Greetings:

I've been reading a lot about models of business organization that are
not what we would call strictly "worker-ownership." I've recently
become acquainted with a concept called Sociocracy. It was developed in
The Netherlands over 30 years ago and is now being brought to the US.
Here is the website:

"Activism Illustrated
Inkworks Press celebrates a quarter century of political posters, the
key to making a visual impact before the Internet's rise
By Jen Angel

Today, the first step of a rising activist group is throwing up a
website, but a generation ago the visual impact of a group was
measured by its posters.

Inkworks Press, a collectively run print shop in Berkeley, Calif., was
at the forefront of this visual culture. For its 25th anniversary,
Inkworks collected the best of its output into a book celebrating the
hundreds of political posters it has printed since its founding in
1974. The project took nearly a decade, but the result, Visions of
Peace & Justice, was released this spring. The full-color, 150-page
book reprints hundreds of posters, many as full-page illustrations."

Regarding the spam problem, I moderate several yahoogroups and I have them set up so that when a new member joins, his or her messages are moderated.  That means that the list owner/moderator sees them first.  He or she can then decide to send them to the group or not.  Once someone proves themselves to not be a spammer, I then set their posting privileges to whatever it is for the rest of the list.  To do this you go to Management, then Messages, then scroll down to posting and archives and click on Moderation.  One of the choices under that is "new members".  That's the one you want.

Greetings:

I hope that some of you are going to attend the Eastern Conference on
Worker Democracy. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend due to
personal obligations that I can't put off. It should be a great event.

Yahoo groups is experiencing what I can "hit and run" SPAM. This is
where a spammer joins a group, posts their spam and then deletes
themselves and the message from the group page. They get their spam out
and we can't ban them. I'm not sure what to do about this.

Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Cheers,
William

Here is our latest cooperative organizing project. This announcement is being sent around Oklahoma cyberspace today.

Bob Waldrop, Romero House, OKC

SPIN Farming (Small Plot Intensive) originated in Saskatoon, Canada, where some rural farmers decided to move to the city and become urban market gardeners. They presently gross about $50,000/year on 1/2 acre of market garden plots. They don't even have a half acre in a contiguous place, they "rent" about 20 different plots in people's back yards under various "rental" agreements. www.spinfarming.com is their website.

If there is one thing that I have learned in 3-1/2 years as president and general manager of the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, it is that the market for locally and organically grown vegetables is way bigger than the actual production of locally and organically grown vegetables.

I am interested in helping organize one or more worker owned cooperatives who would use the SPIN farming model to develop market gardening businesses in Oklahoma that would grow and sell organic vegetables directly to the public at farmers markets and through the Oklahoma Food Cooperative.

My idea is that initially, this would be a "2nd job" for the participants, a part-time job that in time could grow to be a full-time business. As I have often been heard to say, "We start small or we don't start at all."

As I did when I started the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, I have started a Yahoo discussion group to facilitate that organizing process. If you are interested in becoming an Oklahoma SPIN Farming Cooperator, please subscribe to the discussion and let's get this going. To subscribe, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/okspinfarmcoop/ and click the "join" button.

Please pass this news along to other Oklahoma listservs where people may be interested.

Bob Waldrop, Oklahoma City

Primordial Blooms: Recent Prints by Eni Sibal
April 19 to-May 23, 2007, Stairway Gallery, Kamuning, Quezon City

