Balanced Grandma

I hesitate to get started writing my story; I've been told I can be
too wordy ;-)  But I don't believe that anything happens by mistake,
there are no accidents, only lessons to be learned, strength and
direction to be gained, so how do you decide what to leave out?

I'm almost 56 years old, not exactly a work at home mom, but I've
worked at home all my life and am a grandmother of 4, mother of 2.

With my story, I want to encourage all women, all work at home
mothers, to look at their lives with "different eyes", to learn to
find purpose and meaning in who they are and what they do.  Perhaps
by choosing a few events to tell out of my own life, they can learn
to consciously weave their lives into their own unique fabric.

Weaving is an especially good metaphor for me, my mother taught me
to knit when I was  11 years old, and about 37 years later a friend
and I went online with our knitting business.  We knit, a friend
built our website.  My partner went offline and knit for bazaars and
consignment stores, but I stayed online for about 5 years, until I
moved from the States here to Nova Scotia, Canada.  It took me
almost 1 1/2 years to get my papers in order, to be a permanent
resident.  Until then, I was unable to work (no Social Insurance
Number), so I started looking around online for ways to make money.
I found out very quickly that it would take a while to learn and
actually start making money, so that fit in with my legal
limitations quite well.  My husband started an SFI business,
and I used their resources alongside him to learn the online
affiliate marketing business.

My husband joined an SFI team that hosted personal websites for its
members, so I jumped in with a html tutor program and learned how to
make website changes for him.  He wrote articles, I posted them to
article directories around the 'net.  I helped him get reciprocal
links to his website.  Together we built a website that came up in
the top ten on Google, Yahoo and MSN for his keywords,
work at home in Canada, home business opportunity in Canada, etc.

Once I was "legal" this past summer, I started my own businesses and
built my own websites from scratch, using Notepad and basic html.
Nothing fancy, but I've learned what it takes to get targeted search
engine traffic.  I decided not to go back into the custom handknits
business; my handknits are truly handknit, not cranked out on a
knitting machine, so there's not much money in it.  I dug deep to
find other passions.

My whole adult life, up until now, has been spent living in rural
areas, close to the earth.  Living off the grid with solar and wind
power, growing a large garden, knitting with natural fibers,
homeschooling children.  A woman friend who was a wise mentor
unexpectedly passed away from cancer, after becoming
increasingly ill and finally bedridden because of multiple chemical
sensitivities.  I think about her every day, miss her, and decided
to try to educate people about safer alternatives to the household
cleaners, personal products, bath products, first aid products, and
cosmetics we use every day. I've been using such products for
decades, as my gray water went out into my orchard, but I realize
that many many people are not aware of the hazards of
toxic chemicals, or the availability of effective alternatives.

    I've developed a website devoted to helping people get started in
affiliate marketing, and have a subdomain there all about the
virtues of tea tree oil.  I've been using tea tree oil for about 10
years, but just recently became affiliated with a tea tree oil-based
product line.  Tea tree oil's antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal
properties make it a wonderful alternative, and I have to say, I'm
in love!

My other passion is my family.  I'm in Canada, they're in the States
except for my husband, some on the west coast, some on the east, and
two of my grandchildren have never met their grandma.  Geez.
Wherever I live in Canada,I will always be an airline trip away from
some of my family.  So my other business includes Travel Rewards,
where with a small monthly activation fee a person can accumulate
monthly discount rewards on airline tickets, hotels,cruises, dining,
luggage, DVD movies, software, and more.  So I've turned my
challenges and hardships into viable home businesses.

My goals are to move from Nova Scotia to B.C. to be close to my
sons.  I want to be able to support my husband and I when he retires
from construction.  I want to have my own home again and the means
to not only live comfortably, but to be able to help others.  Along
the way, it would give me great pleasure and satisfaction to assist
others in making their dreams come true as well.  My
motto is, "I'm as dedicated to your success as you are!"

Internet Radio changed Mom's Life and Business!

Internet Radio changed Kelly McCausey's business and it ended up
changing her life.

In early 2002 Kelly turned to the internet to help her earn some
extra money. She built her first business website to promote a
freelance desktop publishing company that she would be doing from
home to provide some much needed extra cash. Already employed full
time, she just wasn't making enough money to make ends meet. As a
single Mom, Kelly wanted to earn more without sacrificing the amount
of time she had to be home with her son.

Interestingly enough, the only job offers that came her way were not
to do desktop publishing but rather friends and acquaintences asked
her to build them a website or to help with their web graphic needs.
Just a few weeks later Kelly tweaked her website to highlight these
services instead and she soon had a steady flow of clients.

It was in 2003 that she first learned about internet radio. A
longtime audible learner, she searched for programs of interest and
found one that talked often about internet business and
occassionally highlighted a work at home Mom. She devoured the audio
archives and couldn't wait to hear the next episode each week.

She became so enamoured with internet audio that she looked for ways
to incorporate audio with her existing websites, choosing to launch
a short audio newsletter for her work at home Mom directory website,
USAWAHM.com . The newsletter was only five minutes a week and
quickly grew a listenership.

Then the worst happened. The internet radio program that she enjoyed
so much went off the air. After several weeks she realized it wasn't
coming back and search as she might, there were no other programs
out there with similar content. This got her thinking seriously
about how to bring more audio content to the web for other Moms like
her.

With the sponsorship of InternetBasedMoms.com, Kelly launched Work
at Home Moms Talk Radio

in November 2003. An independant internet radio show on a shoestring
budget, the show had over 250 weekly listeners before the end of the
year. When podcasting exploded in fall of 2004, Kelly jumped onto
the podcast wave, further growing her listenership and increasing
her excitement about audio on the web.

Kelly believes that more Moms should launch internet radio programs
and podcasts on a wide range of family friendly topics. She created
a tutorial that shows how it can be done and is forming a network of
programs to help to co-promote one another's shows,The Mom Cast

  and Mom's Radio Network.

WAHM Talk Radio changed the face of Kelly's business. She rarely
accepts design work and has instead developed a large portion of her
income through affiliate marketing. She mentors other work at home
Moms in creating successful online businesses as well.

While Kelly discovered that what you start out with is not always
what you end up with in business, it is important to find something
that you feel passionate about and will enjoy doing over the long
term. Internet business success is cumulative and she feels that she
is just now reaping the true profits from her many hours of hard
work over the years.

How to Sell E-books on Amazon

Many savvy entrepreneurs and writers have discovered a new way to
generate income by selling information products.
These "infopreneurs" are creating new revenue streams by sharing
their expertise via special reports, e-books, audio programs, and
other information products.

