Tip # 499: Use of gerunds   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #464 of 482 |
Avoid beginning sentences with a gerund, which is a verb form
ending in –ing used as a noun. A gerund is often mistaken for a
verb and therefore results in an incomplete sentence. "Saving my
money" is incorrect, because "saving" serves as a noun in the
sentence, not a verb. A sentence needs a verb to be complete, so
in order to correct sentence fragments which begin with a gerund,
simply add a verb phrase to the end. Correct: "Saving my money is
difficult."

Correct the following. Answers will vary:
1. Working late.
2. Spending the entire budget by July.
3. Speaking to my co-workers.
