciting to me and I
can't wait to get started and finish it. Every D.O.T.S. order that arrives
is like Christmas! As well as every season when those 2 huge boxes of
clothing show up at my doorstep, it's like shopping heaven!
Take care and good luck with your adventures,
Kelly Masters

Kelly Masters, will be 30 in April and is a stay at home Mom of
2!...actually 3 if you count the big baby. They live in SC. She is
originally from Charlotte, NC originally
and her husband is from Greenwood, SC originally. They lived there for 9
years
after they were married, while her husband worked for his parents RV
dealership.  Now
they live in SC, so he can run the dealership in Spartanburg, SC. Her
parents
were RV dealers in Charlotte, that's how they met. They refer to their
marriage as "arranged."
Kelly and her family love what she does. She believes there is no such
thing as luck, one makes it on his or her own. She feels , if you have a
goal and a determination to succeed, you will. Well that's just an excuse,
she says. A person can overcome anything with a little will power and desire
to achieve.

Readers, here are a couple of ideas.
AGAIN: Ladies, Gents...I would be your first customer, if you started
promoting
newsletters!   Just a hint.
     How about opening a consignment shop...these always seem to do well. Or
perhaps a classified area for baby clothes.

Leaving this hint in again: Look into publishing online. Look at what
I received in a newsletter I sub to:

"This can be seen in
action at: http://www.talewins.com/Browzer/Books.htm
Right now Browzer Books is receiving 2500 page views per
week. When we started this 5 weeks ago we were receiving

Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was an amazing thing becoming a mother.  You truly never know what you
are in for. When my daughter was born, it was decided that I would continue
to work.
It was very scary for me letting her go at such a small and tender age of 6
weeks.
Although it had to be done, I decided it was important to me that I knew
exactly what she did. I had asked the daycare provider to keep an hourly
journal of the basic things she did. It was an amazing resource.  Not only
did it save on time when I picked her up, it was a chance to her schedule
form, and how she was growing.
When my son was born and we decided that I should now stay home we were in
the search for me to bring in some extra money.  After much thought, I said
I
have the perfect way!! That is when I put my great idea and book into actual
form.
It is great to see my daughter, now 6, be excited for me and the book.
Since then, we now have two other books and it is even better that both my
children can help me with
them.
I encourage everyone with a great idea to go for it.  As long as you believe
in the product you can convince others too.
Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Linda Miller, from Plainwell, MI. I am an independent distributor
for New Image International and the Balanced Living Mall. Several years ago,
I lost my job as a corporate paralegal in a corporate downsizing and it was
devastating for me, to say the least. I realized then that there is no such
thing as job security. I began to search for a home-based business so that I
would never again have to depend on an employer for my security. I joined
several companies, but was not successful with any of them - mostly because I
didn't know what to do after I joined. I felt alone and without proper
training or support.

I recently married for the second time (to a wonderful man I met on AOL!) and
moved from NC to MI - quite a move for me! My new husband and I often
discussed how we would like to find something that we could do together to
help other people and still be able to become financially independent
ourselves. While working temporarily with the Chamber of Commerce to plan an
annual festival, I met a new friend who told me about an all natural weight
loss product. I have always taken a variety of herbs and vitamins, so I
recognized the ingredients in the products and ordered immediately. Both my
husband and I were so pleased with the products that we both became
distributors. I found the company had a great line of all natural products.

I soon realized that this company was different than any network marketing
company I had ever known. We have superior life-altering natural health
products and a great skin care line. The training program is unlike anything
in network marketing history - completely duplicatable! There is no
guess-work involved. It is a proven system and it WORKS! The difference in
this company is that it is God-centered. The founder and president was a
minister for 18 years and he considers this company to be an extension of his
ministry to help as many people as possible to improve their image and
lifestyle. I am now able to help people look better, feel better and become
financially independent!

Sound too good to be true? I agree. But I assure you it is true. If you
are willing to work hard for 3-5 years, you can have the opportunity to
semi-retire with a six-figure residual income for life - an income that can
be inherited by your children and grandchildren. Please contact me if I can
help you in any way!

Her Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I started my home-based business because my friend was with the same company
and she told me she was making $300 a month. I thought that I could use a
little extra money so I decided to start too. With Watkins, there are many
ways to do business and I was going to do them all! Catalog sales, home
parties, fund raisers, business gift baskets -- you name it, I was going to
do it EXCEPT, I was NEVER going to sponsor anyone. I didn't think it was
right to make money from other people's efforts. So I started. Catalog sales
went fine, but home parties were another story. I was very shy so standing in
front of a group was very hard for me to do. But I was determined to be a
success so I booked my first party. A few days before it was scheduled, the
hostess called me and said no one was coming. I was devastated but I booked
another party -- the same thing happened! Yikes! What to do now?
Dan and I were getting married that year, so I booked a party at my own home
and invited the female wedding guests the night of his Bachelor Party! I
figured they'd all be available. I invited 50 ladies and 7 showed up and no
one would book a party. [sigh] Then I went to a garage sale and met a Mary
Kay lady. I agreed to hold a class for her and she agreed to hold a party for
me. Yeah! I was started and at her party there was 1 booking. Then another
Mary Kay lady agreed to help me get started and there were bookings from her
party too. At first, my parties were very small. I would come home and wonder
if I would ever make any money. But, I kept on going and now most of my
parties run over $300 and I had one that was almost $1,000 -- remember, I am
selling items that run from about $4 to about $10.
About 2 years after I started, a young Mom came to me and asked me if she
could do what I was doing to make some extra money. I said "Yes" and
sponsored her. She was able to quit her part time job, do a party each week
and stay home with her kids. Now I began to understand why I should sponsor
others. At about the same time I sponsored a 66 year old lady, who started
her business because she never wanted to lose her "Watkins Man" again. She
had been using Watkins Poultry Seasoning for 50 YEARS and wanted to buy some
for her Granddaughter who lives in Hawaii. She has fun just selling a few
products a month via her "satellites," as she calls them. She gives books to
her adult children, they take them to work and collect orders.
My original "Why" was simply to earn a little extra money, but as my business
grew, that has changed. I now love helping others learn how to earn an income
working out of their homes and I am working my way toward a nice income that
will allow Dan and I to travel and have the home of our dreams.
Along the way, I fell in love with my product line and the company I
represent. I have also made many good friends. Both Watkins Associates who
are part of my team and those who are not. I also have met many wonderful
people who have held parties or have become my customer. For me, the number
one reason I love my business is the wonderful people I've met.
Story:
My name is Keri Graham, a newly single mom of three teenage sons. I was
working in the legal field and very heavily in debt after a divorce. I
wanted
to be home so I could be there for my sons, they were very depressed form
the
divorce and I needed to be there. I was contacted about a home business and
started researching it as a possibility for me. I talked with two single
moms
who were earning about 1000. A week every week and decided I wanted to do
that too. I scrapped approximately 1500. Together by borrowing from
friends.
After receiving the information to get started I was convinced this was my
answer. Five weeks later I quit my job at the law firm and run a successful
marketing business that markets tax and financial information to
Individuals
and business owners. I also train others in running their business for
those
who want to market from home. I am able to pick up the boys, any time and
have learned an incredible amount about economics, the law, IRS, and have
helped many others to become educated and stronger. I will never work for
an
employer again or pay income taxes to the IRS now that I know the choices
that are readily available to me. Thank You Keri Graham
Story:
Starting a Business Online
OK, so you know you want your own business and you want one you can work
from home with the kind of hours that will let you be there for your family
whenever they need you.  But do you have what it takes?
Ask yourself if you have the following characteristics:
* Overpowering need to achieve (not to be confused with a need to be liked
or to exercise power)...like creating something better than anyone else or
something no one else has done yet.
* Follow through on commitment (no quitting when the going gets tough)...in
short, perseverance.
* Positive mental attitude, remaining optimistic in new or unfamiliar
situations.
* Objectivity - ability to weigh and assess risks in a certain course of
action as well as being realistic about your own abilities and limitations.
* Respect about money (not an end in itself)...using money to accomplish
things.
* Tendency to anticipate developments and to make things happen, rather
than constantly reacting to problems as they arise.
* Resourcefulness - solving unique problems in unique ways, handling things
that come up unexpectedly even without previous experience to rely on.
* Strong personal relations skills - cheerful, cooperative, getting along
with others.
* Well-developed communication skills.
* Well-rounded knowledge about the product or service of your business.
Well, how did you do?  10 out of 10 is great!  Yet, even 5 of 10 could
work; so long as you see the areas that need work and then give your all to
improving those areas!  Just remember, it's the attitude that matters the
most...not the knowledge.  Knowledge can be gained in time.  Attitude must
be there...the kind of attitude that will keep you going until you are
successful!
Ready to get started?  Since each of us have uniquely specific
circumstances it's best to review as much information as you can and then
select what applies to you best.
As you've read in my first installment "Do You Believe In Miracles?" I made
use of a local resource of our Community Action Program (CAP) here in the
Coulee Region of Wisconsin.  The Job and Business Developer, Mary, pointed
me to many other resources including this one:
University of LaCrosse Wisconsin, Business Development Center -
http://perth.uwlax.edu/bdc/
This site will offer you plenty of helpful suggestions!  They also have a
great page for links to places like the Small Business Administration,
Patents and Trademarks Offices, the IRS, or the Better Business Bureau and
several others - http://perth.uwlax.edu/bdc/websites.html
By far the best thing for a mom to do is connect with other moms who are
already doing what you want to be doing!  A Mom's Love -
http://www.amomslove.com is of course one way to do that!
Some of the others I've found very helpful are:
Mom's Network Exchange - http://www.momsnetwork.com
Work At Home Moms - http://www.wahm.com
Mom's Online - http://www.momsonline.com
Digital Women - http://www.digital-women.com
Home Based Working Moms - http://www.hbwm.com
If those don't keep you busy enough you may find some of the following of
interest in developing your personal plan for a home based business.
An Income of Her Own - http://www.anincomeofherown.com
Capital Connection Entrepreneur's Resources -
http://www.capital-connection.com
Community Action Program Virtual Incubator - http://www.virtualincubate.com
Grant's Web - http://sra.rams.com/cws/sra/resource.htm
National Association of Women Business Owners - http://www.nawbo.org
National Women's Business Council - http://www.womenconnect.com/nwbc
Wisconsin State Department of Workforce Development -
http://www.dwd.state.wi.us
Women Weaving Webs - http://www.women.weavingwebs.com
There are of course many more!  No doubt as you click thru these sites
you'll find some.  Enjoy!
I'll be back after the first of the year to help you with writing that
business plan!
May Y2K fulfill our richest dreams!
Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wyndham Soapworks is a small family owned and operated cottage business in
the Tampa, Florida area. Our cocoabutter soaps are"manufactured" in small
batches
right in our kitchen by hand stirring, pouring into small slab molds, and
individually
cutting each bar. Our "distribution center" is the dining room table. Our soaps
are in several local shops and are shipped across the globe to several
international clients via website orders.