Though it can be relatively easy to list an e-book for sale on your
own website, if you want to take your publishing venture to the next
level and make it available on Amazon.com, there are some specific
steps you need to follow.

Amazon requires e-book publishers to utilize the services of their
partner, Lightning Source (LSI ): www.LightningSource.com. LSI is a
publishing company and the exclusive packager of e-books for Amazon.

Prior to registering as a customer with LSI, you have to acquire
your own International Standard Book Number (ISBN). An ISBN is a
unique ten or 13 digit number that is assigned to a book title for a
period of thirty years. Bowker (www.bowker.com) is the governing
agency that issues ISBN numbers which must be purchased in blocks of
10, 100, 1000, or 10,000 for $225, $800, $1,200, and $3,000
respectively. Each application takes ten days to process before the
numbers are issued. If necessary, you can pay an additional fee to
have your application expedited.

Your e-book materials must be fully edited and ready to go since
once you submit, you will be charged for any changes. LSI accepts e-
books in three formats: Adobe Acrobat (PDF), Microsoft Reader (LIT),
and Palm Reader (PDB). The only limitation to the size of an e-book
is that it must be less than 10 Megabytes.

Once your book is formatted and you have obtained your ISBN, you can
register with LSI. The application process requires you to enter
your tax ID or social security number and a valid credit card. The
good news is that the fee for book submission is just $25 and no
other fees are charged unless you need to make changes to your file.
Once registered, you will receive instructions for submitting your e-
book file along with a contract agreement.

You will receive a proof of your file and after you've approved the
final version, LSI will list your title in its catalog and make it
available to large resellers including Amazon.com, Powell's Books,
Ebookmall, Diesel Ebooks, and others.

As the publisher, you set the cover price of your e-book as well as
the wholesale discount price. The wholesale discount must be at
least 25% though most e-book publishers set their discounts at 50-
55% to make it more attractive for retailers to carry it.
Fortunately LSI doesn't take any additional percentage points since
they are compensated by the book dealers. So if you set your retail
price at $20 with a 55% discount, you will be paid $9 every time
your book is purchased. Payments are distributed by LSI on a
quarterly basis.

Once your title is listed with Amazon, you can update the
description, add a graphic image, or post reviews on the book's
listing page. To make changes, display your e-book listing on
Amazon.com and look just below where the graphic image is displayed
(or should be displayed if you don't have one). You should find a
link that says "Publishers: Learn how customers can search inside
this book." Click on the link, type in your Amazon login
information, and you will be taken to list of choices for updating
the contents of your book's page. Amazon will typically update the
changes you submit within a week.

Because LSI's contract is non-exclusive, the author retains all
rights. This means that you can also make your e-book available
directly from a shopping cart on your website or distribute it
through other channels. If you want LSI to provide you the ability
to sell the e-book from your site, you will have to sign up with
their retailer program which can be costly. Instead you might want
to consider using a document distribution package such as the one
provided by Payloadz.com or a shopping cart system with auto-
responders like the one offered by 1ShoppingCart.com.

As with any book that is published, the success of an e-book depends
on the author's marketing efforts. Though the process of acquiring
an ISBN number, formatting your e-book, and submitting it through
LSI may seem tedious, the advantages can be great if you put some
effort into marketing your materials. Imagine the credibility you
can add to your publicity when you are interviewed by a newspaper or
radio station and you can say, "My e-book is available on Amazon!"

How to get a Virtual Assistant business off the ground



The revolution of how businesses operate is an enormous boon to
Virtual Assistants. With more businesses moving into an internet
based atmosphere, the opportunity for growth as a Virtual Assistant
(VA) is exceptional.

Virtual Assistants are modern day Administrative Assistants. Most
often a good VA has the skill sets of a traditional administrative
assistant with the added benefit of being technically web savvy and
often possessing website and graphic design skills, HTML know how
and an understanding of search engine optimization and Internet
marketing.

However, there are many levels to what type of work you could choose
to target as a Virtual Assistant. Many Virtual Assistants provide
virtual customer support for clients while others focus entirely on
data entry work. The options are diverse and plentiful.

So Where to Begin?

Many up and coming VA's get their first assignments from established
Virtual Assistant businesses. So networking with other VA's can be
an essential method of getting a shoe in this business. The obvious
place to begin networking is on forums. Do a Google search
on 'virtual assistant forum' and you will have a good starting point.

When you are networking on forums, try to be an active participant
on the forum. Ask intelligent questions. Share your understanding on
different topics and comment on what other members have said. The
biggest mistake for many women trying to network or promote their
businesses on forums is to give one-liner answers that aren't
thoughtful. I am far more likely to outsource work to a candidate
when I see that they are serious about beginning their business, it
isn't just a whim. And that they are willing to ask questions and
hone their skills.

Build a Website

You really should have a website up for your business. Without one,
your chances to succeed are seriously going to be hindered. There
are several viable options for getting your website started. You can
purchase a template, use a site builder, hire a designer or build
one yourself.

Building a website yourself can seem daunting, but it is likely a
skill you will need to develop in the Virtual Assistant industry and
this will give you some hands on experience. I highly recommend
building your own site.

Once you have your website you can begin promoting it on your
signature in emails and on forums. You can advertise your services
locally and provide your customer with a website address to learn
more about your services. The opportunities for acquiring clients
and networking with other VA's expands tremendously once you have a
professional website presence.

Find Work Online

There are quite a few places now online where you can connect with
prospective clients and bid on jobs that they have. By far the best
place to do this is www.elance.com. Elance has an excellent
reputation and an excellent advertising budget. They draw thousands
of jobs there all the time. There is a fee, but it is well worth the
investment.

Other sources for finding work are: www.craigslist.com,
www.sologig.com, www.homejobstop.com, www.guru.com, and
www.getafreelancer.com. There are really quite a few websites now
that focus on bringing clients and service providers together.

Do a Good Job

When you do land your first gig, do it well. Aim to astound your
client. Be ahead of schedule, respond to their inquiries, and send
them daily updates. Oftentimes first assignments are your best
opportunity for receiving more work. When a business reaches the
point of outsourcing, they are doing well. It is very likely that
pleasing the client with your first assignment can lead to ongoing
work and/or glowing recommendations to their colleagues to use your
services.

Starting a Virtual Assistant business is an innovative, legitimate
way to utilize skills that you have. It is quickly becoming a
popular home business and there is tremendous room in the industry
for growth. It can take some time to sign on your first clients, but
before you know it you will have a full work load and a surprisingly
abundant business doing what you love!