Primordial Blooms presents Eni Sibal's explorations on the parallelism
between printmaking and gardening through the use of pressed flower
techniques. Her recent works are crafted by integrating traditional
and contemporary printmaking processes specifically digital and
collagraph print techniques. Finely crafted and exquisitely designed,
her prints foreground her fascination with flower arranging and
gardening; synthesis and repetition. Through juxtaposition and
layering of various floral motifs, Eni creates a collection of prints
that exhibit a compositional harmony reflective of her deep sense of
inner tranquility and penchant for detail. Eni explains that "the
synthesis achieved by combining two differently produced (digital and
intaglio) print of the same image results in a richer and more dynamic
monoprint in terms of its composition." An emerging printmaker, Eni
Sibal is a graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman
College of Fine Arts. Primordial Blooms, her first one woman
exhibition, opens on the 19th of April 2007 at the Stairway Gallery,
Kamuning, Quezon City. The show will run until the 21st of May 2007.
For more information, please visit www.stairwaygallery.com or call
(632) 920 1375. Gallery hours are from Monday thru Saturday, 10am to 6pm.

others, bu WOCCU. I hope you will find interest in his request, or
you may direct it to the appropriate address.
This information is available as well on my website here:

I wish he could be develop his project so important the developing
world, and which is done by the people of these countries by
themselves.

Best regards

Zvi

Shalom Zvi
I am sending this mail to inform you about my progress in my
professional assignments, and the situation I have arrived today,
when I am unable to put forward my success and my abilities in
continuing to extension of my software.

I hope that some people around the world who have the means would
join me in this enterprise, which contains a great deal of future
development to my firm and to those who will join me.
Here is the information I would like to ask you to spread around to
help me to be known to future investors who may join me in this very
important occasion:

Dear future partners,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you.

I am a Kenyan citizen by the name Michael Onyango Magani, a Shalom
club member having been at the Institute of Histadrut – Kefar Sava in
1998 for a course in Economic and financial Planning for rural
Development Through Computer Usage, and is a Software Developer for
microfinance and Banking by profession.

Having Combined Knowledge gathered from my Computer Programming and
that of the Institute, I produced a Software that was reviewed by
World bank’s CGAP in 2005.

The software is called SML VISION 2003 & SASA-PRO VISION 2003 and Now
I have produced 2007.

Recently the World Council Of Credit Union (WOCCU) wanted a Software
to be used by all Kenyan Sacco’s and SML VISION 2003 and SASA-PRO
VISION 2003 was found to be suitable for the project except the
Company is not having Enough support for the country wide
implementation and Hence was put as number One in Group B. There are
Four Firms in Group A.

This project is to start in April this year. I am required to get and
train enough support, Have Office and Branches with Telephone lines
as soon as possible for me to be awarded the project which is
sponsored by Melinda & Gates Foundation and is a Multi-million project.

Due to this I require a business Partner that can race about US$
300,000.00 to US$ 450,000.00

The Cost of The Software for Sacco’s below 500 Members is US$ 8,000
Per Sacco and it increases with Membership to about US$ 280,000 per
Sacco. Saccos with Banking pays for banking software SASA-PRO VISION
2007 separate at US$ 8,000 to US$ 300,000. and Separate payments for
ATM and other facilities.

The software is unique because it is fully integrated. Loans, Cash
paid, Refunds, Deceased Refunds, Loan Off-sets, Dividends payments
etc are all integrated into accounting Cashbook, GL, TB, and Balance
Sheet with no repeat in entry.

Also, for SASA-PRO VISION 2007, the foreign Currency is converted
instantly at When a Teller pays or Receives, This means That a Teller
Can receive any Currency whose rate is set by the Manager.

Dear HR/IR Practitioners:

Greetings!

CBAs, LMCs, TQMs are some of the mechanisms where employers and
workers get together to address their many concerns ranging from day
to day activities to the realization of long term needs, vision,
mission and goals of the organization and its members.

While such mechanisms have proven their effectiveness, there is always
the imperative to seek new and more effective mechanisms to further
enhance the capabilities and realize the potentials of both employers
and workers as the prime driving force of Philippine competitiveness,
decent work and economic development. We would like to present
another mechanism, one that may transcend current mechanisms and usher
in a new era in Philippine Industrial Relations. We call this
mechanism "Firm Level Social Partnership".