Wyndham Soapworks was created after I decided to stop using cheap corporate
soap that made my skin dry and itchy. After being diagnosed with eczema and
enduring steroid shots, I wanted to treat my skin better and prevent further
discomfort.

A kind person gave me a bar of handcrafted goatmilk soap, and showering
became a joy rather than test of endurance and I set out to find out why the
storebought soap had caused me such grief for so long.

My hunt for answers brought me to the following conclusion;

Commercially produced soaps are usually made with tallow (beef fat), lard (pork
fat),
and a lot of inexpensive coconut oil to fill up the bulk of the recipe. Along
with that
they add dye, fragrance, surfactants, sudsing agents, water softeners, and
detergents.

I found that those additives are what irritated my skin. Worse, the
manufacturers salt
out the naturally occuring glycerin to sell elsewhere. The glycerin is what
would have
made the soap humectant. To replace the glycerin, they then add mineral oil and
then
call it a Beauty Bar which coats your skin with a non absorbable grease.

I decided it was time to stop using that garbage on my skin. I'm the type of
person that
likes to learn how to do interesting things just for the sake of having the
knowledge and
the skill, so I decided soapmaking would be very interesting indeed.

I purchased just about every book on soapmaking. Many are poorly written and
have
bad recipes that ended up being tossed down the garbage. Then I found all the
soapmaking mailing lists and began to actively participate in discussion with
other
soapmakers who had more experience under their belts. From there I learned why
certain combinations of oils made a soft bar of soap, while other combinations
made
a hard bar. I learned the alchemy behind the chemical reaction that turned oil
into soap.
I was completely addicted and once I had some successful batches, set out to
create
my own from scratch recipe.

I practiced and experimented until I came up with the perfect recipe to suit my
taste
and I began giving bars away at family gatherings and at some places where I
volunteer.
Of course some folks looked at me funny as if I might be trying to communicate
something by giving them soap, but others took it in the spirit it was offered
and
appreciated a handmade gift. Finally, my child's godfather, after using a ton
of my soap
urged me to start selling it and Wyndham Soapworks was born.

Through all of this I was homeschooling a young child and a SAHM. Occasionally
it
was challenging to keep the little one from being underfoot while working with
slippery
oils and butters. I would restrict myself to making batches when she went to
bed.
When I need to service a wholesale account, I arrange for her to go to a
friend's house
to play so that I can conduct business in a professional manner. I do, however
bring her
along when I am delivering orders as it lets people see that I'm a struggling
mother too
and not some corporate robot.

Marketing my product seems to be as challenging as coming up with the recipe and
packaging it in a suitable manner. I give out samples wherever I can along with
catalogs,
business cards, and coupons. I give discounts for referral sales and ask all my
customers
to pass along materials to anyone they know who might be interested in my
product.  I was
just recently interviewed by an author and will appear in the newly released
book,
"Soapmaking For Fun and Profit". Whenever invited, I submit my business story
for
publication to get the word out that I am here and why someone should use my
product
rather than Proctor & Gamble, and Colgate.

Promoting is very time consuming and challenging, but it's something that must
be done
constantly to build up customer loyalty and repeat business.

As a sidebar to this, I have to say that it has been a very good experience
exposing my child to the business. She is getting to see economics, self
reliance, determination, and entrepeneurship in action. She's watching "The
American Dream" in action rather than learning it from a textbook in a
schoolroom. She is now designing her own bookmarks and hopes to make a business
out of them. Look out in the near future, for a new division of Wyndham
Soapworks. Possibly she'll name it "Bookmarks R' Us" <g>.

Do You Believe in Miracles? Part II By Andee Dunn
It was September before the equipment arrived! And for the next month my job was
to get used to the new programs and train the voice program to work for me. That
done, I'm now completely ready to take my business into production! Step one for
that is marketing! We have the product. We know the market. All that's left is
to reach that market. What I produce is a crafty product. And one major
marketing tool will be the internet, but there are also craft fairs, consignment
shops, and other places to set up a few samples in. So now I embark on the real
challenge. Making a home-based business turn a profit! Look for an update after
the holidays!

Community Action Program in the Eau Claire WI region.
Http://www.virtualincubate.com

From this site you can select *county resources* and then select *Monroe
County* to get the phone number of the Wisconsin Coulee Region Community
Action Program which is the CAP agency that has been helping me.

CAP uses state and federal funds as well as private donations for the many
programs they run. Here in Wisconsin they run programs for fuel
assistance, housing assistance, food pantries, low-priced used clothing and
furniture stores, in addition to their economic support and employment
services programs as well as numerous others. All programs are aimed at
helping community members with incomes below 200% of poverty levels.

It is possible that similar programs exist in all states but are run under
different names. It is also possible that programs in other states using
the name of Community Action Program could be running completely different types
of assistance. However, all states do have such programs that are not directly
part of that state's welfare, medical assistance, food stamps,
etc. services.

The only other link to fit possibly with this article might be my link for
the business that I'm starting.
http://www.momsnetwork.com/suites/acjw
Andee's Creative Jewels of Wisdom :)

In future articles I will have more links as I get into my search for the
right kind of home-based business, learning about web-based businesses,
learning about fees and taxes, creating your own internet store, and so forth.

Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Michelle Dunn and I own M.A.D. Collection Agency.  I started my
business in January 1998 and work from home.  I had worked in the corporate
world since College and worked in the Credit and Collections industry for 10
years.
Once I got married and had children, I hated the structured life of working
for someone else, but continued to do it because of stability of the
paycheck, insurance etc.
Then in January of 1998, I had been going through a divorce and had a great
job, making a lot of money but it entailed 2 hours of travel time a day and
I hardly saw my kids at a time that they needed me the most.  I decided my
goal was to start my own collection agency and work from home, why not!
Well, there are a lot of things to consider and no matter how many books you
read and how many people tell you, you will not really be prepared until you
do it.
People think you are crazy and let you know that they think this!  How could
you give up such a great paying job, with benefits, 401K, for what?  Most
people that work for someone else think people who work at home, sit around
in their pajamas watching Oprah.  They look in the classifieds for you, they
ask you to go shopping, and they stop by.  Why not?  Your not doing
anything!
Well, working at home and for yourself is harder than working for someone
else!  You have to be disciplined and work more than you ever have.  More
hours and harder work, you suddenly have to do things you never had to do
before and may not even know how to do!
I was making a great salary at my job and the first month of being home, I
made $6.00.  That’s it for the month!  Well, I needed customers and so I set
a goal for myself, okay, I am going to have 5 new customers by next month.
I got dressed up and went door to door to local businesses and left my
information and followed up in a week with a call.  I looked through the
yellow pages and called anyone I thought could use my service, I taught
myself how to create a web page and promoted it.  I made flyers and business
cards.  I did direct mailings.  I looked through the classified ads in the
newspapers and sent mailing and called anyone who was looking for a credit
manager.  If they need a credit manager, they might need a collection
agency.
Well, this worked and I had 7 new customers by the next month and made $150.
I was very proud.  I continued doing this and still do it; I recently had a
call from a potential client who was calling me because of the information I
had dropped off when I first started!  They finally needed my service and
there was my bright red folder!
You need to make yourself familiar to people, if you send a monthly flyer or
newsletter, when they suddenly need your service, you will pop into their
mind.  You should just be in everyone’s face, join the chamber of commerce
or rotary or both!  Send surveys to existing customers and then ask if you
can use the information in your flyers or brochure.    Always have business
cards with you and leave them everywhere you can.
I had pens made up with my company name and phone number on them and
everywhere you would use a pen, I use mine and leave it.  Such as the bank,
post office, video rental place, I have actually gotten customers this way.
If you keep promoting yourself and keep yourself visible you can be
successful.
Do You Believe in Miracles?
By Andee Dunn
Do you believe in miracles? Does every cloud have a silver lining for you?
Is there *always* a better way to look at things, no matter how bad they
are? Well, I'm like that! The "eternal optimist" as some have called me. LOL
What would you do if your entire life was over busy with the care of several
kids and you didn't have time to take an average 40 hour, 9 to 5, sort of
job BUT you suddenly found yourself as the only adult and sole support to
your brood!?!?!?! The kids still need all their medical care and all their
therapies. The house still needs daily cleaning. The meals still need to be
carefully prepared. Oh, did I mention homeschooling? The studies must go on
as close to normal as possible. And one more itsy bitsy wrinkle...YOU have
also lost 80% of normal function in both hands and arms!
EVERYONE you know is asking, "What are going to do?"
EVERYONE you know, all those people who've always wondered how you did all
that you WERE doing, are all very concerned about HOW you're going to get
through this one! And you just keep telling them "something will work out"
all the while feeling this tremendous weight and fear of what you are going
to do now! On the outside, you're not letting this get to you yet. But on
the inside you're terrified that if you can't come up with something to
support your family then you won't have much of a family! They may go into
foster homes. But they may also end up living with their abusive father.
OK…so now with all this going on in YOUR life; Would you even THINK of
starting up a new business?!
SURE YOU WOULD!!!!
It's the only logical solution! You set your own hours! You decide what has
priority from week to week, from day to day, even from hour to hour (for
those times when one of the kids suddenly must be taken to the clinic!)! And
you decide just how much money you will get for all your effort! You are in
charge!
Sure, some folks will tell you you're not looking at the whole picture. You
could lose everything! You might not find the funding needed to get off to a
great start. You could end up working all kinds of odd hours and maybe
missing out on some really great quality time with your kids. You could find
you have too much to get done and not do any of it very well, and then
you'll lose everything. You could…
Yes, there are always pessimists! And there will always be someone to tell
you, 'You're crazy!' 'You can't do this!' 'It won't work!' Are you going to
let THEM run your life? Are you going to let THEM intimidate you? Will you
stand up to THEM and just go ahead and do it?
The SINGLE MOST important thing in having a successful home-based business
is this: ATTITUDE! Several studies have been done that show the biggest
variable in successful vs. non-successful small businesses is that someone
in charge refused to give up or give in to any and all obstacles to getting
that business going!
That's where I was roughly a year ago! In the beginning there were some
rough times to conquer. I couldn't decide on what type of business to
pursue. I didn't have a clue as to how I'd fund it. And I was not all that
confident in my own abilities, even though I'd overcome countless obstacles
with even more difficult challenges all throughout my life! BUT I did have a
very highly positive attitude! I firmly believed that home-based
self-employment was the ONLY way I was ever going to properly support my
children and myself. And not only was I so sure of this and so positive I'd
find a way, deep down I had another strong incentive: I wanted
to be able to make more money than my ex ever did while we were together.
(Ok, so I've got a bit of odd humor on this one)
So what was my first step? Other than deciding home-based self-employment
was IT, I had to convince my caseworker that this was the way to go too.
ATTITUDE will get you everywhere, a positive attitude that is. Once I had
her convinced I needed to find a mentor, someone my caseworker could go to
and get told that I was indeed working hard at this plan. Being on
government assistance is degrading enough in most areas. You're in a bad
spot. You're fighting lots of negatives. But you can't let it get you down
if you're going to do this! Positive Attitude! Just keep thinking that!
I found my mentor in the form of our local Community Action Program. They
had someone called a "Job and Business Developer" within their Economic
Support/Employment Services Division. I also fondly knew this someone as
Mary. Mary was there to raise my attitude when it needed it. Mary was there
to push me harder when I was slacking off. Mary was there to encourage my
ideas. And most of all Mary was there to help me be sure that every step was
taken with the goal of success boldly in mind!
Mary and I began working together in October. By January we had hashed out
half a dozen ideas on paper. We had done preliminary work in determining if
what I liked to do was something that would make me enough money by the end
of the first full year in business to be free of all government support. We
crossed off some ideas with just one worksheet! Others took longer, but met
the trash basket sooner or later. Then we found it! The one idea that passed
all tests! The one idea with the best prospects for success! The one idea
with the most room for expansion and growth! Oddly enough in my case, this
one idea had been right in front of my nose all the
time! Something for you to think about as you ponder your own possibilities!
With the idea in hand, and mind, we set about writing it down on paper. We
outlined what the product was, how it was made, where we got supplies from
to make it, how much each little thing cost, and how much time it took me to
produce it. This information was written into the business plan. We also had
to think about growth. At what point in growth would I no longer be able to
meet production on my own? If and when I had to hire others,
how would I do it and how much would I pay them? Then other business costs
had to figured in; insurance, postage, advertising, taxes, auto, delivery,
internet (some business would be conducted via a website), telephone, and so
on.
This is a lot, but not all that's needed in a well-written business plan.
Information about future expectations of the business such as how much money
it will bring in, before and after costs and business expenses. These had to
be projected for at least 3 years, even 5 for some funding sources. We also
had to include what we had in available funding and what other possible
resources we may choose to seek assistance from.
With someone experienced in doing this, all of this may not take too long to
pull together. But the whole idea of being in business for yourself means
that you will do as much as you possibly can yourself. At least until you
have a wide profit margin to pay someone to do it for you. Mary knew all the
hows and wheres about doing this…but her job as mentor was to teach me what
she knew. And all great teachers know that the student learns best when
actively doing the lesson, rather than just having it done by the teacher.
So, I did all the work! Mary would clue me in about where to look or what
other possibilities to look into for whatever I was working on, but I had to
get out and make the contacts and settle the negotiations.
We pretty much had the plan together by May. But there were many things to
finalize and some last minute adjustments as we got the business plan
completed. With the business plan ready, the time came to seek funding for
the equipment needed and the necessary supplies to start up the business.
For me, this involved working with rehabilitation people with my state
offices. They went to work with the business plan and assessing my
disabilities to come up with the best way to meet both demands. Then they
ordered the required equipment as we arranged for who would pay how much of
what costs.
In the time between ordering and receiving I was to go to local agencies and
discover what costs, if any, there might be related to business licenses and
permits. I also had to contact revenue offices, city, county, state, and
federal, to see about taxes and other expenses and whether or not I needed
an EIN (Employer Identification Number) yet.
We are a one parent family, living in rural America, working at leaving
domestic abuse behind us, and creating a better future for everyone.  I'm
just getting "Andee's Creative Jewels of Wisdom" into production.  I'm also
themselves if they have the desire and lots of supportive people in their
lives.  To succeed in anything requires a positive attitude and eliminating
as many of the negatives around you as possible.
I was born in Texas, raised in California, returned to Texas at 17, married
at 21 and moved to Oklahoma.  Five years later moved back to Texas.  Ten
years later moved to Wisconsin.  Lived in Wisconsin for nearly 5 years.
After being married almost 20 years I got divorced to get an abusive man
out of my home (he's not out of my life yet).
My hobbies include writing, crafting, sewing, baking.  I'm on the local
Family Preservation Planning Committee as well as a committee working to
decide how our county spends money to assist low-income families.  I'm
actively involved with all schools (elem, middle, high) (got kids in all of
them).  I strongly advocate for each child's educational rights and help
other families do the same by volunteering time with the Wisconsin Parent
Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Beginning

In October 1997, I was facing a layoff from my job as an assistant to the
controller of a major pharmaceutical company. I was also dealing with my
daughter, who was 8 at the time, struggling scholastically. Although I had
a great package at the time of my layoff I was unsure of what to do next. I
could choose to work outside my home, this would require me to drive into
the city, leaving my children at daycare all day long. A choice I was not
in favor of, with my daughter struggling the last thing she needed was a
full day without my assistance. I chose to work at a restaurant and stay at
home. I had a wish to work from my home with my own business, but at the
time was unsure of what services I could offer.
I had tried various programs of selling products, such as Discovery Toys, it
was not for me.

It was my daughter's continual struggles with school that introduced me to
the internet. I used the internet daily researching on reasons for her
struggles. I didn't accept the schools answer, "she is just slow" they told
me, and they didn't believe she had signs of a learning disability. In my
heart I knew they were wrong. Even others disagreed, she struggled with
comprehension. I studied and researched using the internet as my source of
research. After I found she had some symptoms for learning disability I
requested testing for her. The school would test her for L.D. and she was
held back a year. I fought this battle for a year and a half before I was
proven right, she had Auditory Processing Disorder, a language and
communication disability. This required speech and language assistance.
After a year of speech classes she is now an honor roll student.