From My Family to Yours

My name is Jen Baird, and I live in Corpus Christi, Texas with my
three children and husband.  I am blessed to have this large family,
working from home around my family's schedule and to be currently
building the house of our dreams, however, my life wasn't anything
like this just three years ago.



I was a single mom of one little girl and living paycheck to
paycheck at a full-time Corporate America job spending most of my
income on rent and daycare.  Plus, my daughter had been chronically
ill since birth with severe allergies and asthma, vomiting phlegm
several times a day, several days a week since birth.  Medicines and
breathing treatments were routine and didn't help much at all.



Like many moms out there, I wanted to find the answers to how I
could spend more time with my child and stop spending all of that
money on daycare and of course how I could make my little girl
well.  I looked for a business I could do at home after work that
would bring me an extra income.  I found a team called Stayin' Home

the same since.



I spent five hours a week, Monday through Friday on my home business

Noelle's Pillows was created by, Noelle, a stay-at-home mom.
What started as a simple eBay business, became a growing,
unique enterprise that is setting trends in Hollywood.
All I wanted was a baby, but what I got was much more than that....

I had hopes and dreams of one day becoming a mother.
Success came finally. I was going to be a mom, but not without a
price.
The price paid would be with my health. Upon labor and delivery of
our son in a hospital, I contracted
a bacterial infection unbeknownst to everyone (doctors included). It
changed my life and almost ended it.
3 1/2 years I went undiagnosed with a phantom illness with symptoms
ranging from acute environmental
allergies (even my home made me sick) to ovarian tumors and MVP -
mitral valve prolapse. I was sentenced to
bed rest with a few "good days" to be had health wise. NOTE: Some
may have MVP all their lives and never
know or feel it's symptoms, others may have a severe case of it and
can feel quite fatigued. It has been known to
correct itself in some instances.
Years of physical and financial burden were draining our family dry.
I needed to figure out how to ease my husband's
sole financial burden even while being sick. I'd tried to work
outside our home only having to quit jobs because I would get ill.
Distraught and discouraged I sat in my son's room and snuggled up
with him and one of his favorite pillows.
It was his Alphabet Letter Pillow.

Just as tears threatened to give way a "light-bulb moment" came upon
me.
I was surrounded by wonderful pillow décor creations that I had made
for his nursery.
I thought that perhaps other moms would enjoy my pillow creations
for their own children and then I remembered that
my mother and I had a swap meet business years ago: "Pillow Talk". I
revived it for the new tech age - thus an eBay
business ensued. My son's sweet face gave me the will to fight my
illness while starting my own business. It quickly
became successful and soon after that, my own on-line business
developed and grew.
Currently, my illness is cured. I was diagnosed with an acute
bacterial infection: klebsiella ozanae that had
ravaged my internal organs and caused many other diseases and
symptoms to develop. After undergoing
intensive rehabilitation to build back my body, I found meaning to
perseverance in every aspect of my life.

All I wanted was a baby, but what I got was my wings. Never give up,
because when you least
expect it, you can get your wings and fly too.

Excited about Life and my Family's Future

I know I am one of the luckiest people in the world. I am getting to
be home for my family and myself. I have been able to homeschool my
children and run our family farm. My husband will soon be able to
quit his full time job and be home with us as well. This is all
because of a group of people, just like me. Moms, dads, aunts,
uncles, students in college, and grandparents who were looking for
something more. A way to work from home at their own pace, be their
own boss, and set their our hours, working around their families
without the hassle of chasing people, selling products, and
collecting money.

This group is the reason I am so excited about life and my family's
future. We are a team called Stayin' Home & Lovin' It. With this
team we are able to achieve our goals and dreams. My dream was to be
home with my children and to homeschool them for their first and
most important years of school.

Six years ago when my son was born, it was just such a gift for us.
It took my husband and I two years to conceive our son. When he was
born I was teaching and found that working at his daycare center was
just perfect. I could see him at any time during the day. Then I
switched to what I thought was another great day care and private
kindergarten. I was so wrong, it opened my eyes to what happens in
daycares. In my prior job, I could not see my son from my area of
the building. With my new center I could not only see him whenever I
chose but could hear him as well, if my door was open. This showed
my that daycare was not up to my standards, I wanted to raise my own
child and be there for his every need. Shortly after this I quit my
job, and we were okay, financially.

We were then blessed again with my beautiful baby girl. Two years
ago we after moving to a new state and building a new home, we
quickly found that I had to return to work to help pay off our
debts.  I went back to teaching private kindergarten, thinking that
my children would be able to be in the same building I was. I
quickly realized that this was not going to work. Our youngest was
child was not handling it well, medically and emotionally, her
doctor told me I had to be home with her. Needless to say, I quit my
job that day and came home. We were in a panic situation, knowing
that we had bills due, and brand new house and no relatives living
any where nearby to help out. I started my search online to look for
something to do from home.

I feel so lucky still today that I answered an ad while online and
found the Stayin' Home & Lovin' It team. My husband and I listened
to all the details and information and got started that same night.
We were living beyond paycheck to paycheck, we used our credit card
to get going, but it has been so worth it.

Today, we are paying down our debt for our brand new home, one we
designed and built ourselves. We have started our dream family farm,
I am homeschooling both of my children and even running our area 4-H
program. I am here for my family 100%.
I can work around their schedule, I never have to get dressed up and
leave my home to do a presentation or go to a meeting. I chose when
I want to work and how I run MY Business. I love those words.

This team has made it possible for me to use my teaching background
to do more than teach, I educate. I help people understand how toxic
chemicals affect them everyday and how they can have a safer,
healthier home and family. It has given me the chance to educate the
area children about 4-H and the multitude of programs they have to
offer, and now I am starting my own non-profit company to educate
people, young and old, about agriculture, and how we can farm and
still care for our environment.

Without this team, my dreams would have been just that, dreams. Now
they are becoming a reality and I am fulfilling my potential for

Work often takes moms away from their children, but a new career
idea actually brings moms and their babies closer while providing a

are seeing the value of teaching their hearing babies to communicate
using baby sign language and this has created a need for baby sign

Researchers tell us that the early years are prime time for

sign language have been shown to have a larger vocabulary when they
do begin to speak and they have scored as much as 12 points higher
on IQ tests in later years.

Most importantly, baby sign language increases trust between parent
and child and decreases frustration for young children who cannot
yet communicate with speech. Even older children love the "secret"
communication that they can have with their parents in even the
quietest of places.

It has also been reported that older siblings who sign with their
baby brother or sister benefit from the early communication and
sibling rivalry is reduced.