The seminar fee of NINE HUNDRED PESOS (P900.00) per participant covers
snacks and learning materials. Payment should be made to UP SOLAIR
Foundation - the Center for Labor Education, Advocacy, Research and
Development, Inc. (CLEARED, Inc.) on or before the conduct of the
seminar. For details and confirmation, please call Fina or Eric at

A CALL FOR PAPERS

FOR THE 2ND ASIA-PACIFIC CONGRESS

ON THE THEME:

"REVISIONING GLOBALIZATION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF
COOPERATIVES, TRADE UNIONS AND PEOPLE'S ECONOMIES"
May 15-16, 2008; UPSOLAIR Auditorium

For details, visit our website for the 2008 Asia-Pacific Congress:

        http://2008asiapacificcongress.bravehost.com

Most sincerely,

Rosa Mercado
Conference Coordinator

AN INVITATION

Laying the tracks of a moving train…

The problem is, there is no stopping or turning back. Globalization is
running like a loose train along tracks we have not built, in
directions we have not charted. It is creating deep patterns and
structures that challenge and put to rest our old ways of relating,
thinking and doing. The world of work and economy as we know it has
been redefined by prime
movers, shaken to its very foundation while the players in this drama
are struggling to make sense of it all, trying to grapple with the
parts as they
unfold.

We have conceived this 2nd Asia-Pacific Congress to deal with this
dilemma of globalization. Either we sit back and take the train ride
to nowhere or we help
lay down the tracks of this train as it moves along.

"Revisioning Globalization". This is our clarion call in this 2nd
Asia-Pacific Congress. Cooperatives, trade unions, grassroots
initiatives and people's economies are being called upon to put their
acts, heads and hearts together, to rewrite the script as it happens
and re-create the parts they have always dreamed of.

We invite concerned individuals and parties to take part in this
Congress as a participant or paper presenter. Either way, you will
have an indispensable role to play as we summon our determination to
rethink and re-envision globalization.

Let your voice be heard!
Let your presence be counted!

A CALL FOR PAPERS

FOR THE 2ND ASIA-PACIFIC CONGRESS

ON THE THEME:

"REVISIONING GLOBALIZATION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF
COOPERATIVES, TRADE UNIONS AND PEOPLE'S ECONOMIES"
May 15-16, 2008; UPSOLAIR Auditorium

People's economies all over the world are putting a new perspective to
globalization. This perspective considers the total development of
human beings; relies on the collective strength and resources of
ordinary people to meet their economic, psychological and social
needs; instills a new set of values, discipline and practices and acts
responsibly and
consciously to protect and preserve their environment, history and
culture.

This 2nd Asia-Pacific Congress seeks to redefine and rewrite the
script of globalization from the perspective of cooperatives, trade
unions, grassroots economies and initiatives, known collectively as
people's economies or more popularly, solidarity economies. The new
perspective entails a new way of looking at things, one that is based
on shared values
and meaning; democratic empowerment and participation; broad social
ownership and economic equity; ecological sustainability and community
well-being; responsible
production and conscientious consumption and the use of capital and
labour to further the goal of social and economic justice.

The call-for-papers challenges leaders and advocates from the ranks of
cooperatives, trade unions and grassroots activists, to rethink
globalization in novel and creative ways and help build the economic
infrastructure of the future.

Congress Objectives:

1. To come up with alternative strategies and tools of analysis that
would re-envision development in local areas and in the region by
taking into account its various dimensions: political, social,
economic, cultural, ecological and ethical.

2. To highlight initiatives on alternative ways of arranging
production and economic activities hinged on social justice, equity,

"Employer Labor Experience" April 18, 2007, 1-5 p.m. SOLAIR

CBAs, LMCs, TQMs are some of the mechanisms where employers and
workers get together to address their may concerns ranging from day
to day activities to the realization of long term needs, vision,
mission and goals of the organization and its members. While such
mechanisms have proven their effectiveness, there is always the
imperative to seek new and more effective mechanisms to further
enhance the capabilities and realize the potentials of both employers
and workers as the prime driving force of Philippine competitiveness,
decent work and economic development.