From there I became involved with my children's school PTA. I was the
public relations officer. I handled all special events and developed the
school PTA website (my first website). The second website I developed was
to show my digital images and poetry,
http://www.angelfire.com/nc/lifepictures. From there I submitted images to
companies and started receiving pay for researching on the internet. My
next website was a campaign for peace in our schools,
http://www.angelfire.com/wy/peace.

I was not enjoying my work at the restaurant and spending hours on the
computer. My husband encouraged me to use it, he said to promote my
abilities using the internet. His theory of if you are going to spend so
much time on it, make money doing it made sense. He believed in me. I put
his faith in me to use, and started to develop my own business plan.

Combining my skills I researched and developed my e-commerce business. I
assist small and home based companies achieve a place in the internet world.
Taking products and services from local to global is what I provide. I
combined my graphic and design abilities, business degree, and enjoyment of
the internet into my homebased business, Create-A-Wish,
http://www.digitalmama.net. Create-A-Wish was developed with the thought
of helping other people who have products achieve a storefront and place on
the internet. Using my domain name digitalmama.com, I developed my website.
Soon I will have two websites, I am currently working on this
Create-A-Wish.com will be my business, and digitalmama.com will become my
page to continue my efforts to campaign for peace in our schools, updating
with legislative actions and the continuation of my development of PAVE
(Parents Against Violence Everywhere).

It is not easy to balance home and business, but it is far more rewarding.
I can be a wife, mother and a business woman. Developing my business
requires me to continually market myself, to constantly learn and research.
In the few short months I have been working at this I have come very far,
especially this last month. Such growth has required me to develop a plan
and to set goals. I have already met my six month goal, and I see it as my
beginning.

My daughter recently told me "It is so cool to tell people my Mom does
websites for people." Maybe it is an encouragement for her, that she can
achieve her dreams, and be anything she wants. I thank her for showing me
true courage.

If you are trying to start an online or offline business
these tips from Michelle are very valuable because they
come from her first-hand experience. Michelle has appeared
in "Ladies Home Journal" and other publications.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Michelle's Mad Marketing Tips:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.  Offer a sample

Like Mary of Sunshine greetings, you can have a free sample offer on your
website. You can check hers out here : http://www.sunshinegreetings.com
Also add a note to your printed materials that potential customers can call
or write for a free sample. You could even do a direct mailing or place
free on line classifieds that you are offering a free sample. Be careful
with the online free sample sometimes the response is tremendous and its
only people wanting a free card who may not order. But if you get any
orders out of it, it could be worth it.

2. Following up with a post card or personal note or both.

You can design your own post cards or use web cards, the cards that capture
your web page. You can even buy post cards for your region and send those
with a short note. I live in NH and like to send potential customers that
are in AZ or CA a post card from NH, with a moose or snow on it.

3.  Signature line in emails.

Be sure to have a signature line in your emails, that way every time you
send out an email, your advertising. Make sure you have your URL and email
address and that they are "clickable". Some email programs require you to
add the http:// to make your link clickable.

4. Free classifieds on the net.

Here are some places to place your add for free. You can also get more by
doing a search for free classifieds or free links.

http://www.submit4free.com/
http://www.fantasticlinks.com/JT1076/
http://www.websitings.com/classads/sites/classact.htm
http://ww.selfpromotion.com
http://zoomsearch.com/
http://www.site-exposure.com/

5. Send out a press release

You can send out a press release when:

You start a new business
You recruit a large number of distributors
You launch a new web site or add a new online service
You launch a new or enhanced product or service
You find a unique way to sell your products or service
Your business has an anniversary
You develop or use new technology
You servce your 100th or 1000th customer
Your buisness moves into new offices
Your business or website receives an award

You can write your own press release or hire someone to do it for you.

6.  Participating in trade shows.

If you belong to any organizations they may make announcements when there
will be a trade show. If you hear an advertisment for a trade show you can
call and ask how to particpate. Once your in one, you will receive
notifications yearly when they have their trade show asking you to
participate. This is a great way to network and get your name out there.

7. Become a memer of a local group such as a chamber or Rotary club.

When you become a member of a local group, it helps your other local
business know who you are and what you offer. Usually you will receive a
list of everyone who is also a member and you can then use this as part of
your mailing list. You will also have a contact name and not be sending
information blindly.

8.  Networking

We do this just by being on this list! Being an active member of a
discussion group is a great way to network.

9.  Direct mail

Make a catchy flyer and send it out in a creative way. Once I made flyers
on colored paper that said, : DO PEOPLE OWE YOU MONEY?? DO YOU WANT IT??
Then I had information on my services below that. After I folded the flyer,
I enclosed fake play money. I had people who did not want to use my
services calling me just to say they thought that was a great idea and it
caught their eye. The purpose is to get them to remember you.

10.  Offer a discount for a referral.

You can send a note to all your exisiting customers telling them if they
refer one person to you that you will give them a discount on their next
purchase. I did this once but offered a free gift. I sent out a flyer
offering a free gift if they referred anyone who placed at least one account
with me. The free gift was a HUGE bag of peanut M & M's. My customers
loved it and I still do it if I am having a slow time.

11.  Cold Calling.

I mostly did this when I first started out. I would put on a suit and grab
a bunch of my information and pens and go to all the local businesses. I
would just go in and introduce my self and ask them if they used a
collection service. I did not push and if they said no or yes, I had the
same response. "Can I leave my information with you in case you ever need
one or want to use a local agency?" They all said yes. Then I left 2 or 3
pens and that always brought a smile and helped them to remember me. Then
once in a while, I would just stop in to say Hi, and leave a magnet. I have
gotten clients by doing this, some a year later! So keep at it, it really
works!

I hope these ideas help you all and if anyone has any other ideas or
suggestions, email the list!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ACCOMMODATING A HOME-BASED BUSINESS
Deb Berg
Almost everyone needs or wants more money than they currently have, and with
this desire most of these people would like to start some sort of extra
income producing project.  The trouble is, not many of these people seem
able to fit "a second job" into their time schedules.
It's true that people are very busy, but extra time for some sort of
home-based extra income producing project can almost always be found.  It
may mean giving up or changing a few of your favorite past-times, such as
having your nails done or watching TV - but if you score big with your extra
income project, you will have all the time you've ever wanted for doing
whatever you want to do.
The first thing to do is to sit down with pencil and paper, and list your
daily schedule.  What time do you wake up - then step-by-step, list
everything you do each day.  Most people will find that they have about
3-hours each day that can be utilized in a more constructive or efficient
manner.  As we've already noted, you may have to give up the time you waste
in your local pub or a few of the television programs you watch, but it
should be worth it in the long run.
Efficient time management boils down to planning what you're going to do,
and then doing it without back-tracking.  Start by making a list of the
things you want to do tomorrow, each evening before you jump into bed.
Schedule your trips to the store or wherever to coincide with other things
you have to do, and with your trips to or from work.  Organize your trips to
take care of as many things as possible while you're out of the house.  Take
stock of the time you spend standing around just visiting "chit-chatting" -
especially the time you spend on the telephone - and eliminate all that
isn't necessary.
Whatever chores you have to do at home, set aside a specific time to do
them, and a specific amount of time to devote to them.  For instance, just
one hour a day on yard work would probably make your property the envy of
all your neighbors.  Don't try to do a week's work in one big flurry.
Whether it's painting your kitchen, ironing , or cleaning that closet, do a
little bit or one particular job each day and you'll be amazed at your
progress.
Take care of all your mail the day you receive it.  Don't let those bills
and letters pile up on you.  If you're unable to pay a bill immediately,
file it in a special place that's visible and note on the envelope the date
you intend to pay it.  Answer your letters the same day you get them.
The important thing is to think of your time as your most valuable asset -
it is - so organize what you have to do, and what you want to do.   From
there, it's just a matter of arranging your priorities.
Once you start listing and planning what you want to do, and them carry out
your plans, you'll find plenty of "extra time" for handling virtually any
kind of home-based income-producing project.  People in general may not like
routines or schedules, but without some sort of plan relative to what is
supposed to be done, the world would be lost in mass confusion.  Laws,
ordinances, and regulations are for the purpose of guiding people - we live
according to an accepted plan or way of life, and the better we can organize
ourselves - what we have to do, want to do, and end up doing - the more
productive and happy we become.
The secret of all financially successful people is simply that they are
organized and do not waste time.  Think about it - review your own
activities - and them see if you can't find a couple of extra hours in each
day for more constructive accomplishments.
When you begin planning, and then when you actually become involved in an
extra-income-producing endeavor, you should work it exactly as you've
organized your regular day-to-day activities - on a time-efficient basis.
Do what has to be done immediately - don't try to get done in an hour
something that's going to take a week.  Plan it out on paper what you have
to do, what you want to do, and when you're going to do it - then get right
on each project without procrastination.
Sometimes, burning the midnight oil is a necessity.  Plan actual
"concentration" times early in the morning, during children's naps, or after
they go to bed.  Get an answering machine or voice mail.  It's amazing how
much interruption it is for friends/family to call you while you are at
home...doing nothing!  Or so they seem to think.  If you need to screen your
calls, get an answering machine.  If you don't, get voice mail with your
phone company, it's well worth the few dollars a month to give you
uninterrupted "time" without social calls.  Then try to return calls during
dinner or just after while you're taking a breather for the evening.  I get
more work done between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and again after 9 p.m....in my pj's
than the rest of the day!
Finally, and above all else, when you're organizing your time and your
business, be sure to set aside time for relaxation.  Be sure to schedule
time when you and your spouse/significant other/children can be together.
You must not involve yourself in anything to the extent that you exclude
other people - particularly your loved ones - from your life. Plan a
mutually enjoyable event, such as bowling, (join a league) once a week with
your spouse/family/etc. Make a commitment to spend those couple of hours a
week with them.  It forces you out to relax and gives you that much needed R
& R and Family time!  You'll find that it truly revitalizes you and the
interaction with others may prove to be beneficial to your business.  You
just never know who may be bowling against you...perhaps your best client!
It's a known fact that you go further with "who you know" than "what you
know", that's the benefit of "networking".
Taking stock of the time you waste each day, and then reorganizing your
activities is what it's all about.  It's a matter of becoming time-efficient
in everything you do.  It's really easy to do, and you'll not only
accomplish a lot more, you'll become a happier person.
Readers, here are a couple of ideas I sent out yesterday
to some lists I am on:
#1.  Sell banner adveritsing for sites...Momslove takes
tons of time to put up each month and I don't have a whole
lot of time to find people interested in buying banners...you
could do this for sites and charge a certain percentage for
banner ads you sell!
#2  I was at the mall yesterday and saw one of those photo
tables set up..selling your photo or babies on mugs, keychains..
you name it...you could do this over the net..they send you their
photos over net and you mail finished product to them..great for
Christmas for that favorite uncle..we bought one one time.
Hi, we had the wrong url for Kathy Kehoe's...so here goes again!
Caroline
Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why I chose Purchase Plus Buyers Group