Baby Sign Language in Hollywood

In the film "Meet the Fockers," twins and real-life baby signers,
Bradley and Spencer Pickren, play a baby who uses baby sign language
to talk to his grandfather played by Robert De Niro. TV's Debra
Messing (Will and Grace) has taught her young son baby sign language
and has described the joy of baby signing on talk shows such as Live
with Regis and Kelly and The Tonight Show.

All of this media attention has increased interest in baby sign
language and increases the demand for new instructors.

Work at Home Story from Katherine

One day all my dreams will come true.  This is just the Beginning

Until about a year ago I was a preschool art teacher, I really
enjoined working with the children but the management at the school
was unbearable. I found myself wanting my own work at home business
more than ever before.

I have always had a home-based business since the age of twelve. I
have sold everything from ice cream novelties thru a sliding window
in my kitchen to Mary Kay to custom gift baskets.  My ventures over
the years have various degrees of short term success; yet
none of them have ever prospered long-term.  Throughout all of these
ups and downs I always held onto my dream of becoming a wife and
work at home mother.  Just as my hope was slipping away, my true
love entered my life in late 1999 and the following summer we were
married.  Thankfully, my loving spouse has always been very
supportive of my business ventures and my ultimate dream of being a
work at home mother.

Unfortunately for us starting a family was not as easy as we had
hoped.  I have not been able to carry a child to term and we have
had to seek medical assistance that has not yet been successful.
Last spring while home ill one day, I saw Tatouage being
demonstrated on Home Shopping Network.  I knew there had to be
website so I looked into it and to my surprise not only was there a
website but they were looking for consultants to sell their
product.  I instantly was very interested in this exciting

When I returned to work the next day management berated me for being

decision and handed them my resignation.  I now had no other choice,

nor have I regretted leaving the school.

continues to prosper.  I am a member of my local Chamber of Commerce
and a respected member of the business community.   Once are
infertility treatments are successful all my dreams will have come
true.

Crafty Riches- enjoying success as an artist

Part One: Why Consider a Business in the Crafts Market... Who Should?

You are probably much like I was, tired of the 9 to 5 rat race, and
searching for a way to make money from home. At the very least, by
doing something you love to do. You have been considering many
different options and ways of doing this. Now, I am going to tell
you why entering the crafts market is the best way to do this.

Reason #1: You are trying to change careers for a reason. So… for
goodness sakes. Find Something You Like!

I like this saying: "The highest reward we get from work is not what
we get for it, but what we become by it" ....Wendy Craig- Purcell

Because it seems to sum up a lot in one sentence. If we enjoy what
we are doing, we become much happier individuals, and , also much
better at what we do. When we become good artists, we command higher
fees too. You will always get paid better for better work, and you
will enjoy it too! So look at what you like to do, and write it
down. Keep it for part 2, finding your product, and we will go on…….

Reason #1: Anytime you use some one else's products, you will be
selling the same thing other people have to sell. When you create
your own products, you have something unique. Something that no one
else is selling. When you find your market, you also have a
situation in which your market is your own, and they want YOUR
STYLE. You can then build a followingJ

Reason#2: Even if you don't create your products, but sell them to
others that like to do what you like…

"The crafts business is a huge multi billion per year market, but it
is also made up of a lot of niche markets."

This is good news to you! You can pick the specific area that you
like and want to go into, and you will find many many individuals
looking for your type of product. The ones that live and breathe
their passion, and are willing to spend their hard earned money for
your product!

Now, Who should consider entering this very special market?

Only artists? Heck no!

Most people assume you have to have natural talent to become quote,
an artist. The reality is that you need to have an interest. If you
truly have an enjoyment of what you do, and want to take the time to
learn that area, you can become good enough at it, to sell your
stuff! Even those who have natural talent have to practice daily!
The most important part is:


1. Do you have a passion for it?
2. Are you willing to take the time to become good at it?

This is not a get rich quick scheme. This is learning and going into
something you truly enjoy. This will be a lifestyle changing
experience! You need to take the time to learn. Like going to
college. This doesn't mean you can't sell while learning, but it
does mean you have to take TIME to learn and get good, and better!

Then do it!

So next time, in Part #2. I will show you , I will show you how to
pick YOUR perfect product, and finding the niche market for it.
Finding those who Really, Really gotta have your product!

  My name is Carol and; I want to share
my story so this never happens to anyone
you love.

My sister was helping another sister clean
her basement floor from oil spills when
she was heating her home with oil. She
decided to go with the gas company, and;
when they removed her oil burner, a lot
of oil was left on the floor.  My sister being
extremely fussy, decided to clean the
floor with pine sol. I guess because of the
lack of ventiliation in the basement she
wound up with toxic pneumonia and died.
My other sister wound up in
Intensive Care with a lung infection. While
we went to my sister's viewing she could not
go because she was still in the hospital.

Booby Beads

My name is Britt, I am a WAHM of two beautiful girls Marissa (2 1/2)
and McKenna (1). Being a work at home mommy allows me the
opportunity to watch my daughters grow, while making a financial
contribution to my family & having the satisfaction of having an
impact beyond child rearing & homemaking.

I started off with making baby bracelets for memory books and
scrapbooks. I sold several.. but that was just not enough to keep me
excited. One day I was browsing the net and I noticed nursing
necklaces starting to make an entrance.. all I really saw were the
serious crunchy types.. (hemp with pendants) I didn't find too many
with a "FUN" selection! I started to make and sell my nursing
necklaces to my online buddies and since then it's taken off.

We are thrilled to announce that we have added safety clasps and
stronger cording to our product line. Based on customer feedback, we
realized that no matter how safe a product, there is no such thing
as too safe when dealing with young children. As a result, we did
our homework to see what we could do to exceed our already high
safety standards. Safety clasps are disguised as a bead that simply
breaks away if too much pressure is exerted, either by a young child
pulling or in the event that a necklace gets caught, minimizing the
risks associated with necklaces.  Power Pro cording is ten times
stronger than steel and does not have the stretch that standards
cording allow. This prevents beads from shifting & makes the
necklace virtually unbreakable.

Being a mommy that breast fed my first child for 14 months, I wish I
had something to keep her busy. I had bruises form her pinching me,
scratches and my hair pulled. 14 months is a loooong time..It's not
fun! We now cater to the formula fed babies with our Bottle Beads.
Just cause they are formula fed doesn't mean they don't bite,
scratch and pull hair too. They most certainly do!