We would like to present new practices that may transcend
current mechanisms and usher in new era in Philippine Industrial
Relations. We call this mechanism "Firm Level Social Partnership".

A CALL FOR PAPERS
   FOR THE 2ND ASIA-PACIFIC CONGRESS

   ON THE THEME:

"RREVISIONING GLOBALIZATION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF
COOPERATIVES, TRADE UNIONS AND PEOPLE'S ECONOMIESEbr /> May 17-
18, 2008; UPSOLAIR Auditorium

People's economies all over the world are putting a new
perspective to globalization. This perspective considers the total
development of human beings; relies on the collective strength and
resources of ordinary people to meet their economic, psychological
and social needs; instills a new set of values, discipline and
practices and acts responsibly and consciously to protect and
preserve their environment, history and culture.

This 2nd Asia-Pacific Congress seeks to redefine and rewrite the
script of globalization from the perspective of cooperatives, trade
unions, grassroots economies and initiatives, known collectively as
people's economies or more popularly, solidarity economies. The new
perspective entails a new way of looking at things, one that is
based on shared values and meaning; democratic empowerment and
participation; broad social ownership and economic equity;
ecological sustainability and community well-being; responsible
production and conscientious consumption and the use of capital and
labour to further the goal of social and economic justice.

The call-for-papers challenges leaders and advocates from the
ranks of cooperatives, trade unions and grassroots activists, to
rethink globalization in novel and creative ways and help build the
economic infrastructure of the future.

   Conference Objectives:

To come up with alternative strategies and tools of analysis that
would re-envision development in local areas and in the region by
taking into account its various dimensions: political, social,
economic, cultural, ecological and ethical.

To highlight initiatives on alternative ways of arranging
production and economic activities that are hinged on social
justice, equity, democracy and solidarity.

To chronicle and share best ideas, experiences and practices in
the field of enterprise development; and workplace management,
techniques and processes.

To identify platforms and strategies on how people's economies
could influence the discourse on revisioning globalization.

into coherent relationships of mutual recognition and support.

Hello,

A new paper is now ready to be downloaded.

Tnuva - the Marketing Cooperative: Demutualization or Revival. (2006)

It tells the actual story of the Marketing cooperative Tnuva, and the
development it goes through now. The major components of what we can
learn are:

The story of the selling of Tnuva is interesting and attractive. It
contains very interesting findings:

- First of all, Tnuva is a very large cooperative. It is one of the
largest economic enterprise of Israel, and among the largest
cooperatives in the world. This is another proof that a cooperative
can operate successfully in a capitalistic environment.

- The story of Tnuva shows us once again the importance of the fact
that a cooperative can't exist if the members, at least the majority,
have no more interest in the services it renders, for which they have
created the cooperative.

- Tnuva is a good example that members understand, finally, that the
cooperative belongs to them entirely, practically. And this is in
contrary to the prevailing approach of the ICA.

- The registrar of cooperatives has finally understood, contrary to
his position in the past, that the approach of the ICA concerning the
ownership of the members on their cooperative is wrong, and has
adapted the approach that the cooperative belongs entirely to the
members individually.

- The Tnuva case shows that when there exists a group of members, who
find financial interest alive and clear in their cooperative, they
will do anything in their capacities against the demutualization, and
will be active to make their cooperative living in the framework of
the cooperative, and to look and to find the solution which will
combine their will with will of the members who wish to quit the
cooperative and to get their real value share in the cooperative equity.