I have dabbled in Network Marketing for over 17 years. I say dabbled
because I never was successful at it. Along the way, I encountered good
and bad companies, good and bad pay plans, good and bad products, and
(unfortunately) good and bad people. I kept plugging along though, because
I'm a Math-type person who believes in the power of the MLM concept. It
just makes mathematical sense to me.

Some of the most valuable life lessons I have learned along my Network
Marketing journey have to do with realities about myself. For example,
much as I wish I were a good salesperson - I'm just not. Wrong personality
(remember I'm a Math-type, and we analytical just don't make good
salespeople). Now this is one huge stumbling block if you want to be
successful in MLM, because you *must* recruit if you are to succeed in this
business, i.e. you must be able to *sell* the idea. And it took me years
and years of trying and failing and wondering why I had failed to finally
realize WHY. Boy, can we kid ourselves! Network Marketing is a nice idea,
Kath, but you either figure out how to overcome this hurdle or give it up
and get back to your safe life not "bothering" people.

And that's how I came to Purchase Plus and to success in Network Marketing
after 17 years. You see, I don't have to recruit, and I don't have to
sell. Now before you tell me this sounds fishy, let me assure you that
this 2+ year old company is legal and ethical and has the BEST products and
services available to either purchase or enjoy as part of Membership.
Wonderful things many people need at a great price because of the power of
Group Rates such as: Prepaid Legal, Insurance, Prescription drugs, Vision
care, Long Distance, Internet, Travel discounts, Movie discounts...and so
much more.

What's the catch? No catch, I just pay them to do the selling for me.
Aha! What a novel idea in this industry! I can't sell, so I let people
who have a God given talent for and love of selling do it for me. What
could be more simple? But does it really work, you ask? Yep, and they
have a money back guarantee if you're not satisfied. Every single penny I
have put into this business has already come back to me in the form of
advance commissions from people *they* have put under me, and I will begin
to earn true residual income (which is where the mathematical power of this
concept comes in) shortly. I'm "investing" in my future with great
excitement and anticipation. I love it, and love even more being able to
share a true Success Story at long last.

Having a successful home based business has become even more paramount
since I quit my corporate j.o.b. (I'm an MBA) to spend more time with my
beautiful boys. Having a business which runs on autopilot means the most
precious resource I have, Time, is mine to spend with my wonderful family.
I am truly blessed!

Kay's Story:

Phenomonal Herbal Health and Nutritional Company
Creates Need for Distributors

My sister first introduced me to this herbal health and nutritional company
and their products for weight-loss. I went on the products and immediately
started feeling better. Suffering from scoliosis, I had terrible back pain,
so carrying around an extra 35 lbs. was making that worse. I always had to
take a nap every day because I was so exhausted. Well, it's been two years
and I have a new outlook on life now, thanks to these products and the
tremendous results I’ve gotten! I was a stressed out, tired, depressed and
very overweight work-at-home mom! But now my energy level has gone through
the roof, I feel better than ever, and I went from a size twelve to a five
(and I did this in 5-1/2 months)!

This company has products for more than just weight loss. We’ve got
phenomenal products for good health and nutrition, and a complete skin and
hair care line. Our all natural cosmetics were also introduced this month!
There are even aromatherapy oils and soaps, colognes and sun-care items.
This way, you can look as good on the outside as well as you feel on the
inside.

There are many good reasons to get into the herbal health and nutrition
business. For example, did you know that we are a nation that spends almost
one trillion dollars annually on our health care system? Today in America
we have a number of clear diseases that guide the world and guide the health
care today. Diet has a very significant effect on the immune system.
Nutrients in the right balance and combination are basic to functioning and
regulation of the immune system. The body needs over 50 different vitamins,
minerals and other nutrients to replace dead cells, perform its normal
functions, and combat the ravages of preservatives in processed foods,
toxins in soil and water, air pollutants, and stress. Yet the average
American diet is highly deficient!

Holistic treatments and herbal supplements are finally becoming far more
widely accepted now in the United States than ever. Because of this, a
world of opportunities awaits the individual interested in pursuing this
direct sales market as a way of earning a lucrative income on either a
full-time or part-time basis. Independent Distributors are currently needed
to help us take these phenomenal and life changing products around the
globe! In fact, the business opportunity is now available in 42 countries,
and growing!

Sales of nutritional supplements have reached about $4 billion annually and
are growing! Why such interest in these safer, more effective forms of
health alternatives?

* Nutrition is important in preventing disease and weight management.
* There are 1.5 million heart attacks a year in this country. That means
that someone, somewhere in the United States has a heart attack about every
20 seconds and every 1.5 minutes someone dies of one. About 1/3 (500,000)
of this heart attack victims will die suddenly, before even having the
chance for medical intervention.
* Colon Cancer has been known since the seventies to be diet related.
Eating high saturated fat (red meat, etc.) is a main cause.
* Ten years ago, about 50% of adults were overweight. Now, the numbers are
more like 65%. This is 10-20 pounds or more. Moreover, 40% of American
adults are considered medically obese. This means they are 30% above their
ideal body weight.
* Five of the top 10 causes of death are all lifestyle related.

Because we knew these products truly worked and could help people, we
decided to go into the business. It's easy to sell products that you love
and know do more than they say they will. We've set some great goals for
ourselves and our future with our home based herbal health and nutritional
business. Our business is growing daily. It's a simple and fun business
because when you find something of quality in your life, you like to share
it with others. In that we have found our success!

Working initially just part-time from home, my customer account base is
close to 100 and growing. Now that I am working my business full-time, I
can't wait to see where it all takes me. The sky is truly the limit with
the income one can earn with this opportunity. For me, it has become my
passion. I love helping others to good health, nutrition and weight loss.

Do you want to become a part of this explosive growth where sales are
projected to be close to five billion by next year? Simply logon to our
website at http://www.1second.com/herbal.htm or call our voice-mail at
1-800-973-5653 (be sure to leave a good time/date to call you back). Or you
can call our home office at (724) 375-0956, reach our FAX at (724)
375-5102. I would love to tell you all about the training and support that
is available to assist you in operating your own highly successful herbal
health and nutrition business.

In good health,

Kay LaRocca
Independent Herbal Health & Nutrition Distributor

Lisa Kling - My story

Hi everyone - I am Lisa Kling, an Independent Demonstrator with The Angel
Company. I teach others to rubberstamp and craft items for their homes at
workshops, craft booths, Mom's groups and Open Houses.

The Angel Company is one of few stamp companies who actually allow - and
encourage - people to stamp for fun and profit at craft shows, bazaars, etc.
This is actually "illegal" with most stamp companies, as their rubberstamps
are copyrighted with use limited to stamping cards, etc. as gifts - but you
may not sell the projects you've made. I chose The Angel Company because
their philosophies match my own - and I love their exclusive stamps! Aside
from TAC stamps, in our catalog there are 18 other popular rubber stamp
companies represented. We sell both mounted and unmounted rubber, and
acrylic block mounting systems. The Angel Company has start-up kits ranging
from just $75, which makes it easy to start your own business! Demonstartors
also receive generous stamp discounts of 30% - 40.%

Running a household with 3 kids (boys who are 8 & 7, and a 2 yr. old
girl...) is always hectic. There's football, school events, Cub Scouts,
Church activities, preschool - you name it, we do it! Although I have been a
stay at home mom since my first child was born, nearly nine years ago, I
made the decision to be a work-at-home Mom three years ago. I knew that I
needed to be around before and after school for my school-age children, and
at the time I had just discovered that I was pregnant with our daughter.
This was the year I had both the older two in school all day - I had planned
to take on a part-time or 3/4 time job to help out. However, I had a couple
scares with that final pregnancy, and my son was diagnosed with asthma which
needed extra attention at that time - there was no way I could go to work
without sacrificing a lot of things I cared about.