With all that's been said, I think if you are a mom and you have a
dream... You should "Go for it!" If I can do it.. So can you!! :D

**But please remember to not leave your child unattended with any
type of jewelry with small parts no matter how safe a product is.**

MomsWIN.com started when Ariana Reed-Hager was at home with three
children under the age of 3 and looking for something to help her
family get beyond broke. As a young mom, Ariana didn't seem to have
many options in front of her, and with young children, the options
were even more limited. She decided to enroll in school and buy a
computer so she could do courses on line. While on the Internet, she
looked for home-based business opportunities (as if having three
children and going to school wouldn't keep her busy enough!).

But Ariana wanted something to change. Her husband was a police
officer, earning just $1,300 a month and taking riskier assignments
to try to advance his career. She was plagued with fear that
something would happen on one of his long shifts and he'd be injured-
-or worse. So when someone contacted her about a home business she
listened, very skeptically, to a phone presentation. What did they
have that could change her life?

What she heard made sense. Partner with a company that will do the
customer service work for you-ship the orders, collect the checks,
track all paperwork. All she had to do was refer other customers and
earn a commission. But what made the most sense were the products
she would endorse. Everyday things she was already buying, like
laundry detergent, toothpaste, shampoo, and cleaners, but these
products were all natural, made without chemicals, toxins or other
hazardous ingredients. Suddenly, something clicked! Her oldest son
had struggled with asthma from birth, and now she could see a link
to his breathing problems and the times she had furiously scrubbed
the house.

Baby Bird Productions

My Internet business, Baby Bird Productions, is the outgrowth of
many years of involvement with kids, children's literature and
animals.

It is named Baby Bird Productions in honor of Bucky, a wonderful
pigeon who came to us as an orphaned baby bird, and who spent his
life with my husband Bob and me because of a wing defect that
prevented him from flying and surviving in the wild. Bucky was a
loving and trusting friend, playful and affectionate, and it is his
image which appears on many pages of our website. During the years
that Bob worked for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals we also raised and released many other orphaned
wild birds and animals, such as pigeons, ducks, raccoons, squirrels,
and opossums.

This concern for animals and for encouraging children to be kind to
animals and to each other has played a major role in my career. I
started out with a degree in fine arts and certification as an art
teacher and later returned to school for a Master's degree in
Library Science, with a focus on the study of children's literature.
As a children's librarian I was able to share great stories and
encourage reading skills, to put on puppet shows, and conduct art
and craft projects to help nurture children's creativity, choosing
themes that would also help children develop into caring adults. I
tried to foster cooperation, sharing and compassion for animals. My
library storyhours and skits gradually became more and more
elaborate until I eventually became a professional freelance
storyteller and puppeteer, writing and performing my own stories and
adapting fairy tales from around the world and creating my own
costumes and props. I performed at places such as libraries, private
birthday parties and parks. I even performed at a medieval English
castle and the Royal Parks of London.

In 2000 Bob and I decided to create a website where I could reach a
wider audience by converting my own children's stories into online
picture books, some with animated illustrations. It took us three
and a half years to prepare the site to go live, as I had to first
illustrate my stories on paper and we then had to scan and otherwise
prepare the artwork and text on the computer and then turn them into
finished book pages, in order to complete our first dozen stories.
We also had to create the website itself, plus the free educational
content that we've included on the site.

All of this took a lot of effort and persistence, and we only had
weekends available to work on Baby Bird Productions. We had never
owned a personal computer and had to teach ourselves to use each
software application and to handle the ins and outs of being
webmasters, but we've done everything ourselves and have journeyed
from "How do you turn the computer on ?" to comfortably working
directly in html code.

Since going live at the very end of 2003, our site has grown
dramatically. In addition to offering animated and still picture
children's stories and fairy tales as downloads, we now also have a
shop where our stories can be purchased on CDs and where other items
like T-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball jerseys, caps, mugs, mouse
pads, clocks, fridge magnets, and tote bags are available. They're
all decorated with pictures from our stories so that kids can wear
the clothing while viewing the stories. We also have a baby shop
with baby crawlers, bibs, Teddy bears and more, plus a fine art shop
for framed prints of my drawings of birds and animals. We have also
greatly expanded our free content which provides games and plenty of
activity ideas for children, teacher worksheets on school topics and
tips for parents about the importance of nurturing reading skills
and creativity in their children.

Baby Bird Productions is truly our baby. It embodies everything that
we've aspired to and our hopes to earn our living independently,
100% through our own effort, while doing something that is creative,
fun, limitless in possibilities and that can hopefully have a
positive influence on children.

A Reality Check Is Necessary Before Starting A Home Business

I have helped thousands of people start up their own home
based businesses using the Internet.  Over time, I have come to
recognize two of the most important factors for identifying
people that should NOT start a home based business.

If a prospective entrepreneur says something like...

"I'm broke and need to make some money...fast!"

or,

"I want to start a home business, but I don't want to spend
anything on it until after I start earning some money."

...it is certain that they have not "gotten real" and should not
attempt to start a home business under either of those
conditions.  I refer to them as the "death sentences" for
starting a home based business.

Almost equally important is the need to have realistic economic
expectations when undertaking a home based business.  There is no
magic here, folks.  A home based business provides many rewards
such as working in the comfort of your own home, avoiding a
stressful commute, being your own boss, setting your own hours,
no dress code, etc., etc., but anyone that is also expecting
"instant riches" is sadly mistaken.

There are a tremendous number of home business and work at home
opportunities offered on the Internet.  Many of these are all
hype and try to convince you that you will be making huge amounts
of money in very little time (you know, stuff like..."you will be
making $5,000 per week, and more, in just a few weeks!").  You
should avoid these like the plague...if they were for real
everyone would be doing it.

Study the opportunities carefully and select the home business
opportunity that seems to fit your own particular style or
talents.  What is a good choice for one person may be a very poor
fit for someone else.  The common thread that applies to everyone
is that you must be "for real" (as indicated above) and the
business opportunity itself must be "for real".

In March 2003, our first child Trevor was born. With both of us being
huge baseball fans, having baseball card birth announcements was a
natural for us. However, a search of the Internet turned up empty.
With Terry's job as a web developer for a local college, he had the
creativity and design skills to make the cards himself. When the
cards were complete, we received many compliments on their cuteness
and professional look. A few people even responded that we should
make them professionally. After creating some templates, designing
and coding a website, and purchasing equipment and supplies,
BabyBaseballCards.com was in business. After a move back to Kelly's
home state of Wyoming, Terry is a stay-at-home dad who teaches
computer classes online, designs and produces the Baby Baseball
Cards, while Kelly works outside the home as an Occupational
Therapist in the school setting. She also helps with the packing and
shipping of orders.