Thanks, Michael.  I would tend to agree that, under ordinary circumstances, there has to be a plan for tapering off of, and eliminating, donations supporting a cooperative.  I agree with you that cooperatives should not be limited to the most impoverished.  I agree that we of the middle class are to a large extent complicit in our own subordination.  I agree that even fully functional public schools could not and should not try to do everything.  However, I do tend to believe that when a young person is forced by law to submit to a 6-hrs. per day, 5-days per week, 13-yr. long regimen of passivity and mere order-taking in the public schools, that can't help but have a negative effect on that young person's ability to actively pursue the control of his or her own economic destiny if and when they finally graduate.  I don't deny that despite everything, still, to this day, a young person's family still has by far the greatest actual or at least potential influence on that young person.

Here's to hoping that more middle class people, no less than poorer people, carefully plan for and then ultimately take the leap to economic self-government as sole proprietors or in cooperatives.  Even if only implicit, there is a subservience to being an employee that makes it undesirable status for most of the people most of the time.

Thanks for sharing, Michael.

Hi Ross,

I agree with you in principle, and I'm not saying some people might not need help in setting a business up, but there's no sense coddling them with donations.  They need to learn to run a viable enterprise.  And why does the SoCal co-op movement need to be limited to the most impoverished?  I think helping only a small group of people as charity gives the illusion of change without risking the real thing.

The wealthy try to stay on top as much as they can, but I'm starting to think those of us in the middle classes are undermining our own freedom when we shop at wal-mart or refuse to take responsibility for our own destinies by taking regular jobs and keeping our heads down.  It's easy to blame the rich, but we have them outnumbered.

As for the educational system, isn't it the case that public schools are better at preparing people for typical jobs where people simply take orders and do what they're told by a superior than they do to prepare people to be entrepreneurs who take charge of their own destiny?

The public schools are ailing and out of date, but they've never really offered a complete education.  It's traditionally been the parents who have taught their kids how to be members of the aristocracy or the proletariat.

Hi, Michael, good to hear from you again.  Hope you are enjoying (or at least surviving) the holidays.

If all our lives we had (1) a truly free market and (2) a tax, legal, political, and educational environment at least neutral if not friendly to small start-ups, I might regarding the soliciting of donations for this cooperative as a concession that at least this particular co-operative, and perhaps even cooperatives in general, are not a natural, viable model for economic activity; that co-operative might be a model that needs to be artificially propped up, and that would collapse as soon as the props were removed.  However, neither of the two foregoing conditions is true.  All our lives we have lived in a market that is rigged, not free; we have lived in a tax, legal, political and educational environment biased towards the interests of big corporations (and their owners and managers), rather than being neutral, much less actively in favor of local, economic self-government.  I can't document this claim in a short post or in the time available to me, but I might post an interesting recent excerpt of an interview of Warren Buffet:

"It turned out that Mr. Buffett, with immense income from dividends and capital gains, paid far, far less as a fraction of his income than the secretaries or the clerks or anyone else in his office. Further, in conversation it came up that Mr. Buffett doesn't use any tax planning at all. He just pays as the Internal Revenue Code requires. 'How can this be fair?' he asked of how little he pays relative to his employees. 'How can this be right?'

"Even though I agreed with him, I warned that whenever someone tried to raise the issue, he or she was accused of fomenting class warfare.

"'There's class warfare, all right,' Mr. Buffett said, 'but it's my class, the rich class, that's making war, and we're winning.'

And they have been winning for centuries or even millenia.

As for the educational system, isn't it the case that public schools are better at preparing people for typical jobs where people simply take orders and do what they're told by a superior than they do to prepare people to be entrepreneurs who take charge of their own destiny?

As a result of this unrelenting war against the less well-off classes, realistically, some sort of affirmative action is necessary to put people in the place they would have been if this war had not been conducted.  I would contend that such action is a matter of justice, not charity.  However, perdition will probably freeze over before justice is done by our current system.  Therefore, it is necessary to fund such activities charitably.

This is my take on the whole thing.  What do you think Michael?  What about the rest of you?