One day, a close friend invited me to a rubberstamp party at her home saying
"Lisa - don't get in to this! You'll like it too much! But come to my party
anyway... So I did like it way too much, and yes - I was hooked! As I
watched the lady giving the demonstration, I was envious because she was
standing up there having a terrific time doing something she loved - and
getting paid for it! I found out that she made about $95 that night in a 2
hour time slot, had *fun* and received 30% - 40% off her own personal stamp
purchases. So I decided (with little to no stamping experience at the time)
that this was the thing for me. I signed up, and couldn't keep up with my
datings - locally rubberstamping is very big! I am still at home, still
stamping and love what I do. If I have to work (as opposed to winning the
Lottery!), I want to enjoy my job and not dread leaving my family when I'm
working. I set my own hours, my own pace, and have a chance to earn
commissions for a job well done if I so choose. I enjoy going to workshops,
and the easy camraderie shared by the women I meet. I have made so many new
friends, and learned so much: even more, I have 'grown' as a person. Who
could ask for anything more!

The biggest plus to my job is the fact that The Angel Company is a newer
company, and there is so much potential for growth! The market is not
saturated with our products: it is a fresh, new idea..... and rubber
stampers always want more! If you have questions about The Angel Company, or
would like to receive demonstrator info. please contact me! You can also see

Kelli's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi,
My name is Kelli Cranmer. I love to read about all the Mom's out there who
are committed to their children! I am a full time RN and have been searching
for a home business for years. I have gotten involved in several and lost a
lot of time and money.
I decided to find something to sell that I love to buy. I searched the
internet for several days looking for a company that specialized in candles
and accessories. Because the name of the company can not be placed in a
personal ad, it was not easy to find. But I did not give up! I am so
thankful I didn't!!!
I have never gotten involved in anything that didn't cost money up front,
until this!!!! The company sent me a kit first and I earned the money to pay
for it!!! Nobody does that!!!!! I continue to be amazed at all the bonuses
and gifts I receive! The more I find out - the more I know I made the right
decision!~
I love what I do. I do home parties and book sales. The stuff is so
beautiful, it sells itself. I have never been shown such appreciation by
anyone I have worked with or for, as I am in this business!
I just started in August and I will be cutting back my full time job to
flexi on October 1st. I also have 3 children and a disabled husband that I
need to be home for. I am truly Blessed>I found my future!!!
If anyone is interested in selling candles and accessories please e-mail me
ritz@...
P.S. My husband suffers from head trauma-if anyone out there is familiar
with this life changing challenge -please e-mail me.
                                                                   Thank You
Tiffany's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I''m the party mommy. That is what my daughters friends tell her. I am a
mother to three beautiful girls, Wendy is 11, Michaela is 2, and Sierra is
10
months. I have always been a career mom. I had Wendy at age 15 and have
worked ever since to try to support us. I am an accountant but last year at
8 months pregnant with the third one, career mommy quit and just mommy
started. I decided to stay home and just be mommy for a while. In January,
I started my own bookkeeping business at home. Tax season was ok but after
April, I only had 2 regular bookkeeping clients. Not enough. I also found
out when you are the one totally responsible for someone's financial
records,
it is not as fun anymore. Before, I did it and passed it on to the Chief
Financial Officer who took the credit and blame. Last summer while looking
for ideas for my girls birthdays (I am a big party thrower), I found
1-800-PartyShop. It is a direct sales company that specializes in theme
parties in a box delivered to your door in 3-5 business. They have over 100
themes and color coordinate everything, from the plates to the balloons.
For
one price, you get 2 sizes plates, napkins, cups, invitations, tablecover, 3
rolls of crepe, 3 rolls of ribbon, and 18 balloons in 3 different colors. I
was thrilled. I am not a salesperson, I hate rejection and confrontation,
but I thought why not try it and use my discount on our parties. I had not
even seen a catalog! I signed up the next day, paid the $150 for my starter
kit(other kits available), waited for my kit and hoped that I hadn't made a
mistake. I didn't. It didn't happen over night. I gave catalogs to
everyone and advertised on the internet. I even paid $500 for a supposedly
big list of people who want these products. Big mistake! My sponsor told
me
to advertise free or cheap but I thought if $15 got me 5 responses that $500
would get alot of responses. Never again will I do that. I got 1 response.
We have a program on the internet called Now that we can check our sales
right away. Everyday I am there saying "oh my god". What if I really could
sale, think of all the possiblities. I know have several consultant under
me
and they are making more money than I am. Most of these women came to me,
no
me after them. Everyone loves the products. There is nothing like it
anywhere. I know how the last two statements sound but it is really true.
I
can send a catalog to anyone who would like to party for a living. I have
expanded into party planning also but only do about 1 a month. If you would
like to learn more or would just like a catalog for your next event, please
check out my website at www.1800partyconsultant.com/5792 or email me at
Tiffany.5792@... . My daughters even help me, atleast
the older two. I take them everywhere. I am not making what I was as an
accountant, but I have just begun and now I don't have childcare costs,
business clothes, the commute and all the other wonderful corporate
expenses.
My commission checks keep getting bigger. The last one was double the one
before that. I am able to spend more time with my girls than I ever hoped
or
maybe wanted, I am even decorating Wendy's class for the holiday's.

Hedy's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whimzzz - Fun Coats for Kids began when I became frustrated with the
selection available in children's coats. I had always preferred "dressier"
styles in solid colors, yet wanted them to be warm and something that could
be worn every day. I also wanted a hat and mittens to match. Seemed simple
enough to me, but I was running all over town to no avail! I found far less
available for boys after my son was born, especially since the "sport" motif
wasn't my cup of tea. Unfortunately, the market was saturated with ski
jacket style coats in prints that clashed with most of her clothing. My hunt
for the perfect fleece was on, and I soon located Malden Mills at
www.polartec.com, my fabric supplier.
I got to work on an A-line style coat in an every day length, with large,
fun flowers dressing up the coat. The coat was a solid plum on the outside,
with a wonderfully warm light beige shearling on the inside. And, of course,
a hat and mittens to match. You can see the Winter coat here
http://www.whimzzz.com/magnolias.htm.
Friends and relatives asked me to make one for their child and as gifts.
Everywhere we went, people stopped and asked where we got her coat, hat and
mittens. Whimzzz - Fun Coats for Kids! was launched!
Coming up with new styles and ideas, and adding other accessories like
blankets, jumpers, skirts and pants, all of wonderful Polartec fleece, is
just so much fun! I had wanted an at-home business that worked with staying
home with my children, Kayla (5) and Jakob (20 months), but found all the
others required babysitters to visit with clients. Now, they go with me when
I drop off Whimzzz coats at local stores, or when I run into the post office
to ship them out! My products are available online, in 20 different colors,
in styles for boys and girls from infant through size 10 - and I love to
come up with new ones! Lots of custom options to choose from such as buttons
or zipper, and lots of accessories like Blossombands, Blossom Hat, So Cool
Hat, Snow Blossom Hat, Scarf, Mittens, and Blankets in Crib and Child size.
There are currently 6 different coat styles: Dapper Little Man, I'm So Cool,
Magnolias in Bloom, Coming Up Roses, Ladybugs in the Garden, and Flower
Power, with more to come!
I wanted this opportunity to be available to other moms, and decided to
offer Home Party Sales. Within days of listing the information on my
website, I had inquiries! Moms get to buy coats for their kids to wear and
have walking little models of their own business! After all, it's how I
started! And their kids can model AT the parties if they'd like!
Marybeth Henry's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About a year after my oldest child was born, I decided to start my own
home business selling Bible Art and gift baskets. I was already a SAHM,
but I wanted to help with the bills. Let me tell you, I just ADDED to
the bills. But I was trying. One year later, I met a mom who was a Mary
Kay consultant. I started talking to her because I was hoping we could
refer business to each other, but as she introduced me to the Mary Kay
products, I thought, "Hey, maybe I could use these in my gift baskets!"
Not thinking I would seriously join Mary Kay, I agreed to sit down with
Michelle and her Director, Stephanie, to hear about Mary Kay. I was
amazed by what I learned! Some of the highlights (for me):

* Mary Kay is listed in every edition of "The Top 10 Companies for Women
to Work For" AND "The Top 100 Companies [for anyone] to Work For" (and is
the only cosmetic company and the only direct sales company in either
publication)
* Mary Kay has had the #1 selling skin care and color cosmetic line in
the United States for the past 5 years
* Most important for me: Mary Kay was founded on the principles of God
First, Family Second, Career Third (VERY important, since I stayed home
because I wanted to put my family before my career) and The Golden Rule
* Mary Kay has the largest fleet of company owned cars in the United
States (not just pink Cadillacs but red Grand Ams, pink Grand Prix and
White Jimmy 4x4s, too!)
* Mary Kay offers a 90% buy-back guarantee, so there is no financial risk
for you to become involved.
* Mary kay has NO quotas. This one was also really important to me,
because at the time, I was working with a direct sales company that
required a $100 purchase EVERY MONTH to be considered "active." Well, I
just decided I didn't care if I was considered active or not and only
placed orders when I needed something, but it was such a relief to find a
company that held no requirements for me, because I never was "the sales
type."