With BabyBaseballCards.com growing, Terry and a high school classmate
Jay Nelson (who owns and operates www.toyboxes.com) combined their
time and skills to create a new baby website - www.YeahBaby.com.
Their objective was to create the most extensive baby names database
on the Internet. In addition to having over 20,000 unique baby names,
several different search criteria and a list of celebrities which
share your child's name, the site contains a number of fun and
informational articles. Terry is the director of database,
programming, and content, while Jay acts as the director of design,
SEO, and marketing. The site launched in August 2004.

Our Business Story:
The Rosemary Company

Having worked in the corporate world for many, many years, I longed
for a business where I could work at home. Although my children are
grown, the pace of having to dress for work, drive a distance and put
up with the corporate culture, just didn't appeal anymore. The
Rosemary Company, http://www.rosemarycompany.com was born when I was
a Hospice volunteer and I discovered the meaning behind the herb
rosemary.

Rosemary is the symbol of remembrance and has associated traditions
that date back centuries. Working with Hospice patients taught me
that the families needed some symbolic way to honor the memory of
their loved ones. Rosemary was also used for weddings, so I decided
to create two rosemary sachet packets, one for memorial purposes and
one for weddings. A neighbor who wanted to be a stay at home Mom,
decided to join me, and we started the company in 1995, just as the
internet was becoming a popular medium.

One thing then led to another. Our wedding customers wanted more
products, and then later asked about baby ideas. We kept adding and
adding until now our site covers all of the special occasions in
life, from cradle to grave. Many of our suppliers are stay at home
Moms who sell us personalized items like tea, coffee, candy and
magnets.

Two and a half years ago we moved from my basement to a commercial
location. Our customers include movie stars, The Disney Corporation
and other businesses. We soon outgrew our new location and in July
built and moved into an 8,000 square foot building. We now have 11
employees (all women except one - my husband!) and have a wonderful,
creative, thriving business. Ellen, my partner, now has grown
children and runs the day to day business.

I still work out of my home and go to Florida in the winter, where I
also maintain a home office. My part of the business allows me to be
anywhere, as I do product development, internet business and
supervise customer service. I love what I do and now, at 58 years
old, I am getting ready to start another business! So, all women who
want to work from home have much to look forward to, even as their
children age.

thrilled to receive a package in the mail. There were kids all over
the world who never receive mail, much less a fun package filled with
materials to spark their creativity. Creative Kids at Home was born.

Christine had enjoyed many different crafts in her own childhood
including knitting, crocheting, ceramics, and needlepoint. While she
may feel her artistic talents are limited, she enjoyed being able to
create a finished product she could be proud of. She loved the idea
of developing a business that would encourage other children to share
that same feeling of accomplishment, and give them an opportunity to
learn that you don't need to be artistic to be creative.

Owning her own company, was not entirely a new experience. She and
her husband co-own S&N Enterprises Inc., a computer and information
consulting business. Her background also includes an MBA with a
course in entrepreneurship. While her education may help in writing a
good business plan, for this company, the critics that count are kids.

The mission of Creative Kids at Home is to encourage kids to have fun
and be creative. Christine loves to hear from parents and kids about
their reactions. The kids are excited when they find a package in the
mail. The parents enjoy watching their kids busily creating their
newest project.

One of her goals is to make gift giving easy while still being able
to give fun and unique presents. A mom was trying to find a gift for
her teenage daughters that would remind them of their favourite
childhood Christmas. The Super Surprise Box was very similar to a
craft box they had received 10 years earlier. Their mom had searched
both in local stores and on the internet. She was thrilled when she
found a solution to her gift dilemma for her.

How Two Quarrelling Kids Helped Invent the Better Behavior
Wheel

When David was nine and Laura was twelve, the battles
started.

Prior to that, they got along great. Laura was always
protective of her little brother, and he in turn, doted on
her.

Perhaps it was about needing space, asserting
independence.whatever the reason, it drove my husband and I
crazy. It would start over the tiniest of excuses. One
minute the house would be quiet, and the next they'd be
shouting at one another.

"Mom, Laura won't give my CD back!"

"It's not yours. It's mine!"

"No it isn't. I got it for Christmas!"

"No you didn't. I did!"

And on and on it would go. Until, finally, one of us would
have to intervene. And there would be a truce.sort of. At
least until the next blowup.

We hated the atmosphere of tension that would invariably
follow these exchanges. Our once happy home was being turned
into a war zone, and it felt like there were land mines
scattered beneath our feet.

One night, in desperation, we had a conference. We called
the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting
their behavior was. We asked them for suggestions on how we
could restore peace and serenity back into the family.

Off to their rooms

Well, we didn't resolve anything on the spot. We sent them
to their rooms with instructions to each come up with a half
dozen appropriate consequences that we could impose the next
time they had a fight.

The following day we were presented with a list of
consequences from each. Some even looked pretty good.
Examples: Clean the other person's room; Do dishes for the
other person; Make the other person's bed for a week; Lend
your favorite CD or game to the other person for a week;
Make a list of 10 good things about the other person; Hug
and make up..

We decided to arrange the consequences around the perimeter
of a board, and then we attached a spinner in the middle.
When you gave it a spin, the spinner would eventually stop
and point to one of the consequences. Then we hung the board
up in the kitchen, in plain sight. We crossed our fingers,
and waited.

And waited.

It was amazing. Just the presence of the board, hanging on
our kitchen wall, had an instant calming effect on the
atmosphere in our home. Occasionally we'd see one of the
kids standing in front of the board, idly flicking the
spinner, checking it out. But the fighting had stopped.

Well not forever. It took about ten days before they forgot
about the board and peace was shattered by another battle.

We were ready.

We called them both into the kitchen, took the board down
off the wall, and placed it on the table. They knew what
they had to do. How could they refuse? They chose the
consequences. They practically invented the board. It landed
on the most dreaded consequence of all: Hug and make up!

The tension was broken as they awkwardly gave each other a
hug, mumbling apologies. We all had a good laugh, and life
resumed.

Maybe we're on to something

Wow, we thought days later when there'd been no further
skirmishes.if this thing works so well for arguing, what
about some of the other issues that we seemed to be always
struggling with. Wasting electricity, for example. It seemed
like the kids were always leaving the lights on when they
left a room. Or they'd leave the TV on when they went to
bed. Or they'd take half hour showers. Why not make another
wheel with consequences related to wasting electricity?

Well, eventually and inevitably, we ended up making
consequences to cover seven different issues, or themes.
Excessive Arguing was joined by A Job Poorly Done, Leaving
the Lights On, Stretching the Truth, Taking Without Asking,
Talking Back, and Not Putting Things Back.

And then, because we felt that extra good behavior should be
recognized, we added another theme called Just Desserts,
consisting of rewards.