Very truly yours,

Ross S. Heckmann

All the same, couldn't Magic Cleaners be considered a 'charity co-op?'  Why else would a business be asking for donations?  The problem I have with this is the whole thing was set up by people who possibly wouldn't join the co-op themselves.  This implies that the cooperative model is only for the 'little people' and no one who can get by in the standard way would bother with it.  That's just what I observe, feel free to disagree.

The

Grand Opening of MAGIC CLEANERS, LLC

December 8, 2006

4:30pm – 8:30pm

Pasadena Community Job Center

(500 N. Lake Ave. Pasadena 91101 – corner of Villa St. and Lake Ave.)

Please join us as we celebrate the Grand Opening of Magic Cleaners—proudly providing Professional Eco-friendly Housecleaning Services to the Greater Pasadena Area.

The history of Magic Cleaners can be traced back to its members' involvement in an IDEPSCA leadership program for Latina women, Mujeres en Movimiento (Women in Movement).  In 2001, this group of leaders created the Pasadena Domestic Worker Association to provide the women of Pasadena with a safe place to seek employment and a space where they could participate in the planning and implementation of community-based events and fundraisers.  Approximately 120 women currently participate in the Pasadena Domestic Worker Association.

Members from the Pasadena Domestic Worker Association later formed Magic Cleaners, LLC in 2002.  Within four years, IDEPSCA was able to assist the group with the development of the cooperative, cultivating it and transforming it from a simple idea of a large diverse group of twenty-plus people to a complex but rewarding process of leadership workshops and extensive business planning sessions for a core group of ten member-owners.  With the financial support of both the Rosenberg Foundation and Liberty Hill, and technical assistance from Women's Action to Gain Economic Security (WAGES), Magic Cleaners and IDEPSCA found allies that have collaborated with us in our efforts to develop a strong foundation as a business entity.

Again, after four years of hard work, commitment, and personal enrichment, IDEPSCA and the Member-Owners of MAGIC CLEANERS LLC are pleased to announce our Grand Opening Celebration!  Food, fun, enlightenment, and community will be provided. But we're counting on you to join us in solidarity on this special day!

Even if you cannot attend the event, please consider extending your solidarity by making a donation to support the development of Magic Cleaners.  A successful cooperative business requires excellent managers, well-trained members and ongoing support.  Please help us reach our goal of self-sustainability and make a donation by sending a check payable to Magic Cleaners, LLC to the address below, or payable to IDEPSCA if you would like to make a tax-deductible donation.

I look forward to seeing you on December 8th. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jason Gutierrez

I have posted a number of help-wanted ads here without getting a response.
I understand why this is for the "Java programmer" ads, because this is a
narrow area. But for the SEO position, I am open to working with people who
don't yet know SEO. I am looking for someone who is smart, independent,
knows HTML and has some technical/internet skills, and is willing to work
hard. There must be some people here who could handle this job.

As the ad says, this job offers little if any salary to begin with. This is
because it is your job to bring up the traffic to a level where the ads can
pay your salary. I believe this shouldn't take long. In contrast, I am
also now hiring a programmer for $4000/month. He gets a salary both because
revenue isn't under his direct control, and because I can judge a programmer
before hiring him much more accurately than I can a SEO/marketing person.

I am open to different possible arrangements. One option would be to only
focus on SEO and do this part-time. If you have a regular job that isn't
very demanding, you could work for Nabble doing SEO in the side. Doing both
SEO and general marketing probably wouldn't be possible on a part-time
basis.

The last business I co-founded was Nextag. This was a classic VC funded
dot-com that made it. It was successful financially, but, like most of
corporate America, it was not a pleasant place to work. I started Nabble
with the goal of creating the kind of business that I would like to work
for. This is why I structured Nabble as a worker-run business. You can
work from anywhere that has a high speed internet connection.

Of course all of this depends on whether Nabble's business makes sense. If
you are interested in this position, contact me and I will send you a
detailed description of our business.