So here I was signing up with Mary Kay (and shocked beyond belief that I
was actually doing it). I really thought I would just use it for my gift
basket business -- maybe meet some customers who would be interested in
my baskets and have nice products to put in my baskets. But when I got
my showcase and my first training packet from my Director, I decided I
was going to actually hold a couple classes and see how it went.

And wow! It actually worked for me. I was so shocked. I hated sales,
but in Mary Kay, it's more like playing "make-up" with a bunch of girls
than actually selling. You see, Mary Kay believes very strongly in
letting women try the product and then make informed decisions -- if they
like it, they buy and if they don't like it, that's fine. And since it's
a "disposable" product, I built up a repeat customer base right off the
bat.

Once I found out it really worked, I decided to put a little more time
(and money in inventory) into it. Not even 18 months later, I am working
on earning my first free car (which I should have by December), I'm
helping the family financially, and I have introduced 6 other women (from
all walks of life) to this opportunity. How did I do it? Lots of
different ways:

* I did individual facials to introduce customers to the product
* I asked people to hold classes for me (and got more bookings from my
classes)
* I held classes in my house (so I don't have to go out!)
* I networked with other industries that could use my services:
maternity stores, bridal stores, women's clothing shops
* I handed out literature even when people didn't want to hold classes or
have facials (sometimes people just want to "order from the catalog")
* I placed facial boxes (where people could sign up for free facials) in
public areas and followed up with people who signed up
* I gave away gift baskets and used the entry forms as follow-up options
* I wore my Mary Kay pin everywhere I went and routinely found people who
wanted or needed a new consultant
* I even gave a friend a manicure in a restaurant once and picked up 2
new customers who were watching us!

The really nice part about no quotas and no company requirements is that
it gave me time to get my systems in place and figure out how and when I
would pick up new customers. When I had to go home to spend January with
my family, I didn't have to worry about missing classes or not having
enough sales (and I even had some reorders waiting on my answering
machine when I got home!).

I still do my gift basket business, but now it's much more on the side!
When my customers want gifts, I offer to turn them into baskets, and I
love to share our wonderful products, but in Mary Kay, I found a company
I could work for that I could love!

Laura's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why I chose 1-800-PARTYSHOP
As a mother of a 4 year old and 1 1/2 year old with a
part-time job that I work 3 days a week - spare time
is not something that I have in abundance.  In
addition to that part-time job I also had a home-based
business that I did on the side.  The business, (with
a direct sales company that I won't name here) was
something I started when my first child was born.  It
required me to teach home classes - which, at the
time, was a welcome change of pace from diapers and
midnight feedings!
It became increasingly clear after my second child was
born that being out of the house for home classes and
keeping up with inventory orders was no longer
something that I enjoyed.  I just couldn't keep up
with it.  BUT, I liked having my own business - so I
was reluctant to leave it...until...
A good friend of mine started with 1-800-PARTYSHOP and
told me about it.  What I loved the most was that I
could do much of my business online and that there
were no home classes to teach - all of this meant I
didn't have to leave my home to run my business.
Hmmm...I said.  Then she told me how I don't have to
order inventory, the products are delivered right to
the customer.  Well...NOW my ears perked up!
She sent me a catalog - and I ordered my daughter's
first birthday party from it.  I fell in love with the
quality of the products, the convenience of it and I
was sold!  And that's how I started with
1-800-PARTYSHOP!
Chris's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes people don't recognize what I am doing as a start-from-scratch
business because I am in Direct Sales and I didn't create the company of
which I am affiliated; however, due to the fact that this company is just
starting - and because I decided to join them in the beginning - I do feel
as though I am creating a business for myself and I am helping the company
owners with the start of their business. Many of the policies and programs
which we offer and follow were created by me - and that is why I writing to
you. I would love for others to know that they can pursue their dreams even
if they don't think they can afford to have their own business. My passion
for antiques and decorating with pieces from the past have evolved into a
career that I love and at the same time I am able to help a wonderful
company get established!

When I started with Traditions in January 1999, I ordered a kit and booked a
few home shows thinking that I might "just try this" - I had already been in
Direct Sales for 5 years and I didn't think I would find happiness in that
field of work; however, I found that my few shows quickly became 10 shows
and more! I also found that I was truly happy sharing with others stories
from our country's past as well as items from our history. In a few short
months I had also shared the company with 5 others and have helped them
start their own Traditions businesses. They are building their futures and
sharing with others as well. It is so possible for everyone who has a dream
or passion to do what they love - they either have to create it themselves
or find a company who is able to offer to you what you love to do.

I consider myself a success - I am operating my own business from my home,
while I am able to be here for my children - and I am able to continue to do
the things I love!

No, there is no unique twist to my story. Direct Sales is not always the
easy route to take; however, it is a very affordable way to follow your
dreams.