We called it The Better Behavior Wheel.

It has worked beyond our wildest expectations.

In the past we'd often let behavior slide.

"David.it's 8:30. Get the dishes done."

"I know." From downstairs where he's watching TV.

"David. It's 9:00. Get these dishes done right now!"

"I know."

Until we'd get angry. And then the consequences would end up
being out of proportion to the infraction. And blood
pressure would rise, and anger would reign.

"DAVID.GET YOUR BUTT UP HERE RIGHT THIS MINUTE AND GET THOSE
DISHES DONE, AND YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT GOING CAMPING THIS
WEEKEND!!!"

But with the wheel.

"David.it's 8:15.you haven't started the dishes yet. I'm
afraid we'll have to spin the wheel."

"But, Mom."

"I'm sorry, Dear. It's really not up to me. Those are the
rules we all agreed on. Gee, I hope you don't land on a
really bad consequence."

The amazing thing is.we're no longer the bad guys. We can
actually root for the kids as they drag themselves up to the
wheel. It's no longer an us against them issue. It's the
wheel that they have to answer to.

But the greatest thing of all.we hardly ever have to use the
wheel. It hangs on the kitchen wall, acting as a watchdog
and reminder. It's mere presence has worked miracles.

We want one too

After sharing our experience with our friends, and
demonstrating the wheel to them, we have received widespread
encouragement to make them on a commercial basis. Ultimately
we thought, why not? It's a great product. We know it works.
If it can help others the way it has helped us, it almost
seemed a shame not to make them.

We even made a Virtual Wheel - a download version that can
be played on the computer. We give this out free with each
order so the customer can begin spinning right away while
she's waiting for her order to arrive.

It's been four years since we had to send them to their
rooms, but David and Laura get along great these days.
They've both turned into wonderful teens, and we'd like to
think that the Wheel shares a huge portion of the credit for
that.

My son had always been a great eater, eating fruits, veggies, meats,
and everything I cooked. One day when he was about 2 years old, I
suddenly realized that my pantry and fridge looked like processed
food heaven. I also realized that I was making him a separate meal
for dinner because he no longer ate what I cooked. I was determined
not to have a picky eater and so I began searching for recipes that
were healthy but somewhat disguised the veggies or added more texture
to the foods.

My friends began to ask me how I managed to get my son to try so many
different foods, and I started to share with them some of my recipes
and other tips. I had tried several WAH "programs" in the past and
was unsuccessful. Between my determination to not have a picky eater
and my determination to find a way to earn money working at home,
MunchkinMenus.com was born.

As a mom and a WAHM, I know it's important for moms to be able to
cook healthy, good tasting, and quick dinners for their families. I
also know the importance of saving money. According to a recent
study, over 25% of dinners families consume are pre-frozen meals.
Sure, it's convenient, but we pay a premium for that convenience. My
goal is to bring families back to the dinner table with homemade
dinners that are easy, delicious, and quick - helping families save
time and money.


I provide custom menu plans for families, even those with picky
eaters. My customers fill out a short questionnaire relating to their
current eating habits, their likes and dislikes and I develop dinner
menus which include a main dish, side dish, and vegetable. They can
choose from 10, 20, or 30 custom menu plans. I'm like a personal chef
without actually cooking the meals and without the high prices that
personal chefs charge. I've also written a cookbook with over 100
easy, delicious recipes.

For most children, being a picky eater is just another one of those
stages that seem impossible to get through. If I can help other
families, it makes me feel good.

There are so many moms today who work at home or who want to work at
home to spend more time with their children. My philosophy is that
they're only young once and I didn't want to miss out on that. I am
greatful that my husband's income affords me the opportunity to stay
home with our son. For moms who want to work at home, my advice is to
do something you enjoy! Find your passion and turn it into your
business. Be patient. Just like raising a child, running your own
business requires patience too.

I always tell people that my company, All About Baby®, started out
with a mistake.

It all began shortly after I gave birth to my daughter Katherine in
1993. I ordered a personalized newborn birthday scroll by mail order.
When the item arrived some weeks later, I was greatly disappointed
with the quality and appearance of the product.

I was expecting a beautiful keepsake, but the paper and design both
looked cheap. Additionally, the current event information was poorly
written and not completely accurate.

Even worse was the fact that some of the personalized information on
the certificate was wrong. Since there was no phone number listed on
any of the enclosed literature, I couldn't even call them to ask for
a corrected scroll. I'd be forced to write to the company and hope
for some type of response.

My first reaction was that buying the scroll had been a mistake. That
night I couldn't go to sleep. I kept thinking that the concept was a
good one, but the finished product had not lived up to my
expectations. During my pregnancy, I had been searching for a new
career path, and it suddenly came to me: I could create a more
attractive certificate, and I certainly could provide better customer
service.

The very next day, I began talking to friends and showing them the
product idea. Everyone was very encouraging. Next, I did some
informal "focus groups" with new mothers that I knew and came to the
conclusion that indeed there was a market niche that wasn't being
filled.

The research and development process took over 18 months, but finally
All About Baby® at http://www.allbaby.com was launched out of my
family room in early 1995. Not surprisingly, the first All About
Baby® product was a charming, personalized birthday scroll, called
Babyography®.

The last ten years have been challenging -- sometimes exhausting --
but never boring. I've really enjoyed growing the company and
providing quality products and excellent customer service. We now
have over 15,000 customers located across the country. All About Baby
has been featured in a number of magazines, including Parents, In
Style, Woman's World, The Star, Twins, Pregnancy and Sesame Street
Parents. Recently, USA Today interviewed me for a story that was
written for their "Money" section on the state of the economy. It was
pretty exciting to be quoted in this national newspaper.

The publicity and recognition have been wonderful, but running a
business is not always glamorous. The day-to-day challenges can be
stressful.

It's important to be a self-starter with a 'can-do' attitude. You
have to be able to roll with the ups and downs of operating a
business and not get discouraged. Working alone or with a few
employees can also be isolating, so it is very important to have a
strong support network. You must be the type of person who can think
big and work small. In other words, you have to have the long-range
vision to see where you want your company in five or ten years, and
you have to have the skills and determination to make that happen one
step at a time.

I love the fact that I can blend my work and family commitments
together.

My daughter, Katie, is now 11 years old and in the sixth grade. She
sometimes helps me out on weekends doing small office tasks such as
stamping letters, proofing orders or folding flyers.

My husband also assists me with financial issues and when I just need
someone to listen to my ideas.