Thanks for listening,
Chris Whitacre

Deanna's Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was introduced to Herbalife about a year ago by a wonderful friend of
mine.  I listened to what she had to say because I knew she was sincere.  I
was in a really bad place in my life...I was at an all-time high of 210lbs
and I'm only 5' 3".  I was tired and getting more depressed by the day
because life was becoming more and more difficult.  I listened to her -
thinking that she meant well, but knowing that I would be the one that this
wouldn't work for.  We talked off and on for about a year.  She listened to
me complain about my appearance and would gently tell me each time that
Herbalife really does work.
About three months ago I decided to throw caution and skepticism to the wind
and give it a try.  I got on the products and saw results right away.  My
energy level came up dramatically and I could keep up with my three little
boys.  That first month I lost 21lbs and 16inches.  Well, seeing was
believing.  I signed up as a distributor that first month.  The products had
made such a difference in my life - I just had to share it with others.  I
get a chance to help people with this business - really help them
dramatically increase the quality of their lives.  They feel better, they
look better, their self-esteem goes up, they have more energy and if they
want to - they have a business opportunity to help others in the same way.
I truly enjoy what I do and I'm so very glad I had the courage to try.
Being able to work from home means everything to me.  I have three boys, two
of them are special needs.  I can't, or won't leave them with someone while
I go off to work.  I feel they really need me here to take care of them
while they are still little.  I wanted to be able to do something from home,
but just didn't seem to find what I was looking for until I got on the
Herbalife weightloss system.  Working is just that W*O*R*K unless you love
what you do.  I wanted a business that would allow me to help others, not
only with finances, but with getting the "juice of life" back into their
lives.  Herbalife has afforded me that opportunity!  I've also found many
wonderful women over the internet who are also work at home moms.  We've
developed a really close-knit community of support and advice for everyday
living and also our businesses.  Herbalife has been a true blessing for me
and all the lives I've been able to help through it.
church and I went back to school when I was 30 and got my bachelors in Human
Resource Management and Communication; and then continued with my masters in
Organizational Development.
What I began to see was that as a Youth Ed Director, I was focusing on the
needs of everyone else's children; and frankly, my children's needs were not
being met the way I felt they needed to be.   It became apparent when my son
who was in Kindergarten at the time would act up at every church function
(especially the ones I was in charge of) and truly embarrass my hubby and I
with his attention-getting behavior.   His behavior in school was excellent;
and even at home was good!   When I honestly evaluated it; I found that he
was subtly letting me know that his needs weren't being met and the church
work was taking me away from him.
The next year, I found Shaklee through a challenging situation.   I had
taken
him in for a routine checkup and he had deep black under his eyes and very
pale skin color.   The doctor told us that it could be anything from
allergies to a brain tumor; and they needed to put him through some tests.
My friend at the time who had recently started her Shaklee business said
there was a possibility that he could have a nutritional deficiency and
would
I be willing to put him on a nutritional program.   It turned out thankfully
it was allergies and with the help of the supplements and taking him off
dairy as much as possible, he has not missed a day of school since first
grade and he is going into sixth grade!
Later, I began to look at the benefits of Shaklee as a career rather than
just as a customer.   I began to see that it fit into my career goals as a
Wellness Consultant:  wellness for every area of our lives:  physical,
mental, spiritual and in every area of our lives:  our homes, schools, work
places and community!   I eventually plan on 'integrating' my wellness
philosophy into a Wellness Center that offers healing and wellness resources
for every area of our lives.   But for now, I see this as building my first
leg of my business and getting it stable and prosperous to support my future
endeavors.
The blessing is that I am able to be home for my children and bring more
balance and wellness into our lives!   I am able to do most of my work and
appointments during their school schedule; and still be available to them
before and after school.   This has truly brought a feeling of family
well-being!
Today it is so important for families to know there are other choices such
as
a home-based business that can bring more balance and joy while financially
supporting the family as well!   ....   They sure grow up fast right before
our eyes :>)
Creating a product-sales business from scratch can be very exciting and
rewarding. You make the rules. You pick the products. You are in charge.
When I started my business, I marketed personalized children's books
exclusively. I chose the titles, set the pricing, and decided which
marketing avenues to pursue. I also determined when the time was right
for adding other items, such as stuffed animals, which have become a big
part of my business. It was exciting, scary and a huge learning process,
but I was in charge.
However, in building your business, there is one very important thing to
keep in mind - start-up inventory costs. In order to provide superior
customer service, it's wise to have all items in stock before you offer
them for sale thereby ensuring the customer receives their order
quickly. With this in mind, choose your initial product base carefully
and then add to your product selection as capital allows. Using this
guideline you may not be able to add items as quickly as you'd like to
(I know I have some great products waiting in the wings), but you'll
ensure you build your business reputation around high service standards
and satisfied customers.
WRITING LETTERS FROM SANTA
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
by Tammie W. Hardin
http://www.webmoms.com/designsbytammie
designsbytammie@...
Why did I decide to become one of “Santa’s Helpers”?  First of all, I was
already a Work at Home Mom doing desktop publishing and word processing, so
I hoped that experience and equipment were no problem!  Secondly, I was
watching my two-year-old son’s eyes sparkle each time we went shopping and
saw the shiny lights and “Santa Claus trees”!  Could I make a child’s eyes
twinkle like that?  I wanted to give it a try!
ASKING FOR ADVICE
Being a member of the WAHM (http://www.wahm.com) mailing list, I knew I
could turn to those ladies for help!  All I had to do was send out an SOS
and my project was underway!   Advice was received on everything from letter
content to marketing to postmarking.   I learned of the Professional
Association of Santa’s Elves (PASE) and was encouraged to visit their web
site (http://members.aol/santasouth).  I found yet another great group of
people willing to help in any way they could!  The PASE web site contains a
tutorial for people just getting started, many resources for paper, gift
enclosures, and clipart, a message board, and much more.  They also host a
weekly chat on AOL.   I was on my way to becoming a successful elf!
SHOPPING FOR SUPPLIES
It was mid-October so I was ready to get started.  The first thing I did was
go shopping for supplies.  There are lots of resources for Christmas
stationery.  On-line paper suppliers are plentiful; I requested many
catalogs.   Local office supply stores and discount stores offer several
choices.  I looked for at least two types of paper, so letters to siblings
would be unique, and I also wanted Santa’s picture to be on the paper.  I
was a picky elf!   Remember to shop around at the after Christmas sales for
great bargains on Christmas stationery for next season!
Envelopes can be found in red and green.  However, my advice would be to
stay clear of the colored envelopes, especially red.  Red envelopes can slow
down processing at the post office.  Some stationery comes with matching
envelopes.  Another option is to purchase white envelopes and decorate them
with clipart.  I had a color printer and scanner, so this was my choice.  I
simply scanned the image from the stationery, copied it to the envelope
document, and I had a matching set!  Of course, there are many ways to use
clipart or stickers to decorate the envelopes as well.  Different sizes of
envelopes can be used.  I used the regular #10 style, but many elves use 6”
x 9” or even 9” x 12” catalog envelopes.
I hadn’t considered the idea of enclosing gifts until I visited the PASE web
site.  Wouldn’t that increase my product appeal?  My customers would be
getting more for their money.  Oriental Trading Company
(http://www.oriental.com) carries a broad range of small gifts that can be
bought in quantity.  I purchased an assortment of gifts to appeal to several
age groups.  First Christmas ornaments were on clearance, so I stocked up!
Enclosures can also be handmade.  Items that can be created on the computer
are bookmarks, door hangers, coloring pages, and even magnets.  Crocheted or
hand-painted Christmas ornaments would be special!  Envelope size and
postage costs should be taken into consideration when deciding upon
enclosures.  Take a sample envelope, with paper and enclosures, to the local
post office and have it weighed so there are no surprises on deadline day!
DECIDING ON PRICE
What would I charge for these letters?  Prices on the Internet seemed to
range from $3.00 to $6.00, but $5.00 per letter seemed to be a popular rate.
This rate seemed fair, and I would donate $1.00 from each letter to charity.
By donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I felt I would be
helping even more children.  Local charities are popular choices.  Letters
can be done as fund raising events to raise money for preschools, day cares,
and churches.
MARKETING OF PRODUCT
Spread the word!  I designed my brochure as an 8 ½ x 11, front and back
flyer. The front included a description of the product and ordering
information, and the order form was on the back.  I decided on an order
deadline about two weeks prior to Christmas to insure delivery by the
holidays.
Shop around at local copy centers to find the best price for duplication of
the flyer.   After getting 500 copies of my flyer, I hit the road!  I
visited the local day cares and preschools, and they were very helpful in
distributing flyers to the parents.  I also left flyers at local discount
stores, and the rest were distributed to friends and family.
I carried flyers with me in my bag and in my car, so I could have them
available for everyone I met.   Leave flyers at places frequented by parents
and children.  I did not place ads in my local newspapers, because this type
of advertising can be pretty expensive.  I use local newspaper ads for other
business endeavors, but haven’t had much response from them.  Word of mouth
is my cheapest and best marketing tool!
John Cloos, member of the board of directors of PASE, is often quoted to
say, “Market 24/7.”  John is a very successful marketer of his business
endeavors and he suggests, “Santa Letters is a business, and like any
business needs to be marketed.  Marketing means to first determine who your
prospective customers are, then you have to direct your advertising
(flyers/brochures, etc.) to them.  Unfortunately there is no 'one size fits
all' approach to marketing different products, and different areas will all
require a 'unique' approach, but the bottom line is this: Get the word out!
Let people know about you and your product!  Look around, check out
billboards, newspaper ads, flyers in the mail, etc.  Ask yourself, 'How
would that help me sell?' Or how could I do it better?  Marketing is a 24
hour a day, seven days a week project, so remember Market 24/7!”
DECISIONS ABOUT POSTMARKING
I discovered several options when it came time to consider postmarking.
First of all, if letters are prepared well in advance, they can be boxed up
and shipped to “North Pole, Alaska.”  The U. S. Postal Service web site
(http://www.usps.gov) gives complete instructions on how to do this.
Request that the Post Office hand cancel the letters and forward them to the
recipients.
I knew this would make my letters more “authentic,” but I felt uneasy
shipping my letters to Alaska to be postmarked.  What if the children didn’t
receive their letters on time?  I talked with other elves about this
dilemma.  Another option was to buy a rubber stamp with a Santa postmark.
These are available at stamping shops and on-line stamp suppliers.  I
decided to use a postmark graphic available from PASE.   I downloaded the
graphic, changed the Santa face to make it unique, and then copied it
directly into my envelope document.   Just make sure the graphic is printed
well to the left of where the stamp will be placed.   Checking with the
local post office is again a good idea!
WORKING ON LETTERS
Before the first orders start arriving, a lot of preparation needs to be
done.  Remember that personalization is what sells this product, so several
basic letters will be needed.  I wrote three basic letters and then a
special letter for unborn children, first Christmas, and toddlers.  Other
elves are usually willing to share some samples to help get the creative
juices flowing.
I set my letters up as mail merge documents in MS Word.  Of course, any good
word processing program can be used.   After setting up my letters, I placed
them along with all the samples and macros I had gathered into a binder for
quick reference when doing the final personalization.  Again, I wanted
children to feel that Santa had written just to them!
The database for the customers should also be set up ahead of time.  Allow
plenty of time for testing the mail merge procedure.  I used my own family
members to test and practice my letter writing techniques.  If the mail
merging works well, the letters can be composed more smoothly and accurately
once the orders start coming in.  I used Microsoft Access for my database
design.  There are many other good database programs that can be used
efficiently.  Of course, each letter can be written individually without
using a database.  The task is much simpler, however, when using even a
simple mail merging procedure.
The database can also be used to compile mailing lists for potential
customers in the future.  I did a thank you letter and survey to the parents
after Christmas, and will use these names for future mail outs about other
desktop publishing services I offer.  Repeat customers are the best kind!
ARRIVAL OF ORDERS
I was ready to write letters!  My first two orders came in the mail on
November 5!  I didn’t expect to receive many orders before Thanksgiving, but
I averaged from three to five each week until my deadline on December 8.  I
even received nine orders the day after my designated deadline!   Don’t wait
until the last minute to start working on the letters.  I found that working
on six or seven at a time was much easier than letting them accumulate.
ACCOMPLISHMENT OF MISSION
By the end of the season, I had written to 67 children!  This was definitely
the most fun project I have undertaken, and I hope I made some little eyes
sparkle!   One final thought: always remember to do some freebies,
especially for family, friends, and anyone that helps out with the project.
That’s what the season is all about, right?
I consider my Santa Letter business a success!  These techniques and tactics
worked for me, but of course, they are not all inclusive.  Different
techniques may be needed in various areas of the country.  I enjoyed helping
Santa write his letters, and evidently I did a pretty good job.  He gave the
Easter Bunny a good recommendation, and I’ve now become one of his newest
helpers!