Since I don't have to punch a clock, I can work until early afternoon
and then pick Katie up from school each day. I also volunteer, take
part in class field trips, sometimes work out during the day, run
household errands and always be there to help with homework.

Late afternoons and evenings, I'm usually back in the office for an
hour returning phone calls and checking email.

On weekends, I always try to commit a few hours to projects and ideas
that will expand my business. A few years ago, I began adding more
gift items to the All About Baby® line, and the company now features
a wide range of gift items for infants, toddlers and children. We

What THEY Don't Tell You! (About Home Business)

I know what you're thinking....... "Oh great, another conspiracy
theory".  Hardly.  As I wade further into the realm of working
at home I notice a few things that nobody bothered to tell me
when I first started.  Do I think it's a conspiracy? Not at all.
I believe that in the world of online business there are some
things that are simply assumed......

The purpose of this article is to help out anyone and everyone
looking to start working from home.  Here is my list of
everything THEY don't tell you when you first start your online
experience.


1.  If you want to be successful you will have to put in more
     than two hours per week.

     As they start most people have it in their heads that they
     will be making $100,000 within their first 4 1/2 months
     working just 2 or 3 hours per week.  This simply isn't the
     case.  Use your sense of reason....... can you build a
     successful business in 2-3 hours?  Most people that do well
     in home business work at it as if it were a second job.  It
     becomes an obsession.  After all, it's YOUR business now.
     Have some pride in it and be willing to put in the effort
     it takes to make it.


2.  Comfort comes first.

     Get a desk, a comfy chair, an ergonomic keyboard, a headset
     for your telephone etc.  While all of this may seem like
     just luxuries at first soon enough they will be what
     prevents you from quitting.  How horrible would it be to
     not want to work on your business simply because your chair
     is uncomfortable and you just cant stand to sit in it for
     another minute?  Make sure you are comfortable with your
     workspace.  If you aren't you may find yourself avoiding
     your business!


3.  Eliminate Distractions

     Personally, I can't accomplish anything without music
     playing.  It helps me focus.  But a put TV anywhere near
     me and I won't get anything done at all.  A good friend of
     mine is the complete opposite!  So figure out what distracts
     you and get rid of it! (at least while you're trying to
     work).  It's hard enough working on your business without
     "Judge Judy" or "The Simpsons" trying to distract you as
     well.  I also turn off all my messenger services like Yahoo
     and AOL when I want to get some work done.  The last thing
     I need when I'm trying to work is some kid asking me......
     "Hey.... M/F?"  I'll turn them on if I'm just answering
     e-mail or something simple....... but if it involves any
     amount of real thought I would rather avoid the distraction.


4.  Yes, you DO need your own website.

     I know just about every affiliate program out there will
     tell you that they provide "free websites!".  Just to clear
     the water a bit...... these sites are about as useless as a
     refrigerator in the arctic.  It doesn't matter whether you
     choose to build yourself on your own or have someone build
     it for you ...... but get something!  There are plenty of
     free website services out there if you are worried about
     price.  I know several people that have done very well with
     just a free website from geocities or something of the sort.
     I would suggest getting a real site once you are making
     some money though....... simply because it looks more
     professional.


5.  Get Help

     Everyone wants to have something that they built all by
     themselves.  Unfortunately, pride seems to be a big factor
     in home business failure.  There are hundreds, if not
     thousands, of people that are making a living online
     already.  Why try to figure everything out by yourself?
     Would you rather break down and ask someone "What's an
     autoresponder?"........... or continue to work at that
     job you hate forever.  I've always thought is was a simple
     choice!  Never be afraid to ask a question........ and if
     you have some........go to this site and join the forum to
     ask about what you need to know!

6.  Honesty Helps

     With as many scams as there are on the internet these days
     it's hard to believe that there are still honest people out
     there.  There are still ways to make money by being honest.
     In the long run it will help you out more than trying to
     cheat a few people out of money right now.  Don't cheat.
     Don't lie.  Don't steal.  You'd think it would be simple
     but all too many people choose the "other" way just to make
     a quick dollar.  Sometimes being honest actually will slow
     your business at first....... but in the long run you will
     do much better than all the cheaters out there!


As you can see, none of these are anything that I would say are
really "hidden" from people.  They are not mentioned very often
however.  If you're looking for the "secret" to making a living
online there are many technical things that you will eventually
learn.  Hopefully these tips will help you sort out the
psychological aspects of home business that can make you
a success.

(ARA) - Many people dream of a career change, but job forecasts can
be disheartening, especially if you are looking for a fun, flexible
career that allows time for family obligations. But one industry is
booming -- travel. Right now business is growing for travel
professionals. And that includes tour directors.

"A lot of people think tour directing means spending months away from
home in far off places. That isn't always the case," says Ted Bravos,
founder of the International Tour Management Institute (ITMI), a
state-certified school for training professional tour directors and
guides. "Many jobs are available for tour directors in cities across
the U.S."

Women in particular are reaping the benefits of travel industry
opportunities. As tour directors, schedules can be custom tailored to
coincide with summer vacations, weekends, or child-care hours.

"In many industries, women feel that taking time for family can
hinder their advancement and income potential. That isn't the case
for tour directors," says Bravos, who has been training tour
professionals for more than 25 years. "You can take time off for
raising a family or pursue other professional interests, and pick
back up later. For people who love to travel, it's a great way to
share that passion with others while creating a personally rewarding
career."

It can be lucrative as well. Tour directors receive approximately
$150 to $200 per day, plus all expenses. After becoming certified,
tour directors can work as much or as little as they choose. "Many
students, especially women, come to our classes worried that they
don't have enough work experience to make a viable income," says
Bravos. "Perhaps they've been out of the work force for a while, or
they are interested in changing careers. But tour directors don't
face that kind of glass ceiling, because where and how much a tour
director works is completely up to them."

"There are so many different ways to create a travel career," says
tour director and ITMI graduate Joemy Wilson. "A tour director can
travel around the world or stay at home. They can work full-time or
as little as they want. It's perfect for people who enjoy meeting new
people and learning about new places." Wilson began leading tours in
New England and has since taken groups to Europe and is currently
training to bring travelers to Russia.

Wilson describes her job akin to being a party host. She makes sure
everyone is having a good time and getting the most out of their
travel experience by working to keep everything running
smoothly. "This industry really values life experience, because the
most important traits of a good tour director -- personable,
responsible, curious -- can't be taught from books. I've been an
instructor for ITMI and there has been a surge of women in their 50s
and 60s taking our classes. Being a tour director allows these women
to travel the world for free and gives them the flexibility to work
when they choose. And ITMI gives its students such a head start in
the business because of its wide network of contacts in the
industry."
